Their life story, how hard they work to stay on tour, so mostly the underdogs, Johnny Vegas and James Hahn are personal friends so I'll always pull for them...

Their play. We don't know any of these people. Guys I know that know PGA and LPGA players tell me what you see on TV is often not how they are, good and bad. A lot of them are names everyone knows.

Criteria for me:

(1) Don't fit the conventional mold ie: (white, 6'2", Southern California, Country Club, dad's a PGA Pro or a Dr. or a Pilot, AJGA star who traveled like a tour pro every summer, at 12 got a handwritten letter from Palmer/Nicklaus/Hogan etc.)

(2) Has a little legit edge, NOT a made for TV persona, but something that reflects ownership of a "brass set".

(3) Bomb it

My favorites: VIJAY, Lucas Glover, Anthony Kim, Lee Trevino, Thongchai Jaidee, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Rory, Tony Finau, Johnny Vegas, Harold Varner III

Hard for me to answer because for me because there is not 1 trait that defines it.

DJ just seems so dumb and aloof at times but his pure talent, power and speed of play is refreshing to see

Ken Duke My wife works for one of his sponsors and he is incredibly nice to both of us every year when we see him WM Open week.

I tend to root for players from the Seattle area, or somehow connected here. For a long time that meant Couples; now it's Ryan Moore.

I sometimes root for Speith because his caddie is from this area and he won the US Open when it was in Tacoma in 2015.

I also root for Mickelson for no particular reason, other than he's fun to watch.

Several different reasons I pull for my "favorite" players:

  • Tiger- He dominated in a way I've never seen and likely never will. He was simply awe-inspiring and must-see TV in his prime.
  • Zach Johnson- Met him at his old home course (Heathrow in Orlando) the winter before he won the Masters. My college team was down there for a week playing and he was incredibly nice to me and had no issue letting some 21-year old D3 player ask him questions. Just a genuine guy that I love seeing succeed
  • JB Holmes- Fellow Kentucky boy who graduated HS/College the same year as me. Crossed paths with him in several tourneys across the state when we were amateurs (never got close to beating him). He's quiet but, by all accounts, a very good guy who loves his UK Wildcats (as do I). Also, Team USA is undefeated in any team events he's been on, so there's that too.
  • Kenny Perry- Same as Zach. His sister and daughter planned my wedding (my wife is from his tiny hometown) and Kenny was the definition of a gentleman each time I crossed his path. My parents have since gotten to know he and his wife a bit and they will swear the same thing about Kenny and his bride.
  • David Duval- Not sure what drew me to him, but I loved his swing/attitude/fearlessness on the course and love how insightful, yet respectful, he is as an announcer.
  • Justin Thomas/Jordan/Ricky/Smylie- These guys seem like awesome guys who kick=a** at the game but haven't forgotten how to enjoy life. Hard to not like these guys and would be my pick to grill out and have a few beers with.
  • Dustin Johnson- Amazing to watch him hit the ball and he seems to have overcome a lot to find peace/happiness off the course. Hope that continues.
  • Rory- How can you not love that swing? Seems to know what he wants out of the game and isn't afraid to answer a question honestly as opposed to what the media wants to hear. Have to respect that.
  • Feherty- I find the guy hilarious. That's enough for me.

I started following Jason Day back when he was relatively new to the Tour because I read some article somewhere that he was this hard-scrabble mixed kid who grew up poor and went on to dominate, and still (at the time) drove from event to event in an RV with his wife. That story line caught me hook, line and sinker, and I've been a fan ever since. I was thrilled to see him ascend to #1, and hope he holds on to it. Yes, I'm bothered by the fact that he's a slow player, but I can look past that. I'm always cheering for the guy, and would love to play a round with him. He actually came to an event at one of my local courses and I didn't find out about it until the weekend AFTER the event took place. Still ticked about that!

I was (and still am) a Tiger fan as well, but I'm not sure that I'd want to hang out around him.

Trying to think who I actually, really "cheer" for. Besides TW that is, and that ain't happening any time soon if ever again.

I will generally cheer for anyone who is putting on a great performance, whoever they may be.

But, as far as really wanting certain players to do well right from the get go,

let me think, It's pretty random, not sure why, but I root for

JB Holmes

Sergio

Think that's it. Used to cheer for Ernie. oh, and Harrington. I'd be like, "C'mon Paddy Molloy!!!!!" (not sure why I called him that).

FIERY GUYS! I'm that way and I love seeing other guys play that way. Watching TIGER growing up I'm sure is why. Gotta have excitement. Favorite player by a mile is TW, that's no secret. Like watching guys like Reed too. Always pull for Zach Johnson since I'm from Iowa haha.

This^^^

I remember watching Rory and Reed at the Ryder cup and thinking "Where the f*** have you guys been?" It wasn't because of all the birdies they drained on the front nine, it was the passion and fire that burst out from within. This is why I liked Tiger so much. He played with such intensity and fire ever single round, every single tournament.

A player who plays with passion but yet is respectful to the game and his fans. One who doesn't exalt himself too high and remains a down-to-earth type of guy. Tiger had half the recipe but didn't warm up to the fans, so he is out. Phil is a good example of why people root for him so much.

Fellow countrymen of course

Swing favourites, like Couples and Rory.

Guys that seem to be nice persons, anti-a*******, anti-montys.

Guys with some fire. I love Siem's attitude.

Sören Kjeldsen. Guy even speaks a Danish I can understand.

I like Marcel Seim for the man-bun. I could never pull that off...plus having minimal hair makes it difficult.
