The problem with golf commentary, altogether, is that there isn't a personable, witty, and funny personality out there right now. Colt Knost comes close and I could see him.growing into a bigger role. But everyone else is very blah.

I agree, i think the main issue is they stick to the old formula where they get a group of serious folks that will add legitimacy to the broadcast, but that just ensures a boring telecast.  Why its more apparent now is that we have access to more sporting events and we see better broadcasts where the announcers make it fun. Its annoying to keep hearing dumb comments from Jim Nantz where he injects “courage” into the golf vernacular.

Lerner is garden-variety dull but non-offensive.

 

I'd say Ian Baker Finch ("yes that's correct Dottie") and Gary Koch ("Oh-Kay, that'll be just fine!") are worse

I am not a big Lerner fan.  He seems to stumble over his words a lot.  He has a hard time spitting out what he is trying to say.  Not a great quality for a show host.

I absolutely despise the use of the word courage in golf.  Standing at the plate facing a 100mph fastball?  Yeah, that's courage.  Getting behind the wheel of a car that will exceed 200 mph?  That's courage.  There is nothing in golf that requires courage.  

 

As tot he first part of your post, it's why I always enjoyed Doc Emrick on hockey.  The man knew he was covering a game, and a game is meant to be fun.  Listening to Canadian announcers, it's as though you are at church, that the hockey game is a serious matter.  FFS, have some fun with it.  It isn't going to kill you.

He's fine and yes, the flavor of the day "I hate so and so announcer" stuff is tiresome.  Nobody complaining about him could even come close to doing his job or any other broadcaster's job or probably even understands what goes into it.  Lerner is an excellent manager of discussions, at his best during the "Live Froms", IMO.

 

BTW, any comparison to Brent Musburger is a compliment - he was a pro's pro who came up literally through the ranks and honed his skills the old fashioned way, and honed them very well.  In this thread "you are looking live" at a bunch of nothing to see.

Couldn't disagree more.  Musburger is nothing short of a legend which has been earned 1K x's over.   

 

He rode a 2 hour shuttle from S Utah to the Las Vegas Airport a few years back. My driver came back telling me it was the most amazing two hours he'd ever had driving before.  He "entertained" the folks the entire way while coming across as an extremely humble guy.  Wish I would have known he was going to have been on board, I would have drove the shuttle myself.

Not, it's because if someone doesn't like a subject being discussed, they can just ignore the thread rather than "this topic is so tiresome", which gives off the impression their contributions are so important they need to be in every thread, and subjects they don't like take away from all the good work they are doing.

 

If you think Lerner sucks, fine.  If you think he's great, fine.  Make your point either way. But nobody gives a rat's pettutie(sp?) that someone finds a particular subject tiresome.  Become a mod if you want to play forum cop.

Nothing “forum cop” about expressing such an opinion. Now I see it is Jaime Diaz must go - tiresome indeed.

Should start some threads of what posters must go 🙂 Oh yeah we have that option it's called "ignore"... kind of like turning off the TV or changing the channel. Not sure why anyone would spend so much time watching something that annoys them either.

We all have our favorite and least favorite broadcasters and players and so forth. But I can’t think of a time when any of those people actually affected me in a personal way, lol. They just become noise so if I don’t enjoy them, they don’t trigger anything, except maybe a run to the kitchen - win for me! I’m imagining someone glued to the screen while Jaime is talking, getting himself all worked up, meanwhile Jaime is enjoying his time on the air!

What is the purpose of saying a topic is tiresome, then?  Why is it everyone else's problem that someone can't just ignore threads they don't want to participate in?
