Scottie Scheffler testing TaylorMade Spider "TourX SS Proto" mallet putters (no face insert) – 2023 FedEx St. Jude Championship

I could see them going with no ability to change just as much as I could see them innovating the Spider into a milled head with options for players to have. They did a little of this with the GT Max with the movable weights. I could see a few more of these being spotted throughout the playoffs into late fall and then releasing to the public once the season kicks off in Hawaii.

I hope Hawaii is still there next year. Yikes.

I was told they were trying to move weight forward and more interested in making it sort of feel like a blade and not so worried about MOI.

Greg

Maybe the Spider FCG will be the next big thing!

Just extend the shaft.  Not like you can see it under the grip.

I think he means if the head is ever released.

I'd be happy to take his old Cameron putters off his hands so he isn't tempted to go back to them. Feel free to reach out -- I'll even cover the shipping 🙂

I found it interesting when the Golf Channel reporter asked him if it was a risky time to change putters with the playoffs starting.

Playoffs? Not much to gain except cash for Scheffler, who said it’s the perfect time to try a new club because the only event he needs to focus on is the Tour Championship. Until then he has really nothing on the line.

“I could win the next two events and I get a 2-stroke lead in the Tour Championship,” he said, pointing out he still would have to win the last event to win the Fed Ex Cup.

He’s a lock for the final 30 so he has two events to check out this putter. No wonder he and Rory changed now. For them the playoffs aren’t really playoffs until East Lake.

I want to say having the CG more forward also provides a difference in the spin, getting the ball to roll quicker on its intended line.

It really has as much to do with the other dynamic impact conditions as CG. If a player struggles with too much closure or not enough loft, a more forward CG could actually  produce a bounce into and out of the turf rather than a lift and roll.

I doubt that’s a problem for Scottie and it sounds like it was a feel/aesthetic issue for him, but not every player that struggles with getting the ball started rolling on a good line needs a more forward CG.

I think a lot of good players do need that though.  Same with a driver. This weight back stuff makes for a wild dynamic loft add and spin issues .  It may “ forgive “ things. But it creates some of those things it needs to forgive.

some of these putters are the same.  You can hit it off the toe and get same speed off the face.  But you’ll also have more trouble hitting it out of the middle.  So is it good or just good at job security?

I completely agree when it comes to face control and better players. If the club is back weighted, you lose control because you aren’t actually feeling the face, you’re feeling the CG, especially with longer clubs. It may be less “forgiving”, but I’ve found significantly more success with forward weight in my driver.

In theory, the club should improve “bad shots”, but in reality, I feel like I hit more of those “bad shots” because I can’t feel the club head and end up with a sporadic miss.

I’m not sure how much it translates to a putter stroke, because the “swing” is minimal to begin with, but for Tour level players, minimal matters.

I still putt with a Spider Tour regularly, but swap it out for a NP2 depending on the day. I didn’t have any issues finding the center and when I do use it, it’s generally to find a little more stability in my stroke. I think a mallet with some designed arc to it is a great practice club for nearly any traditional, blade putter.

There is a lot of misunderstanding going on her Although I haven't read the 2nd page.

A Mallet is more often swung differently thru the ball for many people, plus there is a big visual component.  Mallets can often initiate a more level stroke and more square impact. The visual aspect can play a big part of this especially with these putters' top lines or stripes. It is not just about MOI !!!

I think this is a brilliant move by TM with this model which is aimed and better players that have a history of playing a more Blade style.

I wonder if TM will release this to the public?

Scottie should’ve kept that Spider in the bag another week.  His putting looks terrible today.

He’s now entered the 3rd level of putting hell.

when you go back to old faithful and putt horribly.  You’re not likely to ever get  back out the rabbit hole without going forward and finding the other side .  Then the question becomes which exit?  Broomstick , armlock , or staying with old faithful for 10 years until you cash out?  Don’t know.   But we will know today how bad it is. If he comes out with the spider.    He’s mental toast.    I can say this because I’ve been there.  It’s bad news.

Been there, done that and got the T-shirt to prove it.

Yeah, the putting yesterday was a bit crazy. I saw that 2-foot putt he missed and had to look away, man.

I've been there, brother. Lucky for me I'm a 4 HC 😂

Has the Cameron today. Whew.  He might be ok.  Not because it’s a Cameron. But because he might have stopped searching. Might have had a lifeline tied to his waist when  he jumped in this rabbit hole !😂
