How can they not penalize the kid earlier in the round today and then turn around and penalize DJ? He had ground his club and DJ had obviously not

Can you imagine any other sport where a penalty occurs early in the game, they let the competitors know it may have occurred, and then they call said penalty after the game is over?

I don't see how there can be a penalty. It looks pretty bad on the USGA. Two words come to mind - Mickey and Mouse. And I don't like Johnson.

I am of the opinion that the ruling was correct, but the rule itself is flawed and Johnson's decision to hit that shot shows a lack of integrity.

 

 

does one get a choice ? ( real question) i thought it was mandatory relief..as in if it made your lie worse you had to take that too

 

I believe that you are given a choice of determining when it is a TIO. You aren't going to be able to prove in a court of law what his intent was, but I think its fairly clear from his alignment and the result that he was aimed to hit the ball right over the tower, so it wasn't really a line of sight obstruction even though he claimed it was.

 

Not illegal, but uncouth (IMO).

 

It's line of sight, not line of flight. The same difference can work against a player...

I think they are upset at the winning score being under par. They are pissed. This is a way to get one back.

Sad to say that the USGA and their rules are far too confusing to the average viewer. If they actually change the ruling post-round it would be a major shocker. I didn't see anything that would cause a penalty to be assessed. Neither did the rules official. Case closed!

You are joking, right? He followed the rules. He followed the instructions of the official. How much more honest can he get?

 

If he hit it over the item that he needed line of sight relief from he didn't need relief from it.

that's why it's called line of sight and not line of flight.

Looking at it again , it looked like he had it grounded after his practice swing, then picked it up and moved in and never grounded it again. Did the grounding in his practice swing cause it to move?

Few thoughts watching the coverage.

• Titleist must be bummed that Spieth doesn't have any Titleist branding (UA clothes/shoes and AT&T bag)
  
• Spin rates on the drives have been higher than I expected (2200-2700). I don't remember seeing any drives under 2100
  
• No point in telling DJ that you're going to review it at the end of the round. Only tell him mid-round if you've made a final determination.
