7 wood?

High Draw

This thread deserves more discussion.

It's not for everybody. Personally, 7 woods are for weaker players.

Back to the OP, he mentioned he is a stronger iron player than you might as well try out a 3 iron.

7 handicap is pretty weak to be making a statement like that. Not impressed.

Yeah. Weaker player like Vijay Singh, Jaxon Dufner, etc etc

Yeah, a club that launches high and stops cold on approach shots. But yes, please let's categorize all the LPGA professionals and people who simply want another option as weak. But hey, he's obviously better than them.

I have a Taylormade v-steel 21 degree 7 wood heading my way as of today. Found one in great condition on ebay and for 50£ it feels like a real bargain. Been looking one in decent condition for at least a couple of months now after testing a friends v-steel 5 wood and I'm glad something finally appeared!

Haven't tried a 7 wood before and I'm excited to see how it performs with my ~100 mph driver swing!

Senior. Any 7 woods I've tried the past several years went more like 4H distance for me, not 3H.

Added the G SFT 19* 5 Wood this year and it fits the bill well replacing a 20* hybrid for which I lost some distance presumably from aging swingspeed.

I recently traded the G SFT 19° 5 wood for a G 20.5° 7 wood. Opened up the 5W to help with the lefts but still was aware of that possibility. Think the G SFT is more left biased than the G400 SFT, and I'm still playing the 7w slightly open too. Maybe lI ose a couple of yards, but the 1/2 shorter shaft and smaller head should give some more shot options. So far though the 7W is not as good from the rough as I would have anticipated, but that may be largely user error and my current back issues that prevent me really going after it.

My 14 year old son murders his. (Adams) He hits it off the deck pretty high and very straight. He uses it like I use a 4 iron. It is his get out of anything and long par 3 go-to every time.

I use mine for the exact same thing. I have the fist generation Tight Lies 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11. (I think they are 1st gen.) I game the 5 and 7. The 7 is the "getout of jail" club. Deep rough, on the deck, longish Par 3's. Love the thing.

Off the stub tee about 170 -180 yards well hit, off the deck about 160 well hit. I find I can can control it pretty well.

I love my 7-wood, nice high shots from about 230 out that generally land soft. I also feel that it's easier to hit a 3/4 shot with a higher lofted wood than say a 3 or 5 wood or long iron. My Ping G 7-wood is stamped at 20.5 degrees, which I believe was a 5-wood twenty years ago.....

Agree with this, today's 7W is what used to be considered a 5W.

I don't know, my TM V-Steel (circa 2005 ish) is 21°. Most modern 7 woods are 20°-21°.

  • 4 weeks later...

Loooove me some 7Wood action.

Driver

3wood (15* for long bombs off the tee and 2nd into par5's)

7Wood (21* shafted to the length of a 5wood and clubface is 1* open)

4hybrid (22*)

5iron (26*)

The 7Wood has a longer shaft for gapping. I can hit down on it to deloft and get 5wood distance or I can choke down and ease off it for less distance. I find it much easier to ease off on a wood than a hybrid.

This may be my favourite club in the bag. So versatile and consistent.

That is a good idea. I have a G30 5 wood and 7 wood but only room for one in my bag. Might take the longer shaft from the 5 and put it in the 7 for a little extra distance. Since it only takes a couple of minutes it might be worth a try.

Have any reviews on how this worked out for you? In the last year or so I have finally learned to use driver confidently instead of 3w off the tee, now my problem is having low liners into par 5s with a 3w or my 2h. Looking to remove the 2h and replace with my 7w. Kind of like the 5w shaft idea to have some different options.

**Update about a year later.** The G 7 wood is firmly in my bag (set at big

minus ).

I picked up a Cobra 7/8 wood and love it. Knocked both the 3 and 4 hybrid out of the bag. Has a movable weight (front/back) so if it's windy you can flight it down, and if not your shots come in high and soft. The hosel lets me set the loft so it's right between what the hybrids were. Works well for me and now I get an extra wedge.

Love my 7 wood, but it doesn't get play every round. I use it for shorter courses or courses with heavier rough, as that 7 will dig just about anything out. I find it's a tremendous club for the rough.

I replaced my Ping G400 5 wood with a G400 7 wood last season, and the new club isn't leaving the bag any time soon. The 7 launches easy, but doesn't balloon. I also replaced my 4h with a G400 9 wood. Both clubs are easy to work both ways.

Old school TM Pittsburgh Persimmon fairway woods had a 17* 3 wood, 20* 4 wood, 23* 5 wood and a 27* 5 wood. They were good fairway "metals".

Love my 7 wood. Currently playing Callaway 2014 Big Berthas with the 3 wood turned up to 17* and the 7 wood stock at 21*. Gives great gapping between the woods and to my XR 5 iron (23* and +1") without giving too many options in that range. My usual course has 3 par 3s that play around 200 yards and the 7 wood is perfect.
