"That" guy on the range

To me, there is a definite difference between the $10 cotton logo polos and the $50 golf shirts that fit right.

Just like there's a difference between the $100 suit and pants and the $500 tailored suit and pants.

There's $100 suits?

I kid! I kid!

Like the OP, I think the situation was funny and glad he shared the story. That being said, no need to say that you can't wear a certain style of clothing because you don't have the preconceived skill level associated with said clothing. Some people assume if you wear brightly colored clothing to the golf course it's because you're posing that you're a good golfer. I for one assume you're an average golfer until your score says otherwise regardless of what you wear. One suggestion, we start requiring slow golfers to wear patches with the letter 's' in bright orange on their shirts so we know who to tee off ahead of. You're :welcomeani:?

we should just tattoo a big s on their face, that way everywhere they go people will know they are slow. It would also help picking a line at the supermarket be easier as well.

I honestly don't care what someone else where's on the course. Hell I've seen guys play in wifebeaters and chugging natty lights at my local 9 hole course.
Do you mail in the barcodes from the Natty Light boxes to get the wife-beater or is it the other way around?

Could not help but chuckle on the range this morning.

I was hitting balls when along came a guy (probably around 35), dressed in a luminous green shirt and pink/luminous green flower pattern long pants (which I can only assume were Loud Mouth pants). White belt, white shoes, white cap, white RBZ driver, white RBZ FW.

He proceeded to "loosen up" by hitting 1 handed wedges. He hit 5 shots with his left hand, and shanked every one of them. He then hit 5 shots with his right hand, and fatted every one of them.

Then he got to the full swing. He didn't have a bad swing. He looked like he was a capable golfer. He did lay the sod over a couple of irons, and a couple of FW wood shots though.

The whole time I kept on thinking of how much he reminded me of "that" guy in the Wilson commercials.

I wonder why people draw attention to themselves in that manner, especially when they proceed to shank and fat shots.
Not possible that he just left the course and was just hitting balls? I actually do this. I have a favorite range that's on my way home from my course. It's covered, has A/C, etc. I often stop and hit balls after a round. So when I stop by I look like "that guy". But I'm not one of those who really cares what other golfer think. If they don't like it, they can suck on my staff bag.

I find it crazy, that a 35 year old man, is dressing like that. What is wrong with people today. Grow up and quit dressing like Ricky Fowler.

Its OK for the young kids, but not adults.
I dont see anything wrong dressing like that. I am 35 and I rock he orange Puma pants and matching Puma hat. The next thing I know someone is going to call out people for wearing a 51MM watch that i might add is also orange/white/black. There is nothing wrong with me at all and the HC is under 10. Haters going to hate, players going to play.

I think that most intelligent people avoid dressing in loud colors because grabbing attention is generally not what they want to do. True intelligence can sometimes lead to wisdom. Wisdom leads to humility and respect. Humility and respect lead to smaller desire to broadcast one's own view.

The strongest opinions are usually wrong. They are usually completely 1-sided and and built defensively instead of objectively.

So people who claim just to be 'expressing their personalities' through loud clothing are still (by wearing it) saying 'look at me, notice me, care what I'm about.' When I dress in clothes that are more conservative it's in an attempt to blend in because I don't have any need for the guy on the other side of the range to know what I'm about. I respect him and by not asking for his attention, I respect his values. If I were to wear something that broadcasted my views and values on the world I would be grabbing the world's attention for no other reason than to let everyone know my opinion.

Talk about arrogant, huh?!

Do you all sort of see why conservative clothing is more prevalent?

It's less presumptuous.

If you understand what I'm saying, then you also understand how the argument of people who ask 'why do you care what someone else is wearing' is invalid. When someone says that they wear loud clothes because they don't care, they are complete hypocrites.

Loudmouth is a company that has a mission statement and a goal. The people who think it's because they don't care are ignorant. Of course they care! They see conservative fashion and purposefully go in the other direction. I can respect someone who says they wear Loudmouth because it sends a message. They understand the companies mission and buy into it. I can respect that. I don't respect someone who says that they aren't sending a message and that they don't care because they obviously do by asking for my attention.

Even if they don't realize it, they are buying those clothes based on a value-judgement and wearing them as a way to send a message. If you don't care what I think, then why are you asking for my attention? Those actions are contradictory.

You see how sending a message that says 'I don't care' is hypocritical?

I hope you do.

This is not a condemnation of loud clothing and I'm certainly not saying that intelligent people--or wise people--can't wear loud clothing. They can and they should if they feel so inclined. I'm just saying that you should know that you're sending a message where not everyone wants to hear one.

Not everyone goes to a range to hear someone's views on the world. Especially when you can't help but notice because they make themselves so clearly visible.

This is something we see in all of the world. Inevitably, we all have personal and political beliefs that we have both keep quiet but also declare and protect. It's about balance, so I respect someone who wears the clothes but I hope they understand the message they are standing behind and helping to support.

I think most of them do understand that. Good for them.

It's ironic and therefore contains comedic value.

The irony - That this guy goes out of his way to deck himself out in the duds of a pro BUT evidently plays badly.

That is ironic and therefore it's comedic. Laugh...go ahead, laugh at it. Don't be scared. It's supposed to be funny. Ironic situations are comical by their nature. We laugh at them all the time. No one's judging character in this guy's case, just his contradictory actions--one meant to promote the idea 'this guy must have game' and the other not supporting that at all. It's ironic and the OP is pointing that out as a way of providing levity.

No one's getting hung up on judging anyone's character. I'm really surprised that people cannot tell a difference. I'm not going to condemn people who can't distinguish because they usually have their own baggage. I knew a close friend like that. He was overtly passive, yet highly judgmental himself. He'd be the first to remind those around him not to judge anyone else. 'Don't you dare judge that crack-head over there, it's a free country.'

That guy had issues though. Family issues, parent issues, drug issues, work issues, you name it. He had no self confidence and therefore was completely passive aggressive. I now choose not to hang around that guy very often. Because he can't feel good about himself, he has no ability to be comical or light in normally amusing situations. Too often, he feels he's a Nazi if he isn't extraordinarily liberal--like there's no middle ground. Plus, he's a drag who takes everything really personally which I've found is just no way to get through life.

So guys, if you have a problem with a little comical irony, maybe look inside and ask yourself why you feel so compelled to rid yourself (and others) of the natural desire to chuckle at that rather silly character portrayed by the OP.

And to remind you all of what I've previously stated in this thread, I have no care about what an individual wishes to wear. I wish I could wear loud colors because I'm a decent player but I feel I look stupid in them. My skin tone, hair color...everything, they just don't look good on me. Rickie Fowler, I think he looks great. You have a nice tan, dark hair...maybe do some lifting? Yeah, go at it, that fashion probably looks great on you. Overweight? Pale? Other rather unattractive qualities? Stick with the more traditional looks. You'll look stupid even if you drain that 10' putt on 18 for a 66.

Remember, fashion isn't just about buying what you want it's about buying the clothes that make you look good be them traditional or something else. Webb Simpson looks great. Rickie Fowler looks great. I would err on Webb's side based on what I think makes me look good. To me, that makes more fashion sense that somebody who has a bold personality using that as a reason to wear bright orange when it's clearly NOT his color.

By the way...Ben Hogan felt the same way. He dressed conservatively as a way of boosting his confidence. Many people--myself included--are that way. We start to feel stupid if we wear loud colors. That's me though and to each his own.

You guys are a riot, this thread alone is making me wear my loudmouth pants more than ever. There is no way you can focus on your golf game when your judging somebody by his pants and if his handicap allows for him to wear such things. Not to mention trying to analyze me and come up with what type of message im trying to send to others.

I am also a LM golf user (see profile pic). I am a decent player (hcp 9ish). I have to say that this thread does make me wonder why I am wearing these outfits. I guess it's because I have an extrovert personality. Even if I wear my regular clothing I still will be the loudest person on the course (which is not always a blessing ;))
So I guess in my case the outfit fits the person. I wouldn't go so far as to say anything about intelligence based on what a person is wearing (but maybe that's because I'm not smart enough :))

I wore bright orange Nike drifit pants. I'm pretty sure the group behind me was making fun of my pants because I heard a few comments. If you're going to make fun of me for my pants, make fun of me to my face instead of making facetious comments. It's not my problem I can wear nice form fitting pants because I'm FIT...

You know....some people just want to have fun. The loud apparel (and come on, let's face it, if you were wearing khaki knickers and knee high socks, we'd still be having these threads/comments) sometimes is an expression of having fun.
So: not only do we have to worry about the cost of the game, we now also have to spend on clothing since there seems to be a minimum spend so as not to invite ridicule (oh look, there's that best buy guy).
Can the fashionistas please compile what is appropriate clothing for 30-20 handicappers, 20-10 handicappers and single digit handicappers?
Just so I know what to wear as I try to improve my game.
Also, if you can tell me which club to purchase so that I don't look like poser.

thanks.

I hope this helps.

Given that people who wear loud clothing are less intelligent, a beginning golfer (or high hdcp) should wear earth tones. I can't think of a more damaging aura to put off than, "Not only am I trying to get better, but I am not smart enough to pull this off." And for me, when I am practicing, I find the aura of my fellow golfers to be damaging to my psyche while I lay sod over my ball working on my trajectory. The struggling and stupid vibe is too much for me. If I see that guy on the range, I will usually simply stay in the car/ bar/ or pro shop until that guy leaves. Equipment; I believe anything more expensive than a canvas bag with one pocket is unacceptable. Anything more is ostentacious and simply the wrong image. Old clubs (circa 20th century) should also be employed.

10-20 hdcp. Generally earth tones, though the shirt can be a more vibrant color. No pastels or rich colors, though. Pants/ shorts must be conforming colors (khaki, british khaki, navy). On the range, I find the 10-20 hcp player to be OK to be around, but again, if the clothing is too much I generally think the guy is a poser and useless... usually less intelligent, and most of their opinions are probably not correct. Their aura is generally a negative for me, though I find if I can move 8-10 stalls down, the negative vibes are low enough that I am still able to lay sod over my shots. Equipment; I think a carry bag with the legs is OK, again, avoid to many pockets. A player of this caliber does not deserve a bag with multiple pockets so they can play in comfort by bringing along their personal amenities on the course. Once a player hits the 20 hcp point they can purchase a nylon bag. The clubs can be cavity backs, circa 2005... a 10 hcp can move all the way to 2008 models.

3-10. Colored shirts are OK. Pants/ shorts with some color, maybe even a muted plaid would be OK. Shirts with logos are OK, including shirts with logos of courses they have played. Until this point, an individual cannot wear golf course logo'd apparel. Also at this level of play, because this is a better than average golfer, you can afford to put off the vibe of stupid on the golf course. Personally, I can practice near this golfer, but not too close. The stupid factor oftentimes throws off my mojo and I no longer lay sod, but start to hit them thin. I get a little jumpy if they are too close. Equipment; the bag could be large enough for rain clothes. A possible carry/ cart bag mix. The clubs can be thin top-line clubs, but definitely not blades. No one can hit a blade. If they have new clubs, they must be presented with a disclaimer that these are the first new clubs since at before 2009.

3 and below. These individuals can wear anything they like as long it is accepted by the course. They can play whatever equipment they want. The aura they project is one of harmony and tempo. I regularly seek these individuals on the range and simply try to get sucked into their vortex of greatness. I cannot remember a time on the range when their aura did not enhance my driving range experience, and for that, I can only thank those low hcp players for being near me. Including the one's who advertise their ignorance with colorful clothing.

In fact, if I ever own a golf course I will have a low hcp range time, with Rickie Fowler gear to be lent to these players while they practice. Kind of like adult hour at the public pool.

This is unbelievable. I was not aware that there has been a theorem for determining the acceptable physical appearance of the specific skill level golfer. Although if you are decked out in trendy tour wear and cant hit a golf ball, you look a bit silly but determining a persons intelligence level by the brightness of color they choose? I wear loud colors as well as muted colors. You have no knowledge of my intelligence or golf game skill and expertise. I am sorry but I find this post the epitome of ignorance.

If this post was meant out of irony or wit then I retract the previous statement but I can't seem to tell anymore what is serous and what isn't. Especially on the internets. Plus I have had 3 glasses of wine tonight.

Also, if you can tell me which club to purchase so that I don't look like poser.

i don't care about "that guy" on the range, but lord help me, if you want to chat and talk it up on the range you should go to a cafe or something. i hate talkative/loud people on the range.

A loud talkative guy on the range with a bluetooth headset. The holy grail.

Completely made up, I should have stated that. I just took the previous 7 pp and formed "general rules"
