Callaway Epic - Top of the head fell off!

Curmudg3on

Recommended Posts

My friend was playing last week and on the 14th hole teed up his drive and the top of the driver head fell off.   The face wasn't dented, the shaft wasn't broken and there is no scuff mark on the piece that flew off.  It looks like the top was epoxied on and the epoxy failed.   Your thoughts?   The pics aren't great but I'm sure he can take additional pictures if needed.   It was purchased at Dicks 2 years ago and they said it was out of warranty.   He's expecting to purchase another driver.

Have him call Callaway customer service himself.  They may help on something like this.

Some of the very early Epic's had some quality issues. I believe the process to make the head was pretty complicated, and involved like 2X more steps than any driver they had made before.

There were a lot of issues with the carbon fiber tearing if i recall, for example

It's been known to happen. By any chance does he store his clubs in his car?

He does.    He has called customer service and was told they were out of warranty.   That's the same thing he heard from Dick's.

I told him I'd post to see if it was common.   Thanks for your response.

Forgive the stupid question, but if it’s separated cleanly with no cracks or damage, can he just epoxy it or superglue it back on?

This. No need to buy a new driver. Just sand off the excess epoxy and glue/epoxy it back together. This isn't a cracked hosel or face. There's nothing wrong with the driver.

A while ago my Epic SZ crown cracked. Callaway replaced it with the original rogue (back when the rogue was at its peak). Callaway has one of the better customer services.

A friend of mine had a similar issue with a Callaway driver that was out of warranty. Callaway replaced it with a newer model.

I know a warranty is only good for so long but Callaway went beyond to help him and he says he has become a Callaway player for life.

I would give Callaway another call.

I agree with this.  I had an Odyssey putter insert fail well outside the warranty period.  Odyssey (Callaway) replaced it with a newer model with no hesitation at all.  Made a big Odyssey fan out of me.

I had the same experience, but couldn’t putt with it, only go $90 on trade in.   That was my 3rd odyssey that failed, so no more for me.
As to the driver, yes call, and if no love then escalate.

As much as a warranty is only for a stated period, that doesn’t mean the item should be expected to last for just that period. UK/Europe has consumer regs to mean that items have to last a fair lifespan, not just a warranty period. Not sure if there’s anything similar over there?

That said, I’d be amazed (and disappointed) if Callaway didn’t sort it out.

As has been said, it is fixable. Just be careful with the glue!

A few days ago, my Cally 17* Super Hybrid failed "completely"...  faced caved, sole cracks, ...   called Cally and "it's out of warranty" they said... but they did offer to sell me a Rogue ST hybrid at a modest discount.  Rather disappointing... figured the club cost me about 1$ per shot or more.   Also, my Platinum status with them didn't carry much weight.

No satisfaction from Callaway.   He did just buy a Mavrik driver, 3W and 5W from Carl's.

Must really be a Cally fanboy then.  I think I’d have move on….

I find it strange they won’t fix or replace this.  These heads cost them peanuts and if it was my company, I much rather have a customer happy and want to go out and spend $600 on a new callaway driver down the road.  I agree with what another person said, no way I’d buy another callaway club any time soon.

Out of warranty is flimsy for this bad of quality.  I can tell you TaylorMade and Ping stand behind their clubs.  My son cracked the face of his SIM over 2 years of playing it and TM replaced it.

Taylormade didn’t stand behind the M3 I bought that cracked across the sole after only 6 months despite it being a well known issue at the time. Thankfully my pro did and replaced it with an m5 at no cost. Funnily enough that also cracked on the part of the sole that covers the weight track.

Looking to change driver this year at some point as I’m struggling with this sim max and due to the above and all the issues people have seen with stealth faces, Taylormade are the only company I won’t be considering.

Ping in the other hand are fantastic. My dad caught a tree root with an g400 iron last year and it snapped the shaft and scratched the head. Pro sent it back to ping and they replaced it free of charge, just postage cost (about £12). Can’t fault them.

You expect them to replace a 2017 driver? Callaway has a 2 year warranty, they will replace within that time frame with no issues.
