Need suggestions for strong lofted irons, similar to P790s

bob_fish

Recommended Posts

As I have entered my 50s I am looking for more distance, (aren't we all).  I have played the P790s on and off for a couple of years, but not in love with the sole width and  chunky top line.  I have been playing the 770s, as well and like them, but long for the feel of a Mizuno.

I have not tried the new Mizunos, but will at some point.

My question is, what do you all recommend?

thanks

JPX 923 forged is really the most comparable, lofts, and performance.  Askgolfnut did a comparison:

Ive played all of those irons and if u dont mind the address position, ill go with the Gen6 0311XP and ill call it a tie with the 923HM and Gen6 0311P in terms of better at address and slighter shorter in distance.  and a squeak behind is the 245 irons....but I believe the 245 may rank higher if they had different shafts.  Another one to consider is the T350 from Titleist or even the ZX5 from Srixon

The sole looks wide but doesn’t play as wide as it looks because of the V Sole.

T200 would be my choice.

Mizuno 245 would be 2nd choice.

Agree....T200 soles look amazing for this type of iron.  Had OG ZX5 and just could not take the soles on the bottom end of the irons...huge.  I think the MKII are slimmed down a bit or combo set takes care of the problem.  But the T200 look great through the full set.

If you want irons jacked for distance that feel good, Callaway has done lots of good sets over the last several years ... Their "urethane microspheres" produce a soft but powerful feel.  I play the Rogue ST Pro set - they look great, kind of like the P790, almost like "Blades" in the bag, not chunky, not major offset, and the distance is really good for a modern players-distance iron, with the tungsten weighting low to still give it good height and spin.  I personally love the feel of them.  There's also the regular ST and ST Max and ST OS which are greater levels of "chunkiness".

The Paradym and especially Paradym X are strong lofted and are "forged" so you may get even better feel with them.  I haven't tried the newest Paradym AI Smoke irons but I would suspect them to be similar to the Rogue ST family but with more "AI" involvement in the face.

If you want to go older and save some money, they've got similarly beneficial sets going back to Mavrik, Apex, and original Rogue (and Rogue X) families - each having a normal, max and pro version. IMO, all had a lot of merit to them in their particular niche, except the original Rogue Pro which was not good IMO.  I remember Rogue X having crazy distance capability.

More options outside of your Mizuno line of thought:  Ping G700 and G710 were very strong lofted but had some disguise to them.  Cobra King Forged Tec and Wilson Staff D9 Forged might also be worth a mention.  I've heard good things about Taylormade Stealth and Stealth 2 iron sets, but they may be more chunky than you desire ... Even going back to the Taylormade M3 irons - distance but also more players' shape.

I agree with the pro 245 or t200, hit them both very recently and preferred both to my p790 for looks/feel/feedback. If I go back to players distance clubs it will be one of these two.

923 Forged. I gamed both the 923 HMP and Forged. The forged is almost equal to HMP in distance, but feel much better. Also, the HMP had gapping issues. The forged do not. They're forgiving and also do a fantastic job at keeping distances consistent on mishits. They're particularly forgiving on strikes towards the toe, or lower on the face. Minimal offset. Great turf interaction. Give 'em a try.

I have T200 7, 8, 9 and PW.  I also have a T350 7-iron.  If distance is what you want, the T350 would work, and this new model feels really good.  I have previously played T300 and AP1.  I am surprised at the T350.  T200 could also work, but is not quite as long.  I prefer it in the shortest irons.

Having just been fit for new irons the p790, t200, Wilson forged, mizuno 923 forged and the zx5 were all on the list. If you’re a digger like me then highly recommend the zx5. They were awesome, but the new p790 was just that bit better for me.

There really isn't anything else to say...To me and anyone can compare, but the 923 forged look slimmer on top than the new MP245.  They look better at address, and they spin better than the 245.  The 245's are nice for hollow body, but look a bit weird in the mid/long irons to me.  The lofts are the same between the 2 as well.  Not sure why the JPX stuff gets overlooked so much around here.

ZX5/ZX7 combos lend a unique blend of consistency, forgiveness, & distance that is surprisingly compelling. Maybe worth a look.

Mizuno is really hard to beat!  245's and 923 Forged as good as anything on earth

the 2023 version of T200 is lights out too!  Thinner, less offset, no clicky sound.  You can even make the short irons T150's
