No new acquistions...?

Don't know that these are terribly classic, but I'll pretend, since they're (theoretically) based off a 1982 Ram wedge. :)

Being a Ram fanboi, I occasionally peruse ebay for Ram stuff. Which I largely don't buy, as I don't have the room any longer, without unloading a few things. Then I ran across this, a NOS Ram 1982 Watson Commemorative nickel 58°, and impulse kicked in. It will be in my bag once I get the lie bent to fit me.

Very nice NRJyzr.

What's the year of manufacture on it? Pretty sure most guys around here still think early 90's clubs are classic.....

Scooter, I'm not sure. Ram went through what I like to call a "nickel phase" starting in 1997 or so, I would assume it's from around the same time. I also have a nickel 56° Commemorative wedge, that has the Troon Grind, which I picked up around 2001 or 2002 at 2nd Swing. I'm sure it had been lying around for a while by then.

Repeating myself, because this is supposed to be based on Watson's wedge from his 82 Pebble win, I figured it's close enough. LOL

OK, you guys recognize an eBay seller by the carpet in the photo?

Not sure if I'm scared or impressed.

Just back from range testing the new to me '88 Redline's and '90 BH Grind's.

Summary: Happy days. Apex Redline's are superb. Near new condition so they're going in the bag for a long time.

The Grind's set up almost identically to the Redline's but the previous owner had very small hands so I couldn't objectively compare. They'll be getting mid-size cord grips and going in my spare bag for the beach.

Actually, I am doing neither. I use a sponge brush to apply the varnish. Seems to eliminate runs and too much / too think coverage per application. The screws were not sawed through by me. I use a pick of sorts to clean out the grooves, so perhaps the original owner did this or just happened to be lined up that way. I have a couple clubs like this but not all are..

Still working on perfecting the process but each one I do seems to get better..

Just starting on Macgregor M75TW Tourney's 3 & 4 woods. Looking forward to these finished products..!

Very nice job on the refinish. Looks great from this vantage point. Couple of questions CC:

1. Was it just a recoat? Or strip, stain and recoat? By your comments, thinking it was the prior.

2. If just a recoat, did you apply over the existing varnish? What prep did you perform prior? Light sand?

3. How many coats of varnish did you apply? Any sanding between coats. Like the idea of the sponge brush for controlling the evenness of the application.

4. Any special kind of varnish used? Have some spar varnish that I used on some outdoor furniture. Two years in and it's holding up fine. Thinking it would work well for club heads.

Have SEOM 2, 3, 4 TP that I would like to recoat this winter. TIA CC for any advice. Don't want to totally screw it up.

In the case of this club, it was a strip, sand, recoat and some paint work (sole plate and score lines). The stain color was really nice and held up very well when I did the first strip and sand, so I kept it.
I removed all the old varnish with this gel varnish remover I have found, I love this stuff as being gel, I can be more precise, and also it can be left on as long as I need to allow me to work on multiple things at once.
For this club, I applied 3 coats. Normally will do 4 - 5 but it is based on what I need to do through the process to get the desired results. Always scuff the surface between coats (either steel wool 0000 or 600 grit wet sand) depending on if there are any imperfections I need to deal with or not. I use a pick after the 2nd coat in the score lines to clean them up and then apply new paint. I apply paint to the sole plate prior to the first layer of varnish.
I use Cabot Spar Varnish High Gloss and it seems to do a nice job.

Hope this helps!

Just picked this refinished MacGregor Armour Tourney 4-wood off eBay. Rec No. 2279 with a mostly sanded off DuPont Lucite stamp. Some past owner put a newer Neumann leather grip on. I'm going to try and get this one in my bag for next season and contemplating a full time switch to full persimmon or at least fairway woods. I couldn't find the 2279 recording number in Kaplan. I'm assuming a 1940-42 model.

Do you sand the insert during the sanding phase?

Yes sanding the insert is needed to remove the varnish. Unless you are super careful, putting stripper onto the insert will damage it. Depending on the condition, I use 320 Wet Sand and then 600 Wet Sand on the face, clean out the score lines and you are good to go.

Thanks!

Well I had pretty good luck this week without trying. I don't know if you guys know this but in July I switched jobs I am now driving a truck for a metal recycling service. Now I look around quite a bit when I am on the yard. Most of the clubs I find are clone junk but I got lucky this week. yesterday I found 3 shafts that had been taken out 2 KBS Tours Stiff and a Rifle 6.0 stepless needless to say they went into my pickup and into the shop. Today they were loading my truck and stuff comes off the sides when they are loading until they pack it down. Lo and behold a club with a broken shaft came off and it was a Ping Eye2 Black Dot pitching wedge and it is the one with the sorta concave relieved sole. It is in the shop now.

Some newly acquired persimmon here. Can anyone help out with any info? I'm guessing mid-80s or thereabouts? How does persimmon match up with a graphite/born shaft? Does anyone know much about this shaft? It's branded Powerbilt by Aldila...

Persimmonman,

Your pre War Armour 4-wood is cool. It always amazes me as to how small the heads are on the 4. Even up through the 693and 945 in the 1950's.

Your post got me thinking about smaller, shallower clubheads. Here is, by far, the smallest driver head I have ever seen on any MacGregor, let alone an
Armour. Like yours, it is pre-war and has a model # I've never seen. I think it is 1654. As Charley Penna has stated several times, every MacGregor pro
had his own model number outlining his specs. Both our woods were special order.
Take a look at these photos. I set it up with a 693 driver and 3-wood. It is basically the same size as the 3, but with only about 10 degrees of loft.
