7 wood?

High Draw

Recommended Posts

Anyone out there playing a 7 wood instead of a hybrid. I have tried several hybrids and don’t seem to get along with them. I’m a good long iron player, maybe I should just hit a actual 3 iron. Just curious if anyone else has compared a 7 wood to a comparable hybrid loft with higher swing speed. Thanks in advance for any replies.

A sweeping swing works with either type club. I've seen some who take shallow divots with woods. Since a hitting booth at the golf store has no turf interaction, why not go to Goodwill or pick a cheap used 7 wood out of the used club rack. Keep it in the bag for a while and see if you like it versus a hybrid. If you're a good long iron player, do you find yourself hitting draws with the hybrid?

I have tried many hybrids but never loved one. Golfers seem to either love or hate hybrid clubs. Now I play 4 and 7 wood combo and 7 wood is my favorite club in the bag these days. 7 wood head is more forgiving than hybrid head and the length of the club is short enough to be versatile. The trajectory off 7 wood can be too high for some though.

I use a Titleist 917F2, 21° with the stock Diamana Blue shaft. It is a great, easy to use club that just needs a little experimenting with to get your preferred setup.

My next longest club is a hybrid. I've always found the lower lofted hybrids more difficult to use than their equivalent high lofted fairways.

FWIW, I'm a sweeper.

Just found a nice third round draft pic on EBay to experiment. Brand new Taylormade Slider TP 5HL (21*) with a Matrix HD6 for $60 bucks! The combo looks sharp too, now to see if it can compete with my beloved Ping Rapture 2 iron. BB

Fairway: Titleist 917F2

As you can see, I'm in never-neverland regarding your question.

I played 4W and 7W XRails for several seasons, and now have my Alpha 815s tuned to those lofts. And, I also have FlyZ 3H and 4H.

I'm playing around with different shaft lengths and loft fine tunes to see the best mix of clubs for distance gaps.

  • Final solution will probably be: { 7W, 3H, 4i} pick two out of three.

The 7W is a "go to" club... longish par 3, blaster out of medium rough, bridges 4W and 4H for distance. 3H goes about same distance, but launches lower and hotter. In past I swapped out 7W for 3H in Nov. - March timeframe, when the winds are stronger and the rough thinner.

------------------------------------------

Note: People who hook hybrids should pay attention to the head design. Most standard hybrids have noticeable offset, and a draw bias. If you go with a pro or tour head with a square face angle, this can sometimes lessen likelihood of hooks. Also: Tour Edge equipment reps tout the new CBX hybrid as left-proof.

I did game the Ping G10 7w and 4w for the longest time; mainly because I was a flat swinger/shallow swinger at the time and therefore the 3 iron was too low of a running shot.

Somebody mentioned about hybrids and for me, they are in no man’s land.

I’ve gone thru swing lessons the last couple of years on having my hands high on the back swing and at the moment have no problem launching 3 and 2 irons.

My 5 wood is high enough as it is, I can’t imagine what a 7 wood do nowadays?

Ok... to preface... my bag setup is d, 3w, 5w, 4i-p, 50 54 58. I'm currently playing off 6.

I am completely comfy w every club except my 4i. I hit it well enough. But dont flight it high enough to hold a green appropriately from 200 out.

I have tried hybrid and 7w. Hybrid just doesnt work for me...my miss is low left, and this just makes it worse.

7w I am love hate with. It flies too high. I live where there is lots of wind. So, I am either short or long... or im throwing it in the back of my stance and delofting it...at which point its now basically a 5w. So when its windy, i'll either just hit 5i or 5w.. On the other hand, in still conditions... its a hero club. my home track has long par 3s. and on a still day its been amazing.

but... overall it gets me in more trouble than the 4i. plus when its windy, the 4i is great for that linksy shot. and if i have a forced carry, the i can manufacture it with 5i or 5w.

anywho ymmv, but thats my experience after tinkering with this 20-24 degree part of my bag for 5 years.

I've been using a 7w for the past 5 years or so. Took out the 3 iron and it was a huge change for the better. Much easier to hit, nice high trajectory, and a real confidence builder. I just ordered a new set of Ping's with a G400 7 wood. Try it, you'll like it!!
