Does anyone still game Ping Eye 2's?

Hit em good

Recommended Posts

I'm still playing the i3 blades. Great iron. I'm looking at the S55's but a few years ago I was looking at the S54's. I just can't find a reason to get rid of them. Just 2 years ago I got my 1st graphite shaft and retired my old 43" Dynamic Gold X100 Titleist 975D. Same Ping Anser2 putter for the last 20 years too...

I re-did a set for my brother a couple years ago. Refinished the heads, did a red/white/blue paintfill. Put some Apollo CWS Tapered Stiff shafts in them, topped them off with some Golf Pride Patriot grips. Gave them to my brother when he got out of the Army.

Played with them back in August when I went to visit my family in MI, shot -5 over two days with the 1-SW set up and my Redwood Anser. I personally would have zero issue playing Eye2 irons.

Kinda hope PING releases an updated set with the same shape. I'd own a them in a heartbeat.

It's really amazing how far the metallurgy has come in the last 30 years or so. Way back then I tried a set of the BeCu Eye2s, and to use a well worn term on this site, they were "butter". MUCH softer feeling than all the other cast clubs of the day. Fast forward to today, my i20s feel like forged clubs and the BeCu set that I finally treated myself to feels harsh by comparison. Don't get me wrong...they still play great, and I can shoot just as good of a score with them, but the feel is definitely a bit antiquated.

I shot my lowest score (73) with the eye 2s a couple of weeks ago. Picked up the set of 3-9 at goodwill and added a 2 iron and W. They are great clubs and I had to adjust to the weaker lofts but awesome club. I sold my G25s because they weren't any better.

Hi, I play Ping Eye2+'s. Got them my Freshmen year of college ('90) and really haven't played anything but. I experimented with Callaway and TM a bit in mid 2000's but never really found anything I liked as much. Creature of habit I guess? I recently went to a Ping fitter locally and had them put the KBS Tour V series shafts in them (previously KT's) and what a difference they make. Ball flight is a bit lower, distance gain is 1/2 a club and solid feel. About $19 a shaft for a set of 25 year old clubs was way cheaper than a new set, plus I didn't have to change anything. The heads have held up really well throughout the years, mainly due to keeping my clubs indoors (A/C) and taking care of them. My local club has a few of us who play them still and we are all single digit handicaps and some poke fun at us for using older tech, but when one of us takes their money in quota games, they whine that we are using illegal clubs. Haha, read the rules. Anyway, nice forum and thanks for letting me post.

What did you think of the Apollo CWS shaft? Not much info on this shaft so I was curious if you'd mind sharing your thoughts? Similar to any other shafts?

The reason your i20's feel better than the Eye2's has nothing to do with the metallurgy. It's the club head design; where the metal is placed plus the addition of the damped tuning port insert. Ping has learned a lot about how to design cast heads that feel good, yet retain the advantages of casting.

I'd love to share my experience with them. I ordered them and played them in Stiff since they were for my brother, normally I play X. When I played them in August I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't have to baby them to keep the flight where I wanted. The feel was very smooth, somewhere between Project X and KBS. Really really happy with the feel, not loose when I stepped on it and could work the ball in all directions and trajectories.

At the time my gamer irons were Nike VR TW blades w/ KBS Tour S+ and there was only a small range session to get used to the CWS. For an $11 shaft, I would definitely use them again for a refurbish/fun project. They played fairly true to flex in my opinion, great shaft for the money.

If the Eye 2's had the rubber insert the i20's have the would fell just as good. The i20s just have better sound dampening than the older Eye 2s

Thanks for the review, really good insight. How would you say they launch? More mid launch like a kbs?

They were mid-high launch. Didn't spin off the planet, no issues with ballooning at all. Might have been the fact that the Eye2 have weaker (traditional) lofts. Either way they were easy to work.

I have a set of Eye2 +no+ that I'm sending to Ping to tumble and refinish. I really like my I20's but like the looks of the Eye2 better. The only concernable difference between them is the bounce on the I20 is much better and doesn't dig like the Eye2's. Playing and score wise, I don't see much difference between the sets. With the right shaft, the Eye2's really come alive.

Visiting my parents in a week, which will mean access to my old stainless Eye2+ and a spare set of BeCu Eye2. Can't wait to get out for a round or two with them.

Also, I picked one of these up recently, but unfortunately will not be able to take it with me to use with the OG Eye2s.

Dusted down my old Ping Eye 2's at the weekend and noticed the LW is actually an eye 2 plus.. That means the all the years I was playing 2-LB, the gap between my SW and LW was 0.5 degrees.
Also for anyone that says that the eye 2's are aesthetically pleasing, I would urge you to look again at the shape of of the head the short irons - I would say that they are utterly hideous.

As with everything, it's personal preference.

Yes, they might look ugly relative to some more traditional designs, but if one is an Eye2 fan to begin with, I think it requires a different type of appreciation. In my opinion, it's the hosel and offset that make the short irons look like that, the head shape itself look good. Then again, that's just me.

I played my Eye2+ a couple rounds before the weather killed my season. I was reminded both what I liked about them, and what I didn't.

Ultimately, they're excellent irons that still play well against the modern competition, aside from the obsession with distance that would cost them support in the modern marketplace. (because they don't have a 40° 9 iron, if not stronger)

That said, they're largely not for the high trajectory player. The short irons, and especially the wedges, can be a problem for someone who naturally hits the ball high.

Re: appearance, I was able to get past the clubhead size, coming from tiny little Golden Rams and Muirfields. Seems to me it's merely a matter of acclimatizing one's self to the appearance. Once you become accustomed, it's no big deal.

I agree, until you see that ball fly high and drop next to the flag.

It's a love/hate thing. But if I had to shoot a low score to save my life,
I'd grab the Eye 2s!

Thats a hard statement to disagree with, once you get the aim/alignment dialed in they really go to work.
