Life Coaches or Sports Psychologist?

jda

Recommended Posts

I played with a rando not long ago and he had a woman walking with him.  I thought that it was his wife out for some exercise, but it was his life coach.  She was observing him to offer commentary/advice/coaching later to help with improvement of his game - not a swing or golf coach, a life/mental coach.

One of my other friends is now seeing a sports psychologist after golf cruises, bunches of lessons, new equipment all of the time, etc. did not work.

These are like 8-20 handicappers who play at-most a few times a week, not pros or aspiring pros.

I am pretty mentally tough and my instinct is to dismiss this stuff, but I am also smart enough to know what I do not know.  Has anybody gotten any benefit out of any of this?

Life coach unless they're like 80 probably don't want to take much advice from them just saying.

Sports psychologist definitely can help, doesn't have to be for someone going pro but if it helps them play better and enjoy the game do it.

Is this like an "I'm bringing my psychiatrist on the course with me because why do it on a couch in a stuffy room" or is this literally an attempt to improve at golf?

What’s a life coach?

Someone smart enough to legally steal your money over, and over, and over again.

For someone who is a deep deep plus like +5 or better, elite college player, struggling mini tour player, maybe. This person would also likely require someone with a golf focus or golf experience. A random psychologist or therapist who knows nothing about golf is probably going to be of 0 help.

For an 8-20 handicap who has massive technique flaws in their game, this is laughably nonsensical. Mental stuff is not the problem for that player

Sports phycologist sure for some, at least they have years of studying a degree, many of them doctorates.

Life coach -  maybe you'll find a diamond in the rough but I can go pay $150 an get a certificate saying I'm a life coach.

In fact, if you send me that $150, I'll print the certificate for you!

so - walking with a life coach, that would be way too embarrassing for me - but i'm a total mental case so in that regard i get it - i've given myself the yips, which made golf less fun

recently i've listened to few podcasts with raymond prior and read his new book- i think it's really good even for those that arent really competitive, if you've made golf less fun - giving yourself a really hard time or even given yourself the yips,  i'd def read this book before hiring a life coach....

The life coach that was walking with the guy talked to me more than the client.  I think that he just liked to take a walk with a good looking woman.

We learned mental toughness the old-fashioned way... coach told us that if our head got in the way, then there were plenty of others that he could give a scholarship to.  If I hit the ball an inch from the cup, or into the drink, I feel the same about it... on to the next shot.

Let's just say I think life coaches are what's trendy now.  Anyone can become one as long as study the material, pass a test and get certified.  You're better off with a sports psychologist who's actually gone to school and put in the work for many years.  A legit psychologist has to put in 1000's of hours doing internships as well as the years of school.  My wife is a psychologist and I respect her and listen to her input more than I would any "life coach".

I was at an event at a socal resort where Deepak was with some other snake oil, uh, esteemed experts. They were pitching a golf retreat thingie for some ridiculous price. None of them knew a thing about golf.

I would get some editorial write up out of it from some writers there.

I politely listened to some of the others, then when Deepak started, I lost it. I was in the front row of an outside venue and had to get up and leave. I was overwhelmed with laughter.

I have never heard that much BS before or since. It was like a TV comedy, all these people soaking up nonsense about quantum mechanics and golf. Neither he, nor the audience knew what quantum mechanics was, but it sure sounded impressive if you were 12-years old.

Theres a lot of money in BS. And a lot of money in socal to be had.

I would like your post 1000 times if I could because Deepak is a joke IMO.  Essentially a cult leader.  Let the flaming begin..........

Let that marinate.

Yeah and you don't get paid for it, lol.  Hopefully, they become successful in life and pay the old man back later.  😉

The only life coaching my golf coach gave us was "Y'all boys stay off that c**ter before a match and don't let nobody see you smoking." 😂

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
