What ball do you play?

In good weather, the TM TP5X or Srixon Z Star.  In the early Spring and later Fall, the TM Soft Select sold by Costco for $35( 2 dozen), a three piece Ionomer covered ball which is surprisingly good.

I start the year with Cally Supersoft, switching to Cally ERC Soft, and then usually switch (but not always) to Chrome Soft come late summer and club championship.

I normally play the pro v1 and have for a couple of years. However yesterday I threw in a Bridgestone B RXS I’d found as that was what their online fitter stated would be best for me and played the best 13 holes of my life (matchplay and started using it on 5th tee). So I may give it a longer term test now before the season starts.

I have been trying different balls the past few years.  I had been on a quest for budget balls.  Vice Pro/Pro+, Maxfli Tour X, Snell MTBX, TP5X, Tour BX and XS, Prov1 and 1x, Almost every Srixon model, Chromesoft and the LS.  Currently have been settled on the Tour BX, although ProV models are king for durability and have great performance.  No huge complaints with the budget balls aside from durability.   If you are losing balls every round, they are a great choice.  Otherwise....I will probably go with the ProV1x.

I try to find quality on a budget. 5A used is what I’ve settled on. I have to deal with some logos and a few player marks from time to time but for $1.50 a ball, I’m in. My index is 4.4, I’m 64, rockin’ Tensei Black 1k X just picked up from another wrxer. I can keep up with the 50 yo’s I play with although they are about 1 club longer in their irons.

They all complain about losing that brand new PV1 on the front 9. I have no such complaints.

I love the pursuit as well.  I tried 5A once and got burnt.  Covers were chipping off fast.  They looked great, but we're essentially refurbished.

I found a retired guy in Mass. who does it as a hobby. I tell him what I want, no refurb, the year, keep the logos to a min, no huge player marks. 80% or better come pristine. Lemme know if you want his contact info.

It’s been the Srixon Diamond for me since about May. It’s a great golf ball and seems to fit my game very well. My ball flight with it is right where I want it. Unlike what I hear a lot I notice no durability issues with it but I also send the ball to the shag bag after each round. That’s any ball though.

Cheers mate, and it is what I thought, the swing needs consistency to make the quest for the right ball really viable, as in the Callaway soft high spinner is better than the Srixon soft high spinner.

You say - for the aspiring not happy with 100 of the stick: Selecta (mid-priced) ball suited to their game.

So what is suited to my game if I hit 100 or more of the stick? Isn’t my game everywhere at that level (i am certainly everywhere on the course, talk about military golf..lol)? Is it perhaps as simple as “i have decent distance so I don’t need a distance ball” as a starting point?

Though right now i am in the “i wish i had the time to have a hit, a chat, and a few beers afterwards” category, once i am back to regular playing i will want to improve. It was when i was staying at 16 hc that a golf buddy kept urging me to choose a golf ball to improve further. That started when he asked what ball we were all playing and i had to pick it off the tee…”this one says bullet and has a picture of a gun on it”…😳

Thanks again.

The choice of golf ball for a higher handicapper is maybe more important than a lower handicapper.

Higher handicappers need to choose forgiving golf balls. Mostly that means higher trajectory with less spin as these are the things that most higher handicappers struggle to control.

From experience balls like the Bridgestone E6 and Srixon Q Star fit the bill. You just need to understand their limitations - while they may be straighter off the tee (don’t slice in the air as much) they also will run out more when chipping and pitching, so you need to play accordingly

Pro V1 for the last 3 years now.  Played it all through high school and college and came back around to it in 2021. Never should have left it.  It's the number one ball in golf for a reason.

Went chasing distance in 2019 and definitely found it with the TP5x at the time. However, played the state am at a very firm and fast venue and had so little control into and around the greens I decided it was time for a change.

Went to the TP5 for a year and had more control into and around the green, but it was so high spinning, soft, and went nowhere.

Came back in 2021 to the Prov1 and was blown away.  Like reuniting with a long lost friend.  Never should have left...

PRO V1X

I'm 62, play over 100 rounds a year now that I'm retired and have an index that ranges between 5.0 & 6.0.  I don't mind spending the money on the only piece of equipment I use on every shot.

I had the opportunity to tour Titleist Ball Plant #3 last year and honestly don't know if i will ever play another manufacturers' ball again.  The quality control and what goes into making a Pro V1 was just flat out amazing.

Mainly Z-star as A) they're hard to beat from a price standpoint when they run their sales and B) it's not easily confused with another playing partner/golfer's ball since not many people play Srixons in general.

I do have some TP5s and Pro V1s in the garage, since I'm "frugal" (read: cheap) I'll usually only use those when I play a course that I'm not likely to lose a ball on.

Interested in trying out the Maxflis once I've depleted my current ball stash in the garage due to all the positive reviews I've seen.

AD333 (Q Star). I got 6 boxes in the last promo they did.

I have some Supersofts for winter here in the UK.

As the Q Star and Q Star Tour are getting an upgrade, the 2021 balls are on sale here, and I was tempted to get some Q Star Tours to try out.

But I've seen sense. My handicap and swing don't yet warrant an upgrade.

Maybe I'll get some more packs of the old AD333 to tide me over the next couple of years.

I think the main thing is to get some consistency with the ball you play when your handicap is as high as mine.

I've yet to break 100.

But I only keep the odd found ball to drive on holes that have a water hazard to clear.

I switched to Taylormade back in 2014 with the Tour Preferred ball.  I switched late last year back to the ProV1 and am gaming those currently.  I will be testing the 2024 TP5/TP5x balls when my test pack comes in.  Let's see how they perform and if they will kick the ProV1s back out of my bag.
