Old hybrids just as good?

Tinkerer

Recommended Posts

I have a friend who still plays the Nike CPR. I've probably bagged 12 hybrids since then. I've finally accepted that a good hybrid is like a good fairway wood....once you find it, hang on to it for dear life.

I've been playing a Cleveland Launcher Halo Hybrid for a couple of years.  I's not a sexy brand. The shaft isn't exotic or custom fit. The ferrule has a gap to the clubhead.  It could really stand a new grip. (OK, that part I should change.)

But I can count on it to be a 200 yard club that I trust off the tee or deck.  I trust it as much as hitting a 9 iron. I occasionally get this idea I need a newer better hybrid and think, what else could I possbly want from a hybrid.  This will be in the bag for awhile.

I love it so much that I bought the perfect headcover for it.

Another nice thing about older hybrids with adaptors is some of the shafts can be had for peanuts.

I’ve got a 16* Adams XTD Ti. I just learned today that it uses the same adapter as some Taylor Made clubs. This opens a lot of doors for trying new combos pretty cheaply. I go D, 2-3-4H, 5-LW. I’m thinking about dropping the 3H since I rarely hit it anyways. And playing with the Adams at 14.5 as a 2nd tee club.

If you find something that works and you have confidence with it, definitely keep it in the bag. My wife has done that with fairways and hybrids because they were automatic. I had the RBZ Stg 2 3w in my bag from when it came out until I replaced it with the Stealth two years ago. And it will be hard to take that out of my bag.

I still think they are improving, this is somewhat dependant on the version.

I've just switched to a TSR3, the sounds it makes is much better than the previous versions. Also with the sliding weight port it is so easy to make those minor adjustments. And it looks fantastic.

I've never had much luck with hybrids unfortunately (left going left!) but of all the brands/models I've tried the Callaway X2 hot pro is as good as anything. Didn't mind the Taylormade fct tp rescue either as it was adjustable to try and counteract the left miss. I'm all on for older hybrids and fairway woods and would echo what many have said in that if it works just keep it in the bag!

I have been back and forth through the years on hybrids - as so many of us have.  I have found the OG Cally Super Hybrids to be long money off the tee so I have a 14* 3 wood and then use those in 17* and 20* - mostly for tee shots, although the 20* works off fairways with decent grass or out of the rough.  For me these head designs don't work great off skinny fairways or hard pan (which we get a fair amount of here in the winter in SC). I flip between a 4 iron and the Paradym 24* hybrid for the 200 yard shot off the fairway - those seem to be designed a little better for turf interaction.

I have Sonartec MD's with OG Diamana Thump and a Bridgestone J33 with a Fuji Speeder 904HB that are still viable today.

As mentioned earlier, these are iron replacements and have worked extremely well for almost 20 years.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

The only hybrid I bag (when I do) is the Mizuno CLK 2018 version. Cut 1/2" short and a bunch of lead tape on the bottom. I use it a lot in the winter months. See no reason to upgrade.

I bought this on  FB yesterday, I actually have the 22° one ( no head cover) but it is quite scratched now and also the 3w in good condition so this will be a match for the 3w  it is 19.5  reason is  I am about to get a new forged set with a 4i  as forged lofts are weaker, so this should add nicely ,  19.5, 21.5 ( 4i)  24.5 (5i)  to PW  and no GW , still don't know if I should go with this strong set up

Funny timing on this one. Just yesterday I was going thru all my old clubs and found a Snakes Eyes 3h that I built at least 25 years ago with Golfsmith parts and decided to hit it just for fun. It’s all steel, even has a steel shaft, and the grip was slick and rock hard. To my surprise that thing was a beast - I couldn’t hit a bad shot if I tried. I should probably put a new grip on it but that thing went right in my bag and if I could buy another in 4h I would. I can’t imagine hitting any new club better.

These are the hybrids I've been gaming since I got back into golf in 2020, after a long 15-year hiatus. The 3 and 4 are Adams Idea hybrids which I got from eBay, and the 5 is an Adams Speedline hybrid which I also got from eBay. Although I'm not exactly sure when they were made I'm guessing they're from the early to mid 2000s. I hit them all great and they'll never come out of my bag. I'm especially fond of my 3 hybrid. It's great off the tee, great out of the rough and I can even chip with it. Just my opinion, but I don't think it's possible to get better hybrids than these.

Gamed my 18.5* 3DX for the first time yesterday. I see what all the hype was about! The weighting makes it feel very forgiving and the ball goes straight as an arrow.Prefer the profile over my mizuno. I even like the stock shaft. Feels more stable then the CK pro blue in my CLK. I've sanded it down and am waiting for thpaint to dry.

I use Ping g30 hybrids and they are just as good as my friends g425 hybrids and have a smaller club head, which I prefer.  I use 4, 5 and 6 hybrids and he has 4, 5 and 7 hybrids. Both of us use stock s flex shafts.

I play 2014 Adams hybrids and I absolutely love them.  I've hit a few newer hybrids and don't see an improvement personally.
