Its just the nature of golf club marketing. We often feel like the more money we spend on something the lower our scores will be. Technology is certainly improving more every year but many amazing golfers still have drivers from 3+ years ago. Its all about the confidence you have in the equipment you game.

Looks pretty cool to me, but I can see it is not for everyone. Taylormade should have options for the look of the driver like in solid white or other solid colors to meet everyone's taste. Some may like the driver and not the graphics and will shy away from it.
Agreed. TM sounds super confident in this driver even with the gaudy graphics. Some people are already saying that it could be the greatest selling driver of all time. No surprise there, it is TM we are talking about here.

I talked to one of the TM engineers about this driver. The crown graphics were specially engineered to actually frighten you while you swing the club so that as the club head comes into your field of vision, it startles you and engages your natural "hot pan" response. On average testers gained 3 mph.

The only problem they encountered during preliminary testing was that 90% of testers actually let go of the club during the swing for some reason, and many were heard muttering something to the effect of "What the F... WAS that?"

The good news is, even after you become conditioned and the club doesn't scare you anymore, you still swing just as fast in an attempt to make the crown graphics a blur.

________________________

One of the positives of ho'ing clubs is that you eventually realize that pretty much every club out there is created equal nowadays. All that's left to do is just pick what looks good to you (with your specs of course), or that's a brand you like, because there is no real difference in performance anymore.

God I hate the white or anything that's not black or metallic gray like the old titleist drivers. The only other color i'd be ok with is brown
from wood....but because it's actually made of wood.

All the pros and cons about the looks seems to take the stage here. I have not read all the comments here but I will say I have hit this beast and while the scuderia paint scheme will detour some, the performance and tour play will most likely prevail to sway many of us to try it. While the looks got me at first I was quick to move on as I usually do. The same with the white paint of the r11. I was even more shock a few years ago. But soon got over it.

I hit this cannon and will tell you this. They made the sound better. Doesn't sound like the RBZ Tour but is a more muted sound than the last R11, but also has a deep yet loaded thuuud. I only hit one head but I loved the sound. The flight and trajectory were awesome and I just remember knowing that it was going to be a contender for 13. Zak is busy all week doing back to back comparisons on the trackman vs last years to see if we can develop some objective data.

Head over is goos to. Feels like a better quality heavier material. My short take is this will be a winner. Head sounds great and flight seems dead on. Can't wait to throw in my gamer shaft and see how it performs.

thats one thing i really like about it when we hit Sean's in Naples. Sound was great. I have the RBZ Tour and it sounds very tingy, and as much as i love that driver, the sound just isnt right. im really looking forward to gaming the R1 because the limited time we had hitting it we all loved it.

though we were hitting it with an $800 shaft

I would assume shft tech is like anything in golf... This years $800 shaft will be next years $200 shaft, and the year after will get the head OEM graphics and called a "crappy made-for" shaft..

All joking aside, is a $800 shaft really better than a "crappy made-for" shaft? I always was under the assumption that the best shaft is the best fit for a player's swing and matched to the head?

You know guys I don't mind the white, actually love matte finishes and R1 name is significantly better than Rocketwhatever BUT the crown graphics push it too far, just feels like it distracts from this clubs real potential. It's being fussy I know but it bugs me, same kinda feeling I get when a professional athlete says "it's a business"...BB

Caesar answered the $800 question for me in another thread. He said its some custom Oban White (different than the standard Oban White). It's $800 for the R1 head with the custom shaft and apparently it has some cool packaging.
packaging alone is worth the $800

not

i dont know much info about the shaft except that everyone loved it and it looked perfect with the white head

your right, the perfect shaft is the one that fits the person swinging, an $800 shaft will not fit a 19 handicapper (most times) and may not even fit a 2 handicap (myself)

easyyy, it was the oban white (custom somehow) i dont have much info on the shaft because we were not allowed to hit it infront of the trackman since no one else was allowed to see it.

the flight passed the eye test with flying colors and the combination was longggg and low spinning

The graphics don't bother me i wont see then when hitting a ball. What upsets me is that they changed the adapter Of course all it will do it delay me in purchasing one till i can get the shaft i want with an adapter.

I am looking at a New Grafolly Blue for one, so will wait till i can get that setup for it. I do love my r11s.

If there is going to be a shootout, I'd challenge you to try this:

Get a "standardized" shaft like Blueboard 73, Project X, or some Matrix or Oban shaft. But make sure the EXACT shame shaft is used in the R9/R11/R1.

Same length, same loft, same swingweight.

I'd be willing to wager a bottle of your favorite label they will all be within a few yards of each other if the only variable is the head and the lofts/face angles of each head are consistent.
