Trilby Tour

Anyone seen this? might just be Europe.

Caught it the other night and after thinking it was a spoof it turns out its serious and some low handicap guys as well.

They wear ridiculous clothes, have a pink tour bag with caddies in 'Masters' overalls.

I thought some swings were deliberately doing it for fun..............only caught 20 mins but I cant believe people pay a fortune to play in this 'tour'

Fortune? According to their website the 2017 Trilby Tour is £285 (Trilby Twos £550 for the pair) so it's expensive but not outrageous. The outfits are provided by the tour and free to keep. A lot of people probably play it just for the experience and the chance to get on camera.

What does the entry fee cover?

To make sure you look you best as your efforts are captured on the big screen we will kit you out in the finest of the William Hunt Golf Range. This includes;

Entry into 1x Regional Championship

1x William Hunt Golf Top

1x William Hunt Golf Trousers

1x William Hunt Trilby Tour Belt

1x William Hunt Trilby Hat

1x Trilby Tour Golf Bag

1x Trilby Tour Caddy Boiler Suit

1x Trilby Tour Caddy Hat

All of these items included in your entry are worth over £550 and will be yours to keep after the tourament!

On the day breakfast will also be provided for both player and caddy.

One of my golf buddies (5 handicap) entered a couple of years ago. He thought it was a great experience. He reckons every competitor is treated like a pro for the day and the entrance fee more than covers the gear that is handed out. Sky TV covers it and it gets a fair bit of coverage. Great concept...wish I had £285 spare :-/.

For your money what you get is pretty decent. I have tried to watch the highlights package that they make for SkySports a few times...if you haven't done the same, don't bother.

Agreed Matty, I quite enjoyed it when Sky first showed it a few years back. However, the coverage seems to concentrate on William's "best mates" who play year after year or the odd D list retired footballer or cricketer. They only chance us normal Joes would get to be on TV is the rouges gallery section of crappy shots at the end.

Agreed. I can watch almost any golf, but I draw the line at this. How it gets an equal amount of coverage as the Challenge tour is beyond me.

A few guys at my club are into this big time ... one of them has won a Regional event and another actually won the whole thing a few years back.

They seem to like it.

No doubt targetted at reasonably affluent amateurs who want to experience a little bit of what it must be like being a Pro playing in a televised event. Hence it attracts alot of poseurs and the inevitable sandbaggers. Don't really see the appeal myself. The ageing cynic in me sees it as a vehicle for William Hunt to sell some clothes and massage his own ego, and for the Marriott Hotel chain to get more people to play their courses .. although that is probably a little unfair :)

There are certainly better options available for amateur tournament play at far better courses, albeit without the allure of your 15 minutes of fame on late night Sky TV ...

A few friends of mine played in it over the years. None do so anymore, mainly due to the fact that the guy who runs it is an arrogant, egomaniac idiot. If you don't wear the daft hat, you don't get to play.

Sky Sports Golf has lots of hours to fill so you do get some obscure stuff but I've never understood why they show this.

I sometimes enjoy watching the Challenge Tour, EuroPro Tour etc. but I can't watch the Trilby Tour. Not sure what it's doing on TV to be honest.

I've had some mates do this, and its no more than bucket list event.

Probably safe to say also for people with a bit of disposable cash to hand :)

I'd rather play a local competition at one of the bigger Open Venues.

Of course the golf gear is William Hunt’s take on Sean Connery in Goldfinger. For those that don’t know him William Hunt is a Saville Row tailor selling high end suits in UK.

The clubs actually pay to host the event as with the television coverage and the green fees it attracts it is very good value.

It is probably fun but I am not sure I could convince a friend to give up a day to caddy rather than play himself!!

Two years on from this thread beginning, my disdain for watching this when it pops up on the TV is even worse. In total agreement with you OldTom, pointless filler that they could put something else on. I'd rather watch live to tape reruns of last years US Open than watch this.

I'm struggling to understand the negativity towards this. It is what it is and doesn't pretend to be anything else.

It's a few amateur golfer doing what we all do, having fun playing golf. Are you all so pretentious that this innocuous and self depreciating concept is beneath you?

They wear stupid hats (trilby's) because that's the whole point. They play at "crummy" courses because St Andrew's wouldn't have them. It's on Sky as a counter to all the other stuff. If you want the Challenge Tour etc, watch them it, if you don't like this one, then thats what the remote is for.

People talk about golfing elitism being a barrier to furthering golf, It's alive and kicking here.
