Lydia commment

In general I like the fact that Lydia is matter of fact about most things.  Her comments should not be taken any differently than if she had answered “tight Hammie’s” or intestinal distress.  She addressed the discomfort and played on.

Yeah I thought it was cool. She easily could've just said "My back was tightening up a little, happens from time to time" and nobody would have batted an eye. But she was just straight up about it which I thought was cool. I showed the video clip to my wife and she loved it. She didn't know who Lydia Ko was but she's a fan now.

Maybe truthfulness has become so remote and mundane it's actually shocking?

I think the only shock was that Lydia answered when she very easily could have blown it off with an answer of "I was just tight" or something similar. 

 

Menstrual issues are just one of the many assorted bodily functions that traditionally were not considered to be a subject for polite discourse, certainly not to a large audience. 

 

Jerry is old enough and has been around for long enough that he's lived in that era for most of his life.  I know I have.

 

Times change.

 

I do not fault Lydia one bit for answering truthfully, I think her honesty is part of her charm and a reason why she's so well liked (by all reports) on tour.  She absolutely did nothing wrong.

It wasn't considered "shocking" and the only reason it drew attention is because we are in a clickbait world. Jerry wasn't shocked, either, just a little surprised.

 

I saw it live and laughed - grew up with two sisters and raised a couple girls, lol, big deal.

It’s only shocking to those that perceive or portray it as shocking. To everyone else, it’s merely an explanation of what happened that reflects something normal and not shocking at all.

I didn’t get a sense that her statement was considered shocking - although admittedly I haven’t dived deep into social media re the reaction.  Surprise would seem to be the main reaction, followed by 👍.

I've known Lydia since she was a smiling 12 year old in glasses and Foltzy for over 20 years.  That honesty is why everyone that knows her loves her and Jerry wasn't shocked, she just caught him off-guard.

 

I agree it should be a non issue, but some folks like to make everything into one.

 

Kudos to both of them for handling it like the professionals they are.

Who actually found it shocking? Anyone you know personally? I doubt it. This is the media calling it shocking so they can talk about it. That's modern media.

I'm just surprised it doesn't come up more often in women's golf (sports).  Lots of women have real issues with their menstrual cycle that really messes with their life.  Not to mention their golf scores.

Lydia's honesty shows why I don't like speculating on LPGA winners and why semi-cryptically I have mentioned 'physical issues' affecting performance in other posts about picking a winner.

 

Male pros have it easier in this regard.

Honestly, anyone with women in their life should know this is an issue.  My wife was in agony most of her young adult and into her late 40s until it had to be addressed.  This statement wasn't shocking to me, or should be to anyone else.  It's something that just is part of life and can be debilitating to many ladies.  It made me laugh to be honest.

The writer says it's a "Taboo" subject in women's sports. I think this is the case because women's sports receives scant coverage.

 

None of these writers or people that are surprised on Twitter listened to Allison Lee's candid discussion on a podcast that touched on the topic a few years ago.
