And I must say, its a good thing you explained that your "Are these people really who we want associated with our game?" mantra isn't elitist, because that would be a really easy mistake to make for anyone listening to you.

Where's the secret footage from day 1's beers you claimed to have seen? I had some buddies there the entire day that dispute your claim.

 

Anyways I think the beers being tossed when a hole in one happens is AWESOME. Should it happen at every tournament of course not. But once or twice a year is not a bad thing. It's quite simple not to watch it if it bothers you so much. And most of the fans in 16 are pretty smart golf fans so I don't think we have to worry about the beer tossing expanding to bad shots, etc...

 

Everyone of my golfing buddies each year talk about how they would like to post up at 16 for the day. There is not one other tournament all my friends would want to go to, including the Masters.

OMG, though I have no doubt some folks would rather spend a day at 16 in Phoenix than spending a day at The Masters (and I believe that subset is limited to precisely those folks) it still astounds me.

 

But fans at 16 generally "smart" golf fans - that's a bit of a reach.

Don't get me wrong most of my golfing friends would rather be at Augusta for the Masters. However I do have some that have no interest in going there. I don't have any golfing friends that wouldn't love to spend a day on 16.

 

And I don't know to many other tournaments where the fans know the alma matter, home town, favorite sports team, etc of every player that week.

I love 16, one the marquees of pre-masters every year. The booing and yelling is terrific. If anything, the fans have seemed to be a little more tame than usual.

It's funny the only time I read of people claiming they hate 16 its online. Every golfer I've asked about 16 afk say they love it. And I tend to agree with the latter. We complain about the golf industry dying, when it's that very elitist attitude that is killing the game. I say spread the love, and have fun I think Waste Management has a great thing going with this tournament. Keep it light and fun! I love anything that spreads the sport I love! I think if there is a hole in one they should do beer showers! [media=]

Agreed.. but everything that's good about 16 is what becomes a nightmare on 17. The amount of idiots yelling in players backswings on 17 is ridiculous. On 16 the players can't hear it because the constant noise.. 17 is quiet then baba boey yelling during their swings.. that's hard to deal with

The 17th tee is not quiet. Not by a long shot. Players are just as aware of noise there as they are on 16.

What impresses me most is how much money the T-birds give to local charities. 9.3 million last year, and looking at over 10 million this year... No other tourney helps the disadvantaged as much as the Phoenix Open... Luv the tourney, Luv that they give back more than any other tourney on the tour. Been attending since 1991 when four bleachers were set up on the tee box on 16.
