Black stone, Cantigny and HOE. Honorable mention to Stonewall Orchard.

I could dig that list.

HoE is excellent. I wish it was a little closer to me.

IWhat kind of condition was Big Fun in? I actually like the renovation at Dubs- really enjoy it and every time I play it I think man it must be tough for the 90+ or outing player!

Orchard Valley greens were sanded last night.... Aaarrrgggghh.

Also, the rough was really rough, just off the fairway and around the greens.

I was chipping from the green side rough an actually double hit the ball. That has never happened in my life.

HoE was in very fine shape today. Hope the storms stays away on Saturday.
Haven't played there yet this year but have been waiting for a nice calm day....
What bothered me was although everyone was on the green and watching the strike, nobody saw it.
When I called it on myself and cited 14-4 they all looked at me like I had three eyes.

Double hitting a chip? I call that 6th hole at George Dunne.

If you stay in the fairway, you can score. Otherwise, it'll be a tough day. It's rare to hit a good shot, and wind up in a bad situation.

You're welcome.

That last couple of years I wouldn't have dreamed of making the excursion to Rockford for Aldeen, but since the I-90 construction was completed it's basically a 6 lane runway from my front door (Randall Oaks golf course) all the way to Aldeen.

I'm looking forward to booking a tee time or two out there this year. It looks amazing.

Oh - and while we're throwing around our local favorites, how about The Highlands of Elgin? So many options off the tee on a lot of holes!! Some of the most well balanced risk/reward setups in the area.

I've been itching to get out and play, but I'm so bad I really just need to practice. When I woke up this morning I figured I'd work about a half day and maybe sneak on down to HoE and get a quick mid day round in, but then I'm thinking, man you suck so bad right now you probably should just go to the local range haha

Far from country club, but also far from being a goat track. Greens were in good shape but a bit shaggy and super slow, although with a few pin placements it's probably a good thing they were slow otherwise you'd be having balls roll right off the green. Otherwise the rest is typical Big Run, part of me wishes somebody would come in there and re-do the entire course to bring it up to current standards (leaving all the holes alone of course) but part of me loves the fact that I can go out there and it's cheap and in general not crowded.

I loved Dubs when I was a kid, my Dad and I would go out there once or twice a year for a round so I'm hoping they kept enough of what I remember in tact. I'm not good bunker player, but I tend to play better out of more difficult bunkers (which to this day I can't figure out). I'm looking forward to it.

I've not played it, but look at who was complaining about it, Phil, a guy who's known to miss the fairway a time or two. He criticized it, as did others who wanted it moved to Luke Donald's home course of Conway Farms, kind of an organized move IMO. A real shame as now we're left with no tour golf in the Chicagoland area, and when it does come back we get a limited field that's not nearly as fun as the Western Open was, again IMO. I miss that event, they killed it moving it to the 4th of July weekend or immediately before the British Open.

I could probably call the course but why not throw it out here first. Question for everyone:

If I book a morning time on GolfNow for Bowes Creek, is that the "member for a day" rate or is that just for 18 or something else? I'm assuming it's the 'unlimited play/range all day' but I should make sure before I book a time for me and my buddies.

Thanks in advance.

If it doesn't specifically say its member for the day then its just 18.

The bunkers are deep, and the sand is high quality, i.e. fluffy. If you're a low ball hitter like me, some of the fairway bunkers are indeed hazards, adding almost a stroke per hole.

If I recall correctly, several players said it was too difficult for the average player. Lol. Since when do they give a rats a** about the average player? Besides, Dubs was never a course for the average player. I believe Dubs has something like 8 sets of tees, so Joe Hacker should be able to find a suitable length. I'm guessing it's not uncommon for a high-capper to attempt to play from the tips (like the pros), get their a** handed to them, and then complain about the difficulty.

There were also comments about the multi-zoned greens. This probably originates from the same folks that miss the fairway. You have to be precise with your approaches to get into the right zone, otherwise it can be a tricky putt. 'Hard to do coming out of a deep fairway bunker or thick rough.

IMHO, the kvetching was a move to get the tournament moved to Conway Farms, plain and simple. I overheard someone mention at the BMW a few years back that corporate donations for the tournament almost doubled after the move to CF. Given that the location is closer to many corporate HQ's, this doesn't surprise me. CW certainly has more room for hospitality tents. However, that shouldn't be a knock against Dubs (the course).

With the arrival of "warm" weather, it's time to hit the road and play a handful of far-flung courses for the first time. Basically, with easterly winds tomorrow, I gotta get away from the lake. I'll be out at Prairie Bluff tomorrow morning. 'Not quite sure why I didn't play this course when I lived in Bolingbrook for years, but it's time for a visit. The weather tomorrow looks pleasant, although Sunday looks iffy at this point. The place looks pretty wide open, so hopefully the winds will be moderate.
