Ya know, some folks just make it really hard to start a conversation. So next time I'm out playing a round, I'll just stare.

This is odd. I totally understand not wanting to talk about your job for a whole round, but it's a natural conversation starter for adults that are meeting for the first time. If the convo keeps dragging, it's easy to just make dumb joke like "I'm out here to escape my job, not talk about it more!" and move on to the next thing

I get it. I usually bite or maybe just make up something. But my line of work turns grown men into babbling children.  And they will talk about it for the next 3 months at least. I own a restoration/hot rod shop.  Old cars and 40-80 year old men = sidetracked from hell. I purposely do not drive any cars to the course besides my pickup truck.  I don’t advertise, and I don’t mention it , even if car talk comes up organically.  I just ignore it and let whomever babble on about whatever.  TV made it seem like a glamorous job. And it’s not. It’s hot and dirty work.  On par with Ditch  digging and lawn maintenance as far as glamour goes.  And sometimes pays less.

so I get why you’d not want to say.  That conversation is for office guys to have so they can b**** about the cubicle and the boss.

Totally understand that. There's definitely a handful of jobs out there that I'd just lie or downplay so I wouldn't have to talk about.

My comment was definitely from the typical 9-5 cube monkey perspective, as I've found that even if you do answer nobody really wants to talk about it anyways unless you happen to be in a similar line of business.

"what do you do for work?

me: "Trucking insurance, very exciting stuff." usually stops the convo from getting any further than that

Yep. And I don’t mean to be harsh.  But I’m speaking from the competitive golf perspective. I rarely play a round that’s just social with no score.  In fact I don’t recall the last one.  So it’s immediately harder for me to focus , if someone wants to talk cars.  Mainly because I will geek out if it’s the right conversation too. Next thing you know we’re not playing golf we’re trading car pics and hurrying up shots so we can.  Which is just not good.  I play golf to get away from cars.  Deep down I like cars. But over 23 years of doing it makes you hate it. No matter what it is. Too many bad memories because of the human element.  I don’t go to car shows , or belong to any clubs , even though I’m begged yearly to do so.  So I don’t like to mix it with golf.  The old “ don’t crap where you eat “ thing .

I just never got that conversation anyway. I’d think asking someone’s political leanings would be more enjoyable 😂.   Who wants to talk about the thing they do in order to eat ?  Not me.

I’m with you on this. I don’t like to talk about work because it’s inevitably the same questions/answers and basically the same conversation every time.

Yes, working in adult films is fun.

No, it’s not that tiring.
No, I don’t do that. It’s not legal in most states.
No it’s not good for my golf game. My back and quads are always sore from “work”.

Can we talk about something else please? So exhausting.

Good lord, not rude to ask that question. It is borderline rude, or at least strange, to be hyper-sensitive if someone asks.

It’s not a big deal. Someone asks you, you don’t have to go into all kinds of detail. All I say is “I work in finance” which could mean any number (see what I did there? 😏) of about 27 million different things.

True story....I played with a guy once whose wife was an ex-adult film star and now owned a successful business kinda peripheral to that space.

I was like

me: "I've probably seen her"

Those women occupy such a strange space. Many know them but few will admit it. Sort of shadow famous.
