Taylormade V-Steel: Band of Brothers

I've had a v steel 18* and an r7 tp 15* (both have v2 75 shafts) in the bag since high school. The r7 tp is hot from the deck, and the v steel is a do-it-all club from any lie. I don't imagine finding a 3 wood that is longer while still being accurate, and lets face it, the v steel 5 wood is the greatest fw wood ever made. I did buy some new head covers to minimize the funny looks, though.

Probably my biggest regret to date as far as selling golf clubs was selling a minty 13* TS with a grafalloy blue X flex. Will never forget hitting a par 5 in two from 290 in front of a small crowd at Enjoy.

That said my 13* tee cb5 with a prototype matrix fitted in there might actually be hotter. Regularly hit it in the neighborhood of 300 and sometimes beyond. Thinking about picking up a 16.5 to compliment, just no idea how to get a similar shaft.

I have a TS, 15, 16.5, and 21 that are going to get the matte black treatment to help get me through the Montana winter.

Here is mine that I did a ghost finish on and it has a x stiff ust Irod fairway shaft. Great club! I kind of switch between this one and a 08 Burner. The burner launches a little higher and is a little better for me off the tee although I hit it a little shorter than the v-steel. Love both of them really!

Everyone, I have both a 15 (3) and an 18 (5) and there are distinct differences in this two clubs that have me wondering if one or the other is a fake.

I was told by a store guy at GG once that there may be as much as 50 percent of counterfeits on the market; Well, my 3 and 5 are different in several ways.

The serial numbers are blatantly different. The "Steel" inscribed on the clubs is different from the 3 to the 5. Also the numbers on them and then their shape and size is different.

Any thoughts on one of them being a fake? I think it might be the 3, because the serial numbers look like the old serial numbers on the first ever gold Burners that came out many years ago.

Thoughts?

Look at the "Steel" on both bottoms. Notice how the 5 wood is thicker:

Now if you can make it out, the serials are entirely different and the 3 seems like it might indicate it's dubious:

The real V-Steel 5 wood is indeed a smaller size. That's actually one of the things that I really like about that series. I prefer the more lofted woods to be smaller than the 3 woods or spoons

I checked mine. The serials look like yours. Mine are different serials. the 3 has much deeper serial stampings. the 5 has etchings.

I agree that something looks off about the "STEEL" lettering, but I can't tell you what it is. Even the stampings look similar to mine... Sorry I can't help on the stamping.

I don't know when the market started getting flooded with fakes, but I would suspect it is around the time these hit the market. These came out in 2001 with an MSRP of, wait for it...$300.00!!!

Prolaunch red is going to give you a lower ball flight. The blue would much better suit what you are trying to get to.

I have a 3 and 5 tour issue, and the stamping on the 5 is a little deeper on that one. I also took at my father's retail 3 and 5 heads and found the same thing. The serials were done both ways so that is no worry at all. And in my opinion you have nothing to worry about. The font and placement looks true on both of your clubs so I feel they are both legit . I also looked at the stamping on my 7 and TS and they have that same slighter deeper stamping look to them. So I'm guessing this is simply how they were stamped. Hope this helped.

I guess it depends what your intending to use the club for. If this something your going to use off the tee more often then not I would say throw a red in there and see if that does the trick. If your going to be playing it a lot off the deck, I would think the blue would help with getting the ball up on that lower lofted head. Both shafts can be found for a bargain so if possible test with both?? Hope this helps!

Even though I am using regular flex, UST Gold 65 are going in these. When I had these before, I had the Harmon Tour Design shafts from UST in them, biggest regret I ever made was getting rid of them.

Has anyone measured the face angles on these? Are they square or open? by how many degrees? Thanks.
They usually measure within a half degree of square, in a spec guage. Keep in mind that just because a head measures "square" in the guage, does not mean that it will setup and look square for every player. For example, many players need 'measured' open face angles in order to get a square look to their setup and eye

Count me in. I have the TM V-Steel 4w and 7w w/ the stock graphite R shafts. Very nice! I am going to throw in some steel shafts soon.

EDIT: Now going the safe/forgiving route and hitting the V steel 5 wood. Thinking about shafts-- either steel or graphite. Hmmm...
