Bourbon

I went with the Elmer T Lee single barrel - very solid for under $30 - this may well be my go to under $30 bourbon taking that spot from the 12 year Old Weller.

While at the store they had the Four Roses Limited Edition 2013 single barrel - picked it up on a whim - we'll see - it's high proof and high rye so it'll be something with some spice and kick for sure.

The Elmer T Lee is a fine choice... I also enjoy the 12 yr Weller.

I'm working through a bottle of Benchmark Bourbon... it's good for the price (1.75L for 16.99!) but that doesn't mean it's good.

I've got a batch of cherries soaking for future manhattans... went real lazy with recipe. Frozen cherries + orange peel + Benchmark Bourbon.

Once sour cherry season hits (next week?) I'm going to try my hand at authentic maraschino cherries.

I apologize for not reading this thread from the beginning but I hope there is some love in here for the Van Winkles...fantastic stuff although I'm more of a single malt and jameson drinker

Plenty of Pappy love... it's just a pain to find. I've moved on to new challenges.

I'm holding out for the Antique Collection release this fall. Thomas Handy, George T. Stagg maybe some 17 year old Eagle Rare.

I have stumbled upon three bottles of Jonnie Walker Red Label in St. Marrten for 12 bucks a bottle. I bought them all. I dont think it tastes bad at all, but then again I cant distinguish many apart

Great deal on JW Red, although it's a Scotch and not a bourbon (there's a Scotch thread in this forum as well), it's good stuff for the price (especially at 1/2 price like you paid), the Black is noticeably better for a few bucks more.

I'm in a bourbon rut... I'm trying to dirnk less and spend less... been sticking to Old Forester for the most part.

I'm hoping to find some sour cherries soon and make my own maraschinos for Manhattans.

Mmmm... Bourbon! I must say, I do love a glass of good bourbon. Being from Iowa I don't have access to most of the brands you guys are talking about, but I have been fortunate enough to try Four Roses and liked it very much. I'd have to say my favorites are Woodford Reserve Double Oaked and Cedar Ridge. The latter being a local company that makes some really good stuff. If you like Makers or Knob Creek, I suggest trying to find a bottle of Cedar Ridge. Same price range, too so that's even better!

Just finished my bottle of bourbon and looking for a new bottle. Thinking between $30-$40 range. Woodford? Four Roses Single Barrel? Any ideas or thoughts.

Bourbons definitely different for everybody, but I've bought a bottle of both the above to try recently, even thought the FRSB was very good, and gets more praise here than the WR, I liked the WR better. I'm going to keep trying different ones throughout the year, but I could see WR being my go-to bourbon, has a great taste, smooth, not a whole lot of different flavors going on, which I like, plus, it comes in 1.75 liters (as us rednecks call it, 1/2 gallons) which is what I like to buy and makes it an even better value. Both are great bourbons, try them both, I'd be interested in your opinion as somebody who's trying them for the first time.

Like the post above said, bourbon is personal. Myself I'm a big FRSB fan and would definitely recommend it over the Woodford. A little bit more complex and flavorful for me. I would also look at eagle rare or Elmer t lee single barrel - I would put those in the WR category.

The best part is trying new ones and finding out what you like the best

Thanks for the info guys. I've had Woodford before but only a sample. I have had the FR small batch and have heard the single barrel is quite a bit better so that intrigues me. Never had the Eagle Rare or Elmer T Lee SB. I'm hoping to pick something up this weekend.

It's Sunday morning, what could be a better time to start drinking bourbon, lol. Elmer T is one I havn't tried, heard it's pretty good though. I went over a buddies house yesterday eve after golf and sipped on a fifth of JD black, still isn't anything wrong with JD Black, hadn't had it in a while since I've been trying all these different bourbons.

I've been enjoying Rittenhouse rye lately. Great taste and a great price-$22 in Michigan. It is 100 proof but has alot of flavor. I am also a fan of buffalo. Elijah Craig 12 year is another smooth drink, 94 proof and under $30.

Jack Daniels Single Barrel, best thing to come out of a dry county
[/quote]

easily my favorite aswell. In the past year i've tried

-Woodford reserve
-Elijah Craig
-Buffalo Trace
-Markers Mark
-Makers 46
-Old Forester
-Knob Creek single barrel
-Blantons
-JDSB
-1792 Ridgemont reserve

Jack's is my favorite easily. Smooth but powerful. For high alcohol content it's still very drinkable and has a lot of flavor. I found drinking say, Knob Creek single, to be a little harsh some days

Let's see...

Ancient Ancient Age 10... a great cheap bourbon.

Hirsch... probably the most disappointing bottle I've bought in awhile. It's fine, nothing great.

Made my own maraschino cherries (tart cherries + luxardo) they are awesome. Make great manhattans.
