The right tools?

what training exercises are good to achieve faster speed? I would prefer training at home, don’t like Gyms! ?

It'd be interesting to hear from players who have increased their speed feel to be the low hanging fruit.

Check off 2-3 things just to get rid of the speed killers or something along those lines.

In billiards for instance, learning to stop and draw the cue applies to improving 50pct plus of your game.

Improve your swing and learn to hit the ball half the normal distance with a given club using a small swing...for example...my full golf course 9 iron is comfortably 155....I practice hitting it 75-90 yards all the time. Plus you will learn ball flight control as a side benefit.

I just picked up this training aid recently. It was suggested by a current WLD competitor that I met. He uses it. On the simulator a couple weeks ago he was carrying the ball 395 consistently in the grid.

I bought the adapter and installed it on a stock shaft I had laying around. https://www.unlockedgolf.com/

can you explain why this helps with Driver swing speed?

i am happy with my iron distances, but my driver swing speed could be few mph faster. Sometimes I even think the Flightscope doesn’t measure it correctly.

if that would be the case the carry distance would be shorter as it actually is. I just don’t believe the FS gets my ss wrong.

Maybe this is naive, but when I first started, I tried to follow all the instructions I had read, or watched. I hit the ball pretty straight, but not very far. One day, I said to a friend "watch this silly crap" and took a violent swing at it. He looked stunned and said "you crushed that." I probably would'nt've even noticed if he hadn't said something. You could try taking some reckless swipes at it, just to see what happens. If it shows promise, then you could work on cleaning it up.

Helps you to learn to control arm speed. Monte talks about it a lot and as crazy as it sounds, it's true. I have issues when I go on FS too. Something goes haywire in my brain and I start swinging awkwardly and hit it super short. For example...iron fitting had me carrying 6 iron 165-170. And that's with normal, good balls. On the course and normally I'm 195 carry. Idk why that is but i'm mental lol

OP, there is no one answer to this; it depends 100% on your swing and your body.

As others have mentioned, the first place to start is with the technical aspects of your swing. Poor mechanics will limit your ability to swing fast like nothing else, both because of poor positions and because you will have to hang onto the club instead of really releasing it in order to get it to the ball more or less squarely.

If your swing is good and not a major limitation, then gaining speed could be a matter of strength, or flexibility, or mobility. There is no way to know which of those things are issues without getting looked at by somebody who really knows what they are doing. That's why on this board you see posts from guys who say they got longer from lifting weights, and guys who say they didn't, posts from guys who got faster using Super Speed type protocols and guys who didn't, posts from guys who got faster from yoga and guys who didn't, and on and on.

It's no different than any other medicine; you don't take the same thing for every illness. Figure out what ails you and go from there, and the best way to do that is going to be going to the right doctor.

Economy of motion., the quicker you are the more efficient you'll be and the straighter you'll hit the ball. If you want to increase swing speed and ball control, look at the guys who hit the ball long distances with the least effort.

I learned this concept from Mike Austin and his protege Mike Dunaway. Through Austin I was able to meet and play golf with Mike Dunaway. He had a smooth effortless looking swing. His drives flew between 370-390 yards with a slight fade and he wasn't coming out of his shoes to do it.

My son is playing in a simulator league this winter up here in NY. While he plays I have been using a bay to work on my swing and just for fun. Funny how that can make a difference, about an hour and a half a week and my swing speed is up on irons by about 5-7 mph. On drives I can’t seem to increase beyond about 105 SS, but ball speed has gone way up. My goal is 150 bs though I have not reached it yet. I typically am around 135-140 bs with an average of about 102 SS. Working on bringing down my spin rate at the same time. So, once a week in a sim bay could make a big difference, imho.

Check out the thread on Superspeed training. The chatter right now is that you only need the Blue stick. So no need to buy all 3 sticks. I’ve seen my speed increase about 10 mph doing that this winter 3 days a week in my garage.

There is definitely a lot of truth to this. Just having that instant feedback on SS and distance allows you to see what a fast swing feels like. Usually what feels faster is really just swinging harder and results in a slower SS.

Even one of those small $200 launch monitors can help. They aren't precise enough to really dial in yardages, but they they do a good job giving relative numbers one swing to the next. In other words, you probably won't get the correct yardage or SS, but you'll know if it goes up or down.

Beyond that, mechanics is far more important than fitness (unless you're significantly out of shape).

You might be interested in this:

Pure Distance Golf Drive 400 | PURE DISTANCE GOLFI am about 10 weeks into it. The good = cheap, $25. Includes warmup, basic rolling and stretching drills + basic at home exercises (I go to the gym regularly so I'm not 100% dedicated to this programs exercises) + guide / drills to increase swingspeed. The basic premise is that if you do not swing as fast as possible in training - how can you swing fast during play? Seemingly simple concept. Takes about 20-30 minutes every other day (warm up routing and swings).

Since it is winter, I cannot say if I see any tangible speed gains yet, but here is what I observed....

+ Swinging very fast during training is forcing me to improve my balance, efficiency of swing in order to hear/feel faster speeds.

+ My swing is getting shorter, smaller. I am feeling more/different pressure points than in the past. I feel more whipping action.

+ Weight transfer feel is more prominent than in the past.

Negative is that the program does not necessarily improve your (proper) technique...therefore, it is possible to train hard but not improve some key flaws in your swing. However, swinging hard seems to put the club in the right spots on its own or you know when you are swinging hard but not maximizing your power.Side work is still necessary to improve your technique, but I can see value in this program. For $25 I feel it is worth it, you learn something you could not otherwise.

I took a lesson and the pro told me on the driver swing to hold nothing back and swing as fast as I can. It took quite a bit of simulator time to get used to ripping at the ball as fast as possible, but now that my coordination has caught up it has been working amazing!! Last year I was 90-91, this year I am up to 94-95. In conjunction with that, I did shorten my driver by approximately 3/4 of an inch. I am not very tall, so I have a hard time swinging through as fast as I can with a driver without catching a bit of the ground. Shortening the drive helped me tremendously!

I used the super speed system last year and got up to 95 mph from an average of 90. Over the winter I’ve been working on my swing and recently picked up Drive for Dough and The Efficient Swing from Monte’s site and it’s been a dramatic improvement since. There are some great drills in there to get you unstuck, synced up and swinging fast at the right time. Since working on his wedge drill my speed has shot up to 103-105 and I’m hoping it will keep going up as I get more familiar with the moves and drills. Once I get it more dialled in I’m probably going to go back to the speed sticks and try and get a bit more out of them when I have proper technique down.

Something that helped me gain swing speed was taking weights and sliding them down on my driver shaft and swinging as hard as I could. I did that for 10 swings or so and then I would take the weights off and swing at a comfortable 80% and slowly that 80% swing got faster and faster but felt just as easy the whole time.
