Dear Callaway,

RELAX with the screw in back plates already!!! Lol….honestly though, the vast majority of golfers that use a “players iron” almost always prefer a cleaner more minimalist design. The TCB are great irons but the back plate with the visible screws are a bit of an eye sore on a great looking iron. I know Callaway referenced “dialing in swing weight” but we aren't talking about drivers and woods here. If the Callaway designers need a template; reference Titleist T100 series, you r welcome.

Anyone know if this is the replacement for the current X-Forged CB (probably is) or the TCB or both rolled into one?

If the new Apex is similar in shape to the TCB but longer heel to toe with more forgiveness they might be the Goldilocks of irons.

I'm a Ping guy but these look amazing. I always loved the look of the TCB, just need a little more help. Will be interesting to see if they come out with 2-3-4 models that look similar but fit a range of handicaps.

I currently play blueprints and they at times are hard to manage if you're having an off day, but I LOVE the looks of them shaping wise. These new CB's basically look like a beefed up blueprint with a fairly small cavity and a backplate, which I wasn't a fan of before because the backplate was so squared off and edgy and these look much softer in it's squared off lines, if that makes sense. I think it comes off as very very sleek, especially when combined with the darker satin finish. I would love to see what the actual APEX's look like in a bit,  as hinted by Wunder. Could be a nice combo opportunity if the looks blend just right.

100% agree. Unfortunately hardly anyone takes pics from the address angle, which for me is what’s most important. I could care less what it looks like sitting in a bag but that view is the most you see pics of for some reason.

The X-Forged and TCB had a lot in common and probably overlapped more than they should have in terms of target market. They were released several years apart, which could explain some of the reasoning behind the similarities. With the TCB’s popularity on Tour, I’m guessing the X Forged probably gets phased out in this generation. Maybe a lineup that’s looks something like…

 

Apex (two piece forge/welded Flash Face, stronger lofts, lots of tungsten, GI)

Apex Pro (slimmer profile than Apex, techy long irons, traditional scoring irons, PDI)

Apex CB (TCB/X Forged replacement, solid forge construction, more traditional lofts)

Apex MB (self explanatory)
 

The progression would be a similar to their previous releases, but cut out some of the overlap between categories within their own lineup. They can customize any club to suit their Tour staff’s needs, as we saw with the TCB G/SW protos last year. There really isn’t any need to produce two different forged CB lines for the masses, at least not from a management/manufacturing standpoint. 
 

ETA: The X Forged CB is no longer available on the Callaway website (except the UT), which is probably indicative of their intentions.
