They were almost 2 holes behind before this even happened. So no real issue with getting the drop right but to take all that extra time is unfair to the rest of the field who play with respect for competitors by keeping up the pace.

Agreed, watching somebody recover and still win after poor drives is terrible. I want to see straight drives and a wedge every single hole.

I'm not that familiar with golf rules since I only play casual beer rounds. I'm a little shocked that its only a 1 stroke penalty to take line of site relief like that. What are the limits to this rule? Does a rule official have to agree with you that it is unplayable or is it solely the players call? I can't remember how many times I've seen guys hacking it out of terrible knee high rough but if you trek far enough beck there must be a fairway or at least a patch of hardpan or something to hit off. It seems like this escape is way underutilized if all it costs is a stroke. Seems like a dumb rule that should cost you more strokes.

 

That being said, I don't blame Spieth at all for this tactic. Its not his job to make or enforce rules. His job is to win. There are multiple tourney officials all around whose job it is to enforce fair play. There is absolutely nothing to feel guilty about. There is no moral or ethical violation what so ever. I actually admire the guts to keep your cool in that situation and think your way out of a bind.
