My Champions Tour quest thread-update post 530

Right now I try to start my downswing by pointing the butt of the club to the sky.

You have to be careful with this. Most people can't do it without opening the face and dropping right shoulder and hands too much.

but its already pointing to the sky at the top of the swing?

Not unless you have John Daly's backswing and if it's in context of feel a more horizontal shaft, think about it.

ah ok, I get it now- might try that swing thought playing tomorrow on a tough links course in 41 degree windy temperature- cant wait....lol

Monte, what are most people doing trying to execute that thought that causes the face to open?

It just opens when you do that, unless your wrists and other things are sequencing properly.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

OK, I'm dense - even a stick figure pic would probably help me get this, lol.

.

That’s because your wrist angles at the top and transition are bad.

Lol...I guess what he is referring to is from the top of the swing he rotates his left palm down towards the ground which in turn makes the but of the club point up and the shaft lay down which makes the club more shallow. The opposite would be turning the palm of the left hand towards the sky which would steepen the shaft and make it more vertical. By shallowing the shaft at the start, it helps to force the body to rotate better as you no longer have to make compensations with your body/arms to shallow during the swing.....The issue though is that if your arms don't work properly, you could start sending the ball to right field.

If I am mistaken, please correct me.

I have no doubt, lol.

I'm not trying to physically get it (yet) just trying to visualize what you are doing or intending.

If you are looking down the line at the golfer.

The sky is 12 o’clock. Behind the golfer is 9, the ground 6 and the ball 430/5ish.

At the top of a left arm parallel swing, the butt of the club points at the ball.

Pulling the handle and making the shaft vertical, the butt would point to 530/6.

I’m am trying to point it to 1/2.

Aha! Occasionally watch Crossfield (more for entertainment than anything) but this seems to be an intent he demonstrates quite a bit for certain individuals when he talks about shallowing. Not saying its exactly the same, but I think it's pretty similar.

The left arm parallel position helped with the thought - since I'm just hanging out at home today, picked up an old Hogan 9 iron from a bag the corner and there we are.

Seems like an intent that gives result similar to different intents you have me working with!

Anyway, thanks for the clarification.

Do you also add the feeling of the handle pointing towards the target?

The cart girl at my club is a 300 pound man. I have no pictures. Just visualize a man, about 5’9, who is 300 pounds. He isn’t a body builder.

Much like an attractive woman, he provides a jolt to the system when seeing him drive up. The brain just doesn’t expect such a sight.

my very very uneducated thought is that would make very laid off at the top.

It’s not at the top, it a feel to start the downswing that prevents you from going beta too early. :-)

In English, making shaft too vertical in transition. Has nothing to do with laid off or across the line.

Would you say the intent/result is similar to the Gankas stick drill (placing a stick in the folds of the elbows at the top of the BS and trying to keep the stick from dropping during transition)

Gankas also refers to the shallowing move as a pushing the butt of the club away from you, away from the target in transition. This creates width and shallows the club. That, I think, is the 1 or 2 o'clock that Monte is talking about.

ok, so to me this sounds very opo of what Malaska talks about on his videos where he basically talks about standing the club up on the way down. you are basically "feeling" that you are flattening out.

OK, so I experimented with this feel over the weekend, I can see how many people leave the face wide open when trying to execute this feel as Monte stated. I loved it though! It forced me to have to really rotate hard to square up the face as well as speed up the arms. The gain in club head speed was very noticable for the first time, without feeling like I was pulling the handle.

For those still struggling to see 1:00 in your mind's eye, 1:00 is looking at a clock behind you.

I also noticed it was much easier for me since I have always been "cupped" at the top of the swing. With a flat left wrist, it's harder to feel

So much confusion over a feel to flatten the shaft on the downswing.

The funny, twisted part of my brain wants to give this feel to a junior golfer and leave them for a month. I can see them perfectly positioned at the top, then first move down, butt end actually pointing at the sky. I kind of want to see it, because somehow they’d compensate and hit a decent shot, and I want to see what that looks like.

Good luck!

Edit:

I see some names I recognize besides Monte. Location is interesting. "Niptown" - where it's always a little chilly and you can see the girls coming a block away (would love to run their Chamber of Commerce for a day)!

Guys in his group will be psyched out by the DF putter, so that knocks a couple out of the running right there. Odds just getting better.
