Enjoy your youth fellow WRX'ers...  here is my problem

Been a long time prov1x user and looking for more...

as i get older, my swing speed is declining.  that poses a terrible problem...  need distance but with a lower spinning ball and i525's, i can not stop a ball for the life of me!!  so frustrating hitting the front of the green and watching it roll off the back.

So... any suggestions from my fellow aging golfers....  I play good golf (handicap 4) but driver is 230 crushed and 7 iron is 145-152 so I need help... need stopping power from 5 iron down but need distance...

I am NOT brand loyal if it proves beneficial...

thoughts??

I'm 70 and feel your pain. I've gone to hybrids as means to trying to get a better ball flight into the greens with my slow swing speed. 7 iron is the first Iron I carry. its helped some but I'm open to other suggestions. Good luck with your search!

What shafts and golf ball are you using? I’m pretty much same speed as you. I was able to switch to lighter, softer shafts and increase my peak height and decent angle on my irons. (And I’m playing stronger lofted irons) And increase my ball speed and carry with my driver and fwy woods.

For my 2021 P790’s / DG105 S, the balls with the best combination of distance across all clubs without compromising stopping power -

2019 TP5x

Current Chrome Soft X LS

Wilson Staff

Less expensive balls that are also very good-

There’s your problem, 790s are very low spinning irons. Two things I would recommend, first go to graphite shafts and lighter weight. MMT 70, Steelfiber i70, or Axiom 75 would all be great options. All of these would give you additional ball speed, launch, spin, and peak height. At worst, you would carry your clubs the same distance, but with more effective trajectory, or actually pick up distance. Low spin isn’t always the recipe for more distance. Think about spin as wings on a plane. If the wings don’t create enough lift the plane can’t fly. If all the wings do is create lift, the plane just goes up and stalls. The trick is to find a shaft, head, and ball that creates the correct trajectory to maximize carry distance, effective trajectory, correct amount of spin, and better dispersion. What’s interesting, is when you find a product that does the first three, the dispersion usually takes care of itself. I personally have just switched to the Axiom 75 R2 from the MMT70 R and have picked up ballspeed, peak height, decent angle, and spin, but with a much tighter front/back and left/right dispersion pattern.

Nothing wrong with those distances or that ball.  It's more about your mindset, playing to your strengths.  Maybe you're just not striking the ball solidly enough.  You need to address how you impact the ball, especially if your DG 95 Reg shafts are not launching very high.  That shouldn't be the case with "R" flex and 95g.  TM increased spin on P790, so that IMO, is not the problem.  Additionally, perhaps 95g is too much, making 70-80g weight range more feasible.  Again, spinning the ball is a lot about how you impact it, it's not always the shaft tip.

I am over 70yrs, young, still comparatively strong, but gradually losing some strength to the aging process.  Part of the reason I set aside my 620 MBs and bought different T100 irons.   My clubs are listed below and play to around 4, same as you.  My driver is 245++ and 7i is 145+ carry, and my ball for most days is DASH -ProV1x, but in cooler or ugly weather, AVX.

I agree, getting older is also a pain in the @@@.... it's an ongoing battle for all of us ole far*s, that isn't winnable.  All we can do is slow the process.  I do that by hitting the gym 2–3 times a week for strengthening and cardio.  The last two are what got me though the 99' temps this weekend.  Score wasn't the best, 79, but I was pleased given conditions.

PS, often times don't hold due to green substructure.  I know a few courses with cement-like greens forcing me to play short of the green apron, to stop the ball on the green.  That may not be you.

unfortunately i don't see an option for Taylor made and axiom shafts.  The dg95 is high laugh high spin so hoping that will help.  I think the manufacture head matches so not sure i can just take to shop and have axiom put in.  Plus at $100 a club, not to be cheap but this set was $1400... to add another 7-800 is little stretchy for me...

interesting left dash...

i agree but im playing courses that are only 6250 and having to hit 5i and hybrid in many of the par 4's is getting old quick.  Im kinda surprised t100 for you. Interesting...

i often wonder if I am just not delivering enough club head speed to get the ball in the air...maybe more loft would indeed help..

Consider playing from another tee box. That’s kind of the idea behind it, right? I know the stigma that comes with playing „seniors tees“, but if I had to hit a 5i for most 2nd shots on Par 4s, I’d consider moving up a tee box.

Also, I second the suggestion of lighter  graphite shafts and less jacked irons. You need height and spin, P790/i525 and a relatively low launching shaft profile (DG), that’s gonna be hard.
I played DG 120 X100 and was shocked how similar Steelfiber i95 S felt. And I enjoy the higher launch and feeling of actually making use of shaft flex.

Just my 2 cents, hope you find a working setup!!

 I feel ya.

I'll be 62 in a couple of weeks

Started really losing distance about 3 years ago. dramatically about 2 years ago, about the same time I got a Parkinson's diagnosis. ( Affects my left side) So at least I know why, because my swing looked pretty good until last year.

Was a 7, now an 11.

Moved from ProV1 to Callaway ERC Soft and TM Tour Response, like the Cally ball better, especialy the new version with the cover upgrade.

I will turn 54 next month.  Car accident put a plate and 10 screws in my left wrist plus standing all day is not helping my flexibility.

no question, some concentrated lifestyle changes could help too.

still playing to a 4 so I really don’t want to move up tees.  I figure I just need another 20-25 yards and little more stopping power on greens.

I can see not stopping a 5 iron if you hitting line drives into the greens, but how are you not stopping  7-SW?

What is your driver clubhead speed?  About 90 mph?

Those are not "short" distances, those are pretty average for your age.

This most likely a club/fitting issue. Perhaps a swing issue. Zero chance this is a ball related issue.

There is no reason why a 4 hdcp can't stop a ProV1X unless you hitting screaming line drives into greens. I am 60 and play to a 5 and I can stop an AVX with a 4 wood from 180 yds.  It is not like you are playing a Callaway Warbird.

Even hitting  low, well struck shots with 7-PW should check on at least the 2nd bounce.

Your gear is likely way too heavy and way to stiff.  And ditch the 5i and get a 5 hybrid. That is a no brainer.

The OEM irons today, if not properly fitted, and not by the ding bats at the golf stores, are nothing but blunt instruments built for distance and little else.

As Hammergolf said, you got to get much more spin in your whole equipment package.

The only other explanation is a serious swing flaw which seems unlikely given your skill level.

Perhaps try a long shot first and play the Kirkland or Bridgestone BXS ball to see if that helps. Doubtful.

My recommendation is to see if there is an independent Wishon fitter in your area and go have a serious chat.

You don’t have to go with Axiom. Get a MMT 75 Reg flex and install into your 7 iron. They are more reasonable price wise, but still a very good iron shaft. The reduction in weight is going to help your speed and launch. With the metal mesh tip they are as consistent as steel and will swing weight out the same. Not to mention your left wrist will LOVE you for the vibration dampening. No doubt you will see more speed, higher peak height, and increased spin.

Consider playing from another tee box.

I'm 66 and in great physical shape, well except for 2 bad shoulders. But anyway my buddies just convinced me last week that we need to move up to the combo tees.

I have been playing the golds which at my club is one in front of the tips. Depending on which 2 nines we play it will play right at 6770 yards. I can still reach all the Par 4's but on a few of them I have to hit 2 really good shots. Like stated above I would be hitting from 185 - 195 for my 2nd shot.

For reference I hit my 7i 165 yards and my Driver around 250 average.

So anyway the combo tees play right at 6450 yards. I hate that I had to move up but it is what it is. Have to accept reality, hope I get more comfortable with it over the next couple weeks.

I'm 56 with bad knees.  Have recently lost 50 lbs with about 20 lbs to go to goal weight.  This actually screwed up my swing for about 2.5 months.  Finally figuring it out.  That being said I'm in KBS Max 85 S flex shafts in my TM Sim2 Max irons.  My 7i is 150-155 carry depending upon strike and conditions.  Driver is 220-230 carry again depending upon strike and conditions.

I think your distances are about average for your age and physical condition(s).  Don't know if it's the shaft flex or not but like some others are saying a fitting session with an actual fitter would be a good idea to get you swing speed, see how aggressive your transition is, angle of attack, etc....  This will determine whether or not you're playing the right clubs and/or shaft combination for your unique swing.

I’m starting to think a whole bag fitting is needed.  Weird how older one gets, how the importance of dialing in gets.  Would think it’s the other way around.

congrats on losing 50.  Any tips?  I would like to lose 50-75 as well.

I do a Keto based diet of no sugar, bread, rice, potatoes, etc.  Basically protein (eggs, beef, pork, chicken, fish and lamb) and vegetables (spinach, broccoli, fresh string beans, zucchini,  Brussel sprouts)

I also don't eat much during the day partially because I work in an affluent area where a grilled chicken Caesar salad is $20+ and a western omelet is $15.  I AIN'T spending $75-$100 a week for breakfast and lunch.  I'll eat a Quest or Atkins bar for breakfast, salad for lunch, roasted peanuts in the shell, almonds, cheese and dried meats for snacks and a prepared dinner of a protein, vegetable, salad.

About twice a month I'll have a cheat day and eat pasta, bread and a dessert.

I've lost an average 1.5-3 lbs / week

If you have any more questions DM me and I'll give you more details, recipes and tips as well as products that you could use

@spineguy

Left dash is played in typical warm/hot weather here in SOCA and driver + DASH gets me 245++, except that day I was getting 255-267yds

Related critical note: I wrote less distance off as age was again taking it's toll.  But Saturday, watching close up of tour guys hit the ball, I saw a possible adjustment in my backswing.  It meant a tighter full back turn, which allowed my arms at the top and transition to drop tighter to inside out, allowing my SS to increase down and through the ball.  The first time I could actually feel the SS increase was #6, using 2 iron off a 385yd Par 4, in the middle, 160 leave.

Furthermore, recently, I shortened playing length of TSR2 driver to 44.5" and adjusted sleeve to A2, never used that setting before.  Choking down a tad and applying the same swing tweak, I could feel my swing was delivering the clubhead faster, hitting the ball a tad higher and further.  Maybe the really fun part was watching the jaws drop of three friends because all of them are 15-18yrs my younger, and two always been the long ones.  I out drove them both, twice, with the longest being 267+.  Gota take the joy where the ole man can get it... 🙂

Very sorry to hear that.  I had brain stem bleed that affected my coordination from head to toe on my "dominant" right side.  Fortunately I discovered I was cross dominant!

Since the world is built for righties I relearned how to do everything again and a couple years ago I started playing golf as I decided my balance was finally good enough to swing a golf club.

Best of luck on  your recovery.

Well, if the stroke had affected my left side I could have probably kept playing. It first affected my right leg and arm. Fortunately, I regained function in my leg but, my right arm is almost useless which was my dominant side.
