Suggestions for a job title

I love meeting new people on the course and talking about golf and life in general.

However, for personal reasons, I don't like to disclose my job to complete strangers. In fact, I feel that it's kind of rude to simply ask someone's profession without first offering their own personal information. (this is my own opinion)

Anyways, could you help a fellow WRXer avoid awkward conversations on the course by suggesting a fake but believable job title? Any additional details about my 'fake' job would be highly appreciated.

You think it's rude to ask what somebody does for a living?  What about the weather?  Is that okay to try to start a conversation about?

 

On to your question... just say you're an accountant... nobody wants to talk about that.

A friend of mine served in the Royal Marines. He used to reply "I kill people for the government". Tended to change the conversation to other subjects. 

 

If you want silence then mention you work for the IRS.

Not rude, it’s called conversation…and you have it backwards…if someone told you their job first and then asked what you do, think of how awkward that would be? You should try to golf with your friends (unless they’re also kept in the dark) to avoid YOUR awkwardness.

Even if you’re an FBI agent, you could simply say you have a government job that requires you to be discreet.

This is odd. I totally understand not wanting to talk about your job for a whole round, but it's a natural conversation starter for adults that are meeting for the first time. If the convo keeps dragging, it's easy to just make dumb joke like "I'm out here to escape my job, not talk about it more!" and move on to the next thing

I have a friend from high school that went to work for the alphabet soup after Vietnam.  Even he isn't that secretive about his profession.  When asked by strangers his usual reply was "Mid level government bureaucrat.  To my knowledge, no one ever asked for more details.
