Vokey SM6's

Recommended Posts

Pulled the trigger a couple of days ago from Dan's. I'm guessing 2 weeks or so.

46/8 F Grind, Jet Black, TI S400 Black Onyx

52/8 F Grind, Jet Black, TI S400 Black Onyx

58/12 K Grind, Jet Black, TI S400 Black Onyx

With Z-Cord grips & Stamping, $597.

My biggest concern is the 58/12K. I love the full sole K grind but am a little concerned about going from 6* bounce to 12*. I know vokey offers the TVD low bounce K but I'm not interested. My current setup is SM4 52/8F, 58/6M which I've had for 4+ years and it's just time, those grooves are worn!

Whats the biggest disadvantage from going from M Grind to K Grind? I'm a good wedge player from 50 yards and out, but lately my chipping and pitching around the greens with my 58 has been very mediocre. I feel like Chicago wet conditions in the spring really don't translate well to lower bounce. I'm excited to put these puppies in the bag!

I had a similar change after being fit at MOG. I went from a 60M to a 60K. The fitter told me that the K would really help out of the sand here in Chicago. He also thought that around the greens would improve as well with the extra bounce on everything except a full flop shot off a tight lie. I don't play that shot here so I didn't mind. I have only had them out for two practice sessions at harborside but so far I am really glad I made the change. Some people love the stock K some people hate it. I have a feeling some people have an issue with saying that they play a "high" bounce. For me I like to play what works for me.

Thanks! The more I think about it the less I'm concerned, there's only a few courses in the summer where I would really need a low bounce lob wedge, and if I have to hit a flop from a super tight lie I'm doing something else wrong. I love Harborside's practice area, you should check out Golf Center Des Plaines during the week, 3 tiered driving range open all year and a lighted par 3 course that they keep in excellent shape, great place to grab a beer and play 9 with your buddies, they're open until midnight from May-October. 30 mins when there's no traffic from Lincoln Park. I definitely would attribute my wedge game improvement over the last two years to playing there once a week during the summer. Great range of holes from 80-200 yards.

that V grind looks interesting. I am a steep swinger, but opening the face of my 56 now strikes the fear of god in me because the leading edge sits up. Am I to believe this V grind allows me to have my cake (high bounce) and eat it too (open it up for short flops/chips)?

I'm not sure but interested in this as well. Love my SM6's but recently got a PM 64 to mess around with as I had an open spot in my bag. As it turns out I love that too. Was going to get a PM 58 to replace my 58K SM5 which I have the problem you just described with. However, if the V Grind fixes that, I'd be super pumped!

I was pretty set on steel grey but now Im loving that tour chrome after I saw a friends SM6s on the course. Has anyone went the tour chrome route and witnessed the blinding glare that some people talk about on a sunny day?

The glare is noticeable in certain lights and angles. I don't find it distracting frkm address it while playing. In my opinion, looks the best of the 3 options.

I thought I was set on Jet Black but the Steel Grey is looking good as well... decisions, decisions...

(sm5's) but the black look sooo good! I stripped the paint-fill, and when the black wears I'll strip it raw.

How did you strip the paintfill? I've wanted to do that to my SM5s.

I'm sure this has been mentioned before but I absolutely love the look of the Steel Grey. A course damaged my SM5 50 and 54, and offered to replace them for me. They ended up sending me SM6's which I appreciated but they were in Steel Grey instead of Jet Black like my SM5's. Since they were completely free, I decided not to create a hassle and actually really like the way they look. My Jet Blacks wore unevenly on the bottom half of the face of the wedge where the divot was taken due to the raw finish and it was starting to bug me a bit visually. Really happy with the way the Steel Grey looks on the course and in the bag. No reflection issue but a "sexy" finish.

Will any acetone work or does one work better. Klean-Strip? Jasco?

Thanks,

I definitely think that color is the best but supposedly it's the lowest selling. The person I talked to said people are either going chrome to match their irons or if they want a different look they go with the black for more contrast.

It was that reason I went with the steel grey. My previous set of wedges were chrome as I figured "how bad could the glare really be". It was very noticeable on the 60* to me during any sunny mid day rounds. The 56* and 50* were not as bad. I even have sunglasses on during 100% of my round and I thought it was bad. I'm 100% happy with the steel gray and don't regret buying that finish one bit. But I know what you mean about how sharp the SM6 in chrome looks.

Im starting to struggle a bit with the 56 S on full shots. I use it for full shots only. Going to swap it out for a 56F...

Can you explain why you are struggling?

strange I dont know - I hit the 52 fine and the 60 also an S great. Can't dial in the yardage with the 56 and seems like I hit it thin.. Maybe Ill have the lie checked. I vowed not to change any gear this year and I've been good. Maybe lack of skill is the problem

If you only hit full shots with it, the F is definitely the way to go.

Soft sand in Georgia and rough around the green... 60K?

I am going 54S, but not sure on the 60*.

And I don't need a flop from tight lies very often.

I ordered a 60s and a 54s the other day in steel grey.

I wish they made a 54k, then I would go 54k and 60m. That would be perfect

I just went to PGA SS and demo'd various SM6 lofts and grinds. I love the feel of these wedges. Wow! I am definitely going with the 54 S and still not sure about the 60*. It is not really possible to demo a wedge with that high of loft in a simulator.

The steel grey looks awesome! These will be finding their way into the bag soon.

I am thinking of getting a new 56* primarily for use out of bunkers or deeper rough where I want a little more mass and from the fairway from between 75 and 100 yards. Can anyone comment on the advantages / disadvantages of the 10* bounce with the S grind versus the 8* bounce with the M grind. Most of the courses I play have firm fairways and bunkers. Very seldom play course with soft fluffy sand bunkers.

Thanks!

K grind is money from soft sand.

Would you say the same for it with rough around greens?

I play the 60k in Chicago and Florida. It is fantastic out of the sand, full shots, and my favorite around the greens on firm or soft conditions. Also, I've never had an issue opening the face off a tight lie.

Thanks for the input. Appreciate it. 60K it may just be for me.

I compared the 60k and 60L during an outdoor fitting. I was able to fit flops off tight lies and thick rough with the K just as easy as the L grind. Since my home course is redoing the bunkers with fluffy white sand the K grind was the winner for me. The L was just as good for most shots but wanted to dig a little in the bunkers. I've been mostly surprised at the ease to open the face with the K and play all the shots as I was skeptical at first just reading about the high bounce. Relative to many other wedges 12* is still on the low side considering some manufacturers make wedges with bounces over 20*.
