Yes those were Aldila's top of the line if memory serves. I think they may have replaced the HM-40. Low torque, stout shafts.

They were not mentioned as you said you wanted to go pro style but, Wilson Staff’s were very common in that time period. That’s what I had. Not particularly collectible but readily available and inexpensive. I poked a few out there last weekend and they have plenty of power.

I agree on the Staffs being popular and they are readily available and not expensive. My high school re creation rig includes Staff Fluid Feels $139.00,

Joe Phillips Persimmons $15.00 each,

8813 putter $29.00.  Most fun I’ve had playing in years!

This where the slippery slope starts for me.  

I knew immediately when I started golfing in 2020 I wanted an old set of clubs.  I thought "birth year" 1982.  There is no 1982 Staff model FG17s were close(1981) as were the '84 Staffs.  Those '84 staffs were a gateway drug to the late 50s early 60s Fluid Feels.   I haven't looked backed!

Gateway drug indeed. They feel and sound so darn good I’m tempted to start hoarding sets!

NRJyzr, we are of similar vintage. Not old, just old enough to have enjoyed Ram at their best and to have witnessed them played by some of the greatest, Watson, Seve etc.

Young Cold_War_Era's year of birth makes him a perfect match for a set of 80-82 Tour Grinds?

So I just checked ironfinder and they don't have this particular set listed.  As a vintage club collector I've gone through, MacGregor, Wilson, and Spalding...now I'm tempted with the idea of the 82 Golden Rams.  Or am I opening another can of worms here?  😂

This is the 80-82 Golden Ram.  They're a little hard to find these days, but sets will occasionally show up.  I passed on two or three sets a few years ago, only to see their numbers dwindle.

 

They're out there, but it's sporadic now.

 

side note:  the Vibration Matched were from 83-86.  The Frequency Matched from 87-92.  The TW276 and TW282 are from 1992.

Not at all.  I have a broken set of Frequency Matched that play quite nicely.  I could be convinced to part with them for shipping.  PM me if interested.

Jack played some Muirfields he did pretty well with in '86 and before.

 

I played Staff Tour Blades from '81 - 91 or so.

 

Jack played better.

Not so much a can of worms, more a jar of honey - pure and sweet! I would urge you to find a set, I am sure they will be to your liking.

I played my original set to death and loved every strike (well most of them anyway!😁). You will see evidence of wear on the soles, the faces are worse!

They may be scarce in the USA but here in the UK they are like rocking horse poo. After many years of single round per year nostalgia outings, I have finally managed to secure another set 3-SW in great condition but sadly missing the 9. I will graft in my old 9 and the 2 iron from my original set and look forward to playing them next season and hopefully rekindling the love!

Only regret, the seller had a 1 iron which he sold separately before I spotted the listing.....D'oh!!!🙄

The HM55 played very stoutly, the HM40 less so.  The stiffest graphite I played back then was the ACT Tour Stik as it had only 1.6 degrees of torgue and felt like a Rifle 7.0.
