NOW THIS !!! IS HOW A CLEVELAND CLASSIC SHOULD LOOK

ROBOPTI

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I took my Classic 290 9* with DG S300 tipped 1.5" cut to just under 44" and played with it in a tournament yesterday. All day long I just KILLED IT on all 14 driving holes!!! I NEVER hit all my fairways, it was just unreal. It seems like it is so heavy it makes my bad misses go away. It also didn't seem like I really lost much distance? I'm keeping it in the bag for now!

I reshafted my Wishon 919thi with a Dynamic Gold as well, and it's even better now. So accurate, and I noticed no loss of distance. My tempo is much better with it, and I can feel where the clubhead is throughout the entire swing. On the one hole I played yesterday that I actually measured my drive with GPS, it went 316 on a flat fairway with no wind helping. It's staying in the bag as is.

Great thread and very interesting to read, I to am now going to experiment with steel in a driver. For the last couple of months I have been hitting my old Taylor 510tp 10*5 with a Grafalloy Prolaunch Red stiff I threw this together out of boredom and it has blown my Ping G15 with Oban right out of the bag. I have hit some of my longest drives ever with this combo and what a solid head the old 510tp is. Fortunately for me I just happen to have a new untouched s300 shaft and an extra 510tp 10*5 head, I'm looking for advice on tip trimming this shaft and a final playing length for this combo. Is the general thinking to go slightly shorter with the steel or the same as your graphite shafted driver?? Thanks for your input,

If you feel like the S300 might be a little soft tip it an inch/inch and a half. I would not play it overall length any longer than 44".

The standard tip trim for an S300 is 1 1/4" for a standard bore driver head. So if you're going to hardstep, trim more than that. I'm going to guess that the r510 tp head weighs around 200 grams, so a finished length of 44" should get you right around D2 or so. Trust me, it's worth the time to try this. It's SO fun and it rocks hitting steel in the driver again. Makes me wonder why I ever switched to graphite.

Has anyone played an R11 with a steel shaft?
I do believe there was another forum member who is doing this. Ir I remember correctly, he loves the combo of X100 and the R11 (possibly R11s). I have an R9 Superdeep TP and an extra R11s sleeve laying around, so I might give that a go myself.

Cool. I figured why by another driver head when I can just swap out shafts.

Really? True Tempers web site says tipping for a steel driver shaft is zero inches.

Any feedback? How is it working for you?

So far so good. Love the weight. Stuck 10 and 14 gram weights in the ports. Paying it at about 43 3/4". Best feeling club I have ever hit. One thing I noticed is that I can make an easy swing with my driver and play a 3/4 shot. Much easier to hit a 70% driver than a fairway wood. Much more versatile now.

Zero tip trim is for a bore-thru head. Standard bore tip trim for a DG in a driver is 1 1/4". Trust me. I've been building clubs for a long time.

An X100 (which you need if you swing that hard) is rated for swing speeds from 105-120 mph with the standard trimming. You could trim an extra half-inch to one full inch, depending on how much stiffer you want the shaft to play. It also depends on your tempo and how much you load the shaft in your backswing to downswing transition. If you're a smooth swinger, I'd just do a standard tip trim and not trim any extra. If you have an aggressive swing, try an extra half-inch or so. But don't overdo it...a little extra trimming goes a long way.

A few years ago I had a lesson with Shawn Clement and he was killing an old 580xd tp with a X100 in it, he loved steel

I had great success with 95 gram speeders in drivers for years and have slowly been getting my driver length back down to 44.5"

But the best I ever drove it was with a Bridgestone Whopper, locked and loaded with the old smooth steel Rifle Precision 6.5".

I am going to dig that shaft out of the Whopper ASAP and put it in a Adams LD 9016D 10.5* head I have laying around gathering dust ..

that my friends will be a BEAST :busted_cop: and will likely get me back into lazer mode

So the tip trim should be whatever the bottom bore to ground measurement is? I have a Rapture V2 and from what I remember it's about an inch

For any standard-bore driver head (hosel bore about 1 1/4" deep or so) the tip trim for any Dynamic Gold wood shaft is 1 1/4". And it's just a coincidence that those numbers match up. Different shafts have different tip trimming instructions. The distance from the bottom of the bore to the ground is irrelevant. We're only concerned with the bore depth. A blind-bore clubhead (hosel bore 1 3/4"-2"deep) requires only a 3/4" tip trim on a DG, and a bore-thru head (shaft goes all the way through head and is finished flush with the sole, i.e. older Callaway and Titleist clubs) requires no tip trim. That being said, most clubheads have a standard bore, and thus require standard shaft tip trimming.

And let's make sure we are clear on some undeniable data- anytime you miss a fairway, it's because of your "super-techno-carbon-woven-tri weave this-nano tube-litium infused-bionic bend point that-gi joe with the kung fu grip" shaft, and every time you hit a fairway, it's because of your headcover!

Hope all is well!

So which one wins out, the 7.5* steel shaft or the 11.5* graphite shaft from the other thread?
This one / steel shafted

This driver doesn't give up much distance if any at all ... and is actually straighter (for me) .. I can use lower loft and still just swing for the fences .. The shaft does the rest ;)

Ummmm ....

Here's the ones I have built so far ... Another one is drying to run in an AMP ... but the S3 shaft fits it & ZLE

Steel shafted

S3 / L4 (which is AMAZING) / Classic

Played Lost Key in Perdido Fri & Sat ... Tore it up ... Barely left the fairway ... I'm sold

Found out my AMP 3 wood / TX95X YSQ+ is a CANNON there too
