Ads that state OBO, but don't really want to negotiate.

If you don't want to open negotiations, as OP is complaining about, don't state in your ad that you'll accept offers.

"What your best price" is a negotiation tactic to get you to state a price first. The buyer will then work off that.

If you don't like it OP, don't accept offers. Just state your firm price. Simple as that.

It's called Or Best Offer. What is the offer in "what's your best price"?

HAHA. This is great. I just posted this in another thread... and then noticed it was in direct response to the same member...

Buyers can ask any questions they want. However, I'm not going to negotiate against myself. Then I might as well just put my bottom line price in the ad.

OBO stands for "or best offer" which means... the buyer offers a price. OBO does not stand for, "I didnt want to put my lowest price in the ad, but if you ask me what I'm willing to sell it for I'll let you know if you PM me."

As I mentioned before. Buyer asks what my minimum price is. I answer with, "What is the maximum you are willing to pay?". It's the same counter productive line of reasoning.

Yes. But if you're on the selling end of the transaction, and you have the OBO option, you should never ignore a "what's your best price" inquiry. If you have an item listed for $100, but would really take $80, then tell them your best price is $90.

What's the worst case scenario for that?

Negotiate against yourself? What does that even mean? Why would anyone classify folks making buying/price inquiries as "awful people"?

Solid response back as the seller.

I'm just trying to get across that there is a reason buyers ask that. It's a negotiation tactic that does tend to work. It's very easy to counter "as you stated".

I don't understand why people get so upset by it. It's a ploy for leverage. Who cares? Just counter it, and move on. If you don't, it's your own fault.

I agree that you won't ever make a sale if you just shut the buyer down.

I would assume that OP was using hyperbole when he classified people as being "awful". (at least I hope...)

This next part isnt meant to be condescending. If you were just being sarcastic about not knowing what 'Negotiate against yourself' means you can skip the next few sentences. "Negotiate against yourself." is something I heard fairly often in car sales. In the BST when a seller has said OBO they also have a set price. That is the opening of the negotiation. If the Seller then quotes a second price without any pricing input from a buyer, the seller has negotiated against themselves. The Seller has gone from Price A to Price B without any input from the Buyer.

Why would I lower my price to $90 for no reason? Sounds completely idiotic to me.

What if the buyer's max price was $95 and me telling him $90 like a completely clueless buffoon cost me $5?
