I thought I had read a while ago that he considers himself a husband and father first (has 3 kids I believe). And he struggled with his swing but isn't exactly as dedicated as he once was. His personal life is hectic and that's what is important to him.

I watched him actually mis-hit some balls today.

Not a hook or a double cross etc but just not solid, come up way short and flared out.

His swing is just off kilter and he looks like he has no confidence.

Hopefully he sorts his game out because a bad swing with no confidence combined with his chipping yips is a recipe for disaster...

yea that seems to be his miss, flare wipe to the right. I saw him last year and he wiped a few right. I don't think that miss is a good combo to be going to Chris O Connel

I hear ya.

I mean he's not doing it all the time but its such an ugly miss it just sticks out like a sore thumb.

High, short, right and the sound is just immediately bad.

I feel for the dude. He's fallen hard with his ball striking and his short game was never good enough to keep him around IMO.

I love that he is dedicated father but you can still practice 6-7 hours a day play like what 20 weeks a year and be a good father at the same time..lame excuse.

It's not a lame excuse if your head isn't in it when you're away from your kids. I would understand anyone who says it takes a toll being away from their family as much as some of these guys are. It takes dedication to be a PGA tour pro for sure, but same can be said for being a real father who is there for his kids. Not everyone can balance it the same way.

IMO Hunter Mahan had a good enough game to win on TOUR, but never enough to be a world beater or perennial major contender...Then he wins a few times , banks probably enough to keep his family comfortable for some time, then wonders why he can't flip a switch and turn on the old magic..He had his time in the sun, and might show up on a leaderboard on a course that fits his eye and game..Just like in real life, some people can't re invent themselves once they reach their goals..just a guess

Hunter working with Chris O'Connell is a bad mistake in my opinion. I've seen many elite college, Nationwide/Web.com, LPGA and PGA players give Chris O'Connell at try here in Dallas (actually Plano, TX and now Allen, TX), and the only one that really seems to click with Chris' swing methodology is Matt Kuchar.

its amazing that one of the most drooled over swings in golf wanted to be more like Kuchar. Not hating on Kuch but it's a unique swing.

Played with Hunter in a Pro-am a couple weeks ago. He striped the ball all day long. He was a really cool, down to earth dude. With how well he played that day, it's hard to believe he is ranked 700+ in the world.

Yep, ive seen him play outside of tourney golf, and he does hit it like a god. Maybe the tour is too much pressure for him.

Hunter has a pretty left and low exit, hardy O'Connell advocate similar moves, also the flatter swing which hunter has. I think that's why he went to him.

Seeing Hunter's swing yesterday on TV. Definitely looks further left and lower. Almost awkward looking. Hope he keeps it going.

It's pretty unlikely we see this guy compete again. The calibre of golf it take to win on tour means someone who's got the chipping gremlins will rarely make a cut. Witnessed the Ryder Cup in 2010 first hand and it was truly brutal what he was attempting to do with a wedge. Like someone trying to undertake surgery with a whisk.

So maybe he saw a similar trait and thought he could help? I guess that makes sense.

Good guy and hate to see him slide like he has. But I have heard that he is more dedicated to being a father/husband than a pro golfer. Good for him, as long as he is happy.

Sounds like an easy out for him. If his game was firing on all cylinders, I am sure he would be working even harder chasing major titles.

come on, no good stories or any small talk of what he might be working on? 4+ hours with a pro has to be pretty cool.
