Do you listen to music when you are practicing?

Recommended Posts

Do you listen to music when you are practicing or do you find the music to take away some of the feel and the mental aspect of the practice session?

Or get bone conduction headphones S they don't go in ear at all. Aftershocks is an example

Never heard of these, interesting alternative. Would seem to solve my feel issue.

I tend to but someone's destined to start talking to me which admittedly I kind of hate, LOL.

I don't find it hurts the quality of my practice at all. I don't think you need to hear impact to understand that you're hitting ball-first nor do I think that face-contact needs to be audible. All the important factors can be felt through the hands and the ball-flight & divot speak to path and face.

So as far as functionality, music is fine. What I find sometimes troublesome are certain songs that just don't seem to work whether from a tempo or mood perspective. If something is too slow or too fast I find it can throw me off. I have a good rock playlist of everything from Blink to Jinjer to Pearl Jam to Aimee Mann, haha. It all seems to work fine.

I do, but I put the airpods in full transparency mode. I like to turn it down during full swings so I can hear contact.

Earnest Jones would play Waltz music during lessons.  He believed that Waltz timing was perfect for the golf swing.  I have done that a few times but did not notice that it helped me much...

I noticed this after using the tour tempo app for a couple of sessions, my range playlists trended towards waltzes. I listen to a lot of 60s and 70s country and it didn't register until I used the app. Not sure if the waltzes help but the app is pretty great thru headphones.

If you have a problem with your rhythm, then perhaps it’ll help.

If you don’t, I think it would be just another distraction.

But I’m not normal. I don’t tee up balls to a perfect lie and try to hit the same shot time after time. I practice different shots from different lies. Crazy, I know.

i don’t need no stinkin’ shift key

Yes, helps eliminate distractions.  Airpods with transparency on, so I can still hear my shots.

Absolutely helps me focus personally. I for whatever reason have always been one that seems to draw attention at a range and always have someone that wants to talk even when I have earbuds in. Has always been the case for me since I was a teen. I am all for helping someone but it gets annoying when I am working on something in my swing or really focusing on short game. Despite my wife and good freinds always saying I look like an a****** and not approachable LOL! Which I do not argue as I got that leave me alone resting A-hole face.

If practicing at the range, I'd use my Headset, so NO, don't listen to music.  It's imperative to have my full-attention on technique and attention to details.

However, during play I have a small Bose speaker in the cart or on the push cart on low, which is easy to tune out when over the ball.  One doesn't equal the other.

A few studies have shown that music is:

  • raises performance when listened to prior to a performance
  • lowers performance when listened to during a performance

As my practice is my performance that day… I don't listen to music during practice. Occasionally I listen to a podcast… but even then it's more background noise, and signals a little to others that I might not hear them. 🙂

On the first few swings I play "Don't Stop Believin" by Journey, and then after I've seen a few swings play back on my Ipad, I switch over to "Everybody Hurts" by REM.

Changed "Everyone" to "Everybody" after blistering message from REM MegaFan (his name starts with "i" and ends in "acas."

I've tried and find it distracting.  I'm also the same way at the gym.  I can't have ear buds/head phones on while working out.  I'm OCD about being aware of my surroundings which includes sounds.

Sure, sometimes. Used to have a little playlist - always started with Doobie Brothers’ “It Keeps You Running” - just a good song to set the mood. But not all the music was mellow by any means and it really didn’t matter.

Rarely do it now because I listen to music partly to enjoy and it just got to be “noise”. I don’t really care what others are doing on the range so it was never about distractions.

I wear headphones and listen to books or music so people won’t be inclined to give me tips.  They still try and when it’s obvious I can’t hear them, they get my attention visually.  There have been many doozies over the years.  One real good one happened in 2023.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

I don’t listen to music while I play or practice. But if my tempo is off, hearing the Fabulous Thunderbirds’ version of “Wrap It Up” in my head usually gets me right.

In college, though, I used to listen to the Stones’ “Street Fighting Man” before every rugby match. Very effective for front row play! 😎

Do tell!

And just in case you are wearing your headphones …..
