Being an Aussie of similar age I'm gonna say we should give him a bit of slack. Allenby started on tour at a very young age, and would have experienced the tail end of the old school professional golf culture in Australia at that time. Back then it was quite normal for the players to head straight to the bar after a round and not leave til closing time, and then hit the town for more drinking. I know plenty of very talented players now working in pro shops who never made it past the pro am circuit (our version of the mini tours) due to excessive drinking during the 80s and early 90s.

Having met him a few times... he's definitely not a happy person. He's always short, and confrontational. I think a snotty ***** sums it up. I do feel bad for him though... he definitely has some demons he needs to figure out and despite his attitude... I really do hope he figures it out as its one hell of a downward path he's on... and we probably only know a very small amount of his struggles and troubles.

Allenby has earned $27 million in prize money over his professional golfing career, so I assume he has a little money left for travel and expenses...even after a divorce settlement 5-6 years ago. Word is - Allenby's fortune is all-but-gone and he is now playing for much needed money rather than fame....and not doing too well.

Dude has donated a lot of his time effort and money for his personal challenge charity for over 20 yrs to help kids with cancer. A few mid-life slip ups shouldn't define his career and contributions both on and off the course.

27 million from US tour alone add euro and aussie tours for 20 odd years and at least $100k per year from sponsors you would think 35 million at least and even with 1 divorce you'd hope he's still got plenty,

 

If you look at his stats last couple of years hitting it ok to well just putting poorly, just goes to show how much money is available and in essence many players are rewarded for mediocrity - his last 3 seasons he's had 1 top 10 but still made $900k that's just crazy. I doubt he will play web tour and is using career money this season so looks like this week may be his last.

I hate to tell you, negatives are way easier to remember than positives. A few slip ups? Allenby could write a book on his slip ups. Its well known on tour and off that his attitude is crap.

If it happened once... its a slip up. Twice within a fairly short time frame, is a trend. If I get hammered after telling my wife I wont drink... thats a slip up. If I get hammered, make a scene, end up in the drunk tank, thats no slip up.

I hope he can figure it out but usually people with that attitude and problems are their own worst enemies.
