Longest Hybrid/Driving Iron

Hey Guys,

This is my first post as a member and am really excited about everything this site has to offer. I just recently started building a new bag. Right now I have Driver, 4-PW Callaway Apex CF 16's (great irons) in the Project X 6.0. Not sure my exact swing speed but I hit my drives about 275-280. My question is, I'm not going to carry a 3 wood in my bag for numerous reasons but I want the strongest, longest “hybrid/driving iron” for mostly off the tee. I have a high launch so I need something that would have less spin. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

I think Mizuno is the only one making a 1iron, check out the Mizuno MH5 1 iron but be careful you can reach a point where the 2 iron will go longer due to there being to little loft. I love my Srixon U45 2iron off the tee on tight shots or where trouble comes into play at around 260 I will hit the 2iron just short of trouble.

Happy hunting

Callaway XHot Pro 2 is really hot, but I'm not a fan of the head shape. If you're looking for a setup that produces lower launch and missles...I'm a big fan of the Titleist 915H 2 hybrid turned down .75* and with a Tour AD-BB. If you have the swing speed, you can handle the shaft and what it produces. If you don't prefer a "boardy" shaft...you can go another direction but that Titleist has works wonders for me.

If you're not going to carry a fairway wood i would highly recommend a hybrid over a DI. There's nothing wrong with height - that's an advantage when it comes to fairway woods and low lofted hybrids.

I'd recommend a 17-19* hyrbid. I'd take time to try different shafts and find something that fits. First thing that comes to mind is something like a 17* Titleist hyrbid with a Diamana whiteboard (low launch).

I agree with his comment about a hybrid like that - if you're a righty, I would look into the Titleist 816H1 17* with a Diamana White 90 hybrid shaft, Stiff or X - the X you would need a quick transition because that thing is stiff.

I can't speak as to pure distance, but I've been happy with my Mizuno MP-H4 3 and 4 utilities. I am also a high-launch hitter and find the utilities to offer a more penetrating trajectory than any hybrid I've ever hit. I would not hesitate pick up a 2 utility of the same model, except that right now I am comfortable enough with my Cobra AMP 4 wood at that distance. I probably will pick up a 2 utility if I decide to go back to a 3 wood instead of the 4 wood.

I've owned all the driving Irons and in my opinion the cobra utility is the longest and easiest to launch. Plus most forgiving. Pair it with a low spin graphite shaft and it's as long as most 3 woods. But the best part is , it isn't s hook prone as the 712u , Tmb or any of the others ..

Trying to find the same thing as u.

Trying out the Ping i25 19 degree hybrid against a Wilson V4 #2 driving iron and a Ping rapture #2 driving iron.

Tested these out a few times at the heated driving range the Wilson is the biggest surprise so far.

Cheap as heck as well.

Best of luck in your search.

Be careful about just the "lowest hybrid". I used to take the same approach and didn't carry a FW and just used a 14* Idea Pro ala Rickie Folwer a long time ago. If you don't have the swing speed it'll just fall out of the air. And honestly same with the 1-iron driving iron clubs. I'd look at hybrids in the 17* range with a mid launch shaft. You can go the trusty Ping Anser route. Still the longest hybrid I've ever hit. I have a 17* with an Aldila Tour Blue in it that switches back and forth with my i25 5-wood. My brother plays a 20* with a stock shaft and he can hit it well over 250 all day long.

I have a TEE XCG-V 16* with a White Tie that soars and seems to go forever. Any of the TEE 16 or 17 should work similarly. The XCG-V has a little larger head than some of the newer ones. Patience on EBay will yield some good cheapies with TEE. The Alpha V5 hybrids are long and deep faced -- the 16s pop up from time to time on the Bay but the 13* has unicorn status. The Adams Super S and Super LS look more like fairways -- they don't have the best sound but they do perform. The Super S had a 15*. The XTD Ti is good, too, not as large as the two Supers, but just as long.

Just found an Alpha V5 16* on the Bay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/16-Alpha-Version-5-HI-COR-15-3-3-3-Titanium-Hybrid-Used-/152434861876?hash=item237dd36734:g:L0gAAOSwdGFYoMMn

If I didn't already have three of them, I'd be bidding for this one, too

Everyone's definition of "too high" might be a little different, so for some context, I had an 18* X2 hot pro hybrid which I hit really well off the fairway and off of the tee, but into the wind I lost a lot of distance because of how high I hit it. Prior to that I had an 18* Adams Pro Black hybrid, which has a more penetrating ball flight, but after switching to a Mizuno MP H5 3 iron, the gap in distance between by 3 iron and hybrid was too small. I considered getting a 16* in the pro black, but finding one in good condition with the shaft I wanted was almost impossible. The gapping between the 3 iron and X2 hot was better, but the the height made it almost unplayable for me in windy conditions. I have since switched to a Mizuno MP H5 1 iron and love it. It might be a bit harder to hit off of the deck than the hybrids, but it is awesome off of the tee and has a much flatter ball flight than any hybrid I've hit. Obviously, your mileage may vary, but if you're a high ball hitter in the same way I am, a driving iron like the H5 is probably the better choice for you.

Best bet for a modern UDI type of club is probably either Apex ,U46/65 or H5. For more of a regular style hybrid, I know that the Nike vapor I play goes down to 17* and when struck well, goes about as far as a 3w, maybe 5-10 yards shorter.

Like others said, if you play a 17* UDI or hybrid, make sure you've got the SS to back that up or you are using a high launch shaft otherwise.

The Adams Super LS Hybrid is BY FAR the lowest spinning and longest hybrid or even wood ever made.

It spins 1000 rpm less than anything else. I had the 17* and it went further than and 3 wood I've tried, and I had a few others hit it with the same result. My buddy swings shallower than I do, and his average spin with it was 2100 rpm.

However, it feels/sounds horrible, and it is wild and unforgiving if you miss the center. I replaced it with a SLDR 17* hybrid. Lost 15 yards but much better in every other way.

So my recommendation would be the SLDR. The newer TM hybrids are just as long/longer, but the SLDR is more forgiving due to its bigger size

I like the Callaway driving irons if you are not a fan of fairway woods. If you want to hit it low you can. If you want to hit it higher you can. Just by adjusting your ball position. Front for high and back for low. I find that the wider I swing on my arc the higher I hit the ball. Also focus on a more upright swing. The flatter you swing the lower you will hit it. If your clubhead speed is 110 plus with driver then this will be a good club. If not I would go with some forgiving driving irons from another manufacturer. The new taylor made driving irons are supposed to do that. Of course an x flex shaft with a higher kick point will get the ball down. I use the KBS Tour X flex and it is awesome for me. My driver head speed is 118 for reference. The Callaway apex is only $100 bucks most places. I would go with a 4 iron for higher flight and 3 for more boring. If you are a 8 handicap or less 2 iron would be fine.

TaylorMade P790 UDI with Hzrdus black 6.0 85g hybrid shaft is hands down the best driving iron I've played. Too bad they've discontinued the model due to the new GAPR line. 17 degree loft and the hzrdus graphite shaft is a combo that gives you low penetrating trajectory with low spin. Have to say that this club is also long. I hit it to trackman using prov1 237yd carry and total 259yd. Against the wind it is as long or longer than my Callaway Rogue 3 wood because it is easier to keep the ball flight lower and get longer roll. Great for stinger drives. Surprisingly easy to hit off the deck and even from light rough too. Considering your handicap and length with the driver, and as you said high trajectory, hzrdus black 6.0 85g hybrid could be spot on as a shaft to keep it low, which ever club head you may choose to go with.

Callaway Alpha 815 20* turned down to 19*, I have mine paired with a Fubuki AX 400h x.

Damn this thing is a fairway finding rocket launcher, that Fubuki combined with the 19* hits mid flight low spinning bullets.

It’s my go to club off the tee when it’s windy but mostly I use it on par4’s when it either has a dogleg or a break in the fairway about 260m out.

I will also add the Diablo Edge Tour hybrid but prolly no chance of getting any of those new or like new, I played these with ProLaunch V2 Tour hybrid shafts.

OMG, these are sweet & crazy long too, played a 18* & 24* for 7 years, trying numerous hybrids in between but only the 815 won me over, in all honesty, I think it’s the shaft that won did it for me here.

Driver ss is 113-117 & play 75x

3W also 75x

The Fubuki AX 400h x just feels that much more stable than the V2 for me, would love to try the DET with an AX 400h.

The Cleveland Mashie hybrids came in a 15.5 degree version. That was called the "M1". I have the M5 and it's my "get out of jail" club. I can't hit it poorly. I have no idea if that performance translates to the M1, but man do I love that thing.

They're also like 40 bucks on ebay.

Or the 17 degree. You had better be bringing the mustard to elevate the 15. But whichever, the Adams Super LS is the winner here.
