Ping's new Glide ES wedges: shot at the 2015 U.S. Open

Recommended Posts

I don't usually buy stuff without seeing it in person but these will likely be my next wedges. I loved the iWedge and had been hoping that Ping would bring out a wedge with that sole design to no avail. Until now.

That sole looks a lot like the new Callaway PM-Grind!
OMG! The Callaway PM grind is a straight rip off of the Ping Eye 2 wedge U grind. Callaway is ripping off Ping not the other way around. Ping
Guys....it's called sarcasm. Sorry, I thought it would be apparent.

Anyway, in all seriousness, for a wedge that's not pretty to look at I think Callaway's take on this category of wedge is much cleaner looking. Visually the way that top-line takes a sudden dive at the hosel on the Glide ES just rubs me the wrong way. Ping might have been the first, but I think Callaway "wore it better."
Funny but that's what I love about it. It's just so PING. Unlike Callaway which is just so PING and Scotty Cameron :-)
See that's the thing, I don't think the PM Grind is like a Scotty at all. Yes they took advantage of some cool coloring options, but the practice of porting wedges has been around much longer than Scotty Cameron putters. At least in the wedges there's a functionality to it whereas on Scotty's putters they are purely cosmetic.
I agree porting wedges has been around long before the Mac Daddy PM Grind Wedge but the point is, Callaway made it "look" like a Scotty. And they knew that most everyone that looked at that wedge would recognize Scotty Cameron aesthetics. This is what bothers me. If your going to be inspired by an old design, run with it and make it your own. Don't make it look like someone else's design. Having said that, I like and respect both Roger Cleveland and Phil very much.

Anyone know if these will only be offered in 56, 58 & 60?

I'm not a wedge grind expert, but the U-grind is really good out of the sand because the cup shape sole increases the effective bounce in that environment and the head sort of floats in the sand. The old Eye2 wedge was famous for this reason. Old is new this year with the PM and now these new wedges coming to market with the U sole.

Thanks but is this a good grind for chips and flops? I've got a lot of elevated greens at my course and you gotta hit a lot of delicate touch shots. I'm very good at that shot and I love a 60 degree around the greens. Looks like this is pretty versatile.

I change too much to list it. Working on that...

I had an i-Wedge a few years back with the U-sole and found the leading edge a little diggy. I think they typically play with less effective bounce than some other sole designs. Devils in the details though. Can't say for sure about these without seeing/playing them.

Excuse my naivety, but what is the advantage of the ES Glide? I'm in my 30s but didn't start playing golf until a few years ago due to shoulder surgeries. Thus, the Eye 2 and older equipment are "new" to me in a weird way. Thanks guys ...

From my experience this sole has a bit too much bounce for flops from tight lies. From the sand or rough though it is great!

Regarding the performance of this grind, I had a chance to demo several wedges a few weeks back including the Mack Daddy PM grind. It was absolutely automatic hitting from lies that I would describe as "lush fairway" along with light rough, in somewhat wet conditions as there was an on and off drizzle. I only wish I had the opportunity to give it a go off a really tight lie and out of the sand. May have replaced my 15+ year old Cleveland 60° 588 that day! Further disclaimer - I'm not even close to a good player, and was amazed at the consistency of the shots I was producing with this club.

Would a sole shape like this work well on full shots? Or is it better for delicate shots around the green?

There is a lot of bounce in the middle of the sole, so it works great (depending on your technique) from soft lies and sand. However there is an agressive grind in the heel and on the trailing edge so the effective bounce is not that big, and you can lay it open and slide the heel under the ball very easily from tight lies. The cup in the middle of the sole really increases the bounce for sand shots when you lay it open as well.

I personally like a lot of bounce in my wedges as long as the main bounce is not clear back at the trailing edge, (see Dan, Monte or Utley technique) This wedge allows you to hit lots of shots provided you use the right technique and has all the bounce most would need but also allows you to hit flops from most any lie IF you use the right technique. It is similar to the M grind on Vokeys but not exactly the same.

In short it is a very versatile grind, if you know how to use the wedge and take advantage of the different grinds, heel/trailing edge/cup in the middle with a good amount of bounce in the middle. Actual bounce angle is probably over 12* with the effective bounce playing a little less.
I think it really depends on your angle of attack. If you dig a bit, then no so much. If you can consistently find the bottom of your swing with your wedges, this is for you.

All the Glide wedges look great, and I can see this ES sole being really good around the greens and out of sand.

Really want to try one, but I am concerned about how they'll work on full shots. Thanks to the above posters for the information on full shots and how the sole bounce can work for different shots.

I currently play the M grind on my SM4 and for full shots it's fine, but my swing has shallowed over the last few years so I don't take massive deep divots like I used to when I first started playing. So these may be fine.

Still unsure on the sole (I've never tried an eye 2 type wedge - the horror!), and still not sure what lofts these will be available in. If it's only 56 and higher, then when it's time to replace my wedges I'll probably just go ES in the 58° as I primarily use that loft around the greens and from the sand.
