Jeans on the Golf Course - Yay or Nay?

Recommended Posts

I've played on a free (yes, 100% free) course in Pennsylvania where there are no attire rules. There were people playing in proper attire, people playing in jeans, basketball shorts, and even cut off sweat pants shorts and shirts.

Me? i stick to kaki shorts/pants, golf shorts/pants, and polo shirts. I'll wear a t-shirt to the driving range, especially if I am getting off of work or some running around.

I can not believe the nasty things you people say about players who wear jeans. First of all there is a difference between jeans with holes paired with wife beater t shirts. The guys I play with wear nice jeans with very nice golf shirts. I have posted several times on this topic, mostly in jest. I belong to a small private course. I play mostly with a group of seniors. On cold days most of these guys wear jeans. This group includes and has included bankers, attorneys, school adminstrators, business men and retired military men. These men served there country with honor. They are not red necks, trailer park trash or any of the terrible things you people have said about them. Most are involved in serving on boards and doing charitable things. If you do not like jeans I get it, but a lot of people do. By the way they do respect the game of golf.

If you are cold wear cold weather gear under golf slacks, Nike and Under Armour have great choices. Jeans do not belong on a golf course, period.

The course I play doesn't allow jeans. Not even on the driving range or practice area. I hate to see jeans on the golf course.

'when in rome' should be an option.

I play a skins game that is usually at some pulic courses that allow jeans. The game itself isn't seroius and if anything it's more of a beer driking contest. I've worn them a few times and had a blast regardless of what I was wearing. It's part of the charm of this particular game: no rules. (we also play the ball up and don't observe stroke and distance penalties for lost balls etc..)

at a club or a nicer public course? no.

Personally I don't, won't and have never worn jeans to play golf. I won't even wear jeans or athletic shorts/tee shirts to range. Like today after work it's casual friday, so I have jeans and a polo on. But after work I am hitting the range, so I made sure I grabbed a pair of Addidas Khakis shorts before I left the house. It's just not my thing.

But if the course allows it then it's whatever. My father-in law wears jeans whenever the weather calls for long pants. But he shoots about 100-105 and doesn't play anywhere real nice.

I think the relaxed attire rules that many clubs have adopted go along with the attitude in our culture that you can't say anything to anyone, you can't have any rules that appear to be in anyway restrictive. That the man can't tell me what to do, and if he does then he's infringing on my rights and I will sue/protest/make a scene. We are so afraid of "gasp" offending someone that most places just don't say anything. It's like the slow play. No one marshalls anymore because people are afraid to alienate a potential customer.

If i see anyone wearing jeans or god forbid jean shorts i automatically laugh at you and secondly think that you have have probably never golfed before
you mean played golf? I can't take anyone serious when giving advice about the game of golf who uses the "word" golfed. That's like saying I basketballed today. Just bad English, whether you can find it in some modern dictionary or not. I think all of you should spend more time worrying about yourselves and less worrying about everyone else.

In my opinion it's all about where and when you are playing this great game. I am a member at a private club, no jeans on the course, if I play the local muni then who really cares? Personally I can count the times on one hand I have worn jeans on a course, and I have played over 1000 rounds in my life, but I am not too worried if I see others do it, as long as they aren't violating a club rule. The fact that this thread is still alive pretty much shows that the vast majority of the people in this world have their priorities out of whack.....now let's get back to debating on whether men should wear pink golf shirts or not. :)
I went to a charity golf event a couple of years ago. There was a retired NFL tight end playing jeans. I doubt you would have laufged at him.

My dad gave me 4 rules when I was growing up
1. dont get your girlfriend pregnant
2. don't crash the car
3. don't kill anyone
4. don't wear jeans on the course
My dad said, 1.) treat people with respect because you never know when you'll need someone's help, 2.) work hard at whatever job you have, 3.) don't get yourself into a situation away from home where you don't know anyone. He couldn't give two craps about golf or anything golf related. What was the question?
