New SM7's

Leonard Washington

Recommended Posts

I bough sm6s earlier this year. If they come out with raw I'll buy new ones, if not I'll just keep the ones I have. I think playing 25-30 rounds a year I can keep wedges 2-3 years without issue.

That's all you get to play?! I feel bad for you man.

Demanding career, I really have to prioritize golf to even play that much!

25-30 rounds would be fantastic for me lately. I'm lucky to get 20 rounds in a year! Thank God for the driving range on the way home from work.

I have a 58-12 D grind. I’m coming from a 58-12 K grind, I really like the D grind. I’m a digger so the K always helped me. I like the versatility of the D grind.

You could buy a 58-12 D and bend it two degrees strong so that it fits in the space at 56-10 with the D grind.

I bought a 52-08 F grind and bent it two weak so that it’s 54-10. I don’t like it as much as my old SM5 54-14 F grind. I’m looking for a 56-14 F grind that I’m going to bend two degrees strong so that it plays 54-12. I need a little more bounce than 10 degrees.

I heard that Bob Vokey once said, “The sole is the devil and the bounce is religion and everyone needs more religion in their life!”

Amen!

So why didn‘t you get the stock SM7 54-14 F ? Didn‘t you like you SM5 54-14 ?

I felt like the 54-14 had to much bounce from the fairway. Like it a lot from the bunkers and rough but not so much from the short grass.

I’ve been practicing with the 54-10 that was mentioned above. I like it from the fairway a lot and am learning to hit it from the bunkers. Time will tell. But as a true WRX’er, I don’t have much patience so may swap for that 56-14 bent to 54-12.

Ive been playing the SM7 52 jet blacked (stripped raw) with DG 120 S400 shaft the last 3 months. Good club. Yesterday I took my new SM7 RAW 52 with standard DG S400 and IN MY OPINION the raw version felt much better. More solid and less clicky.
I think I'm going back to a 54 & 60 instead of my 3 wedge set up (52,56 & 60) already got the 56 sold and the mood people I see with real raw they all say they feel better looks like I might go that way as well!! Thought about a 54 V grind don't know if I would gain anything with that though

I love my wedges but can't seem to get a good feel from my 58D out of the sand. Love it everywhere else but it might be too much bounce out of the sand and i feel it does not dig in at all. Been playing a lot of different sand conditions and the same result. Can't be the Indian so might look at the the M or the Vokey low bounce K.

Question for all of you that are doing the raw finish to your wedges... Is there a way to raw the wedge, and then re-seal the wedge (excluding the face) to help prevent rusting?

Love the look of the raw, non shiny finish, just not a fan of the rust.. (A bit of rust on the face wouldn't be too bad)

I’ve had success with a bit of oil. I use the lubricating oil for my wahl shaver. I did this on my RTX3 tour raw after I removed the finish they had on there. I just spread and rubbed in with my finger then lightly wiped any excess away. Seems to help with any excessive rust. Before I did this they would rust pretty hard just from the 15 seconds they were wet while cleaning them.

I’m sure there is a better way but this is just what I had on hand

SM7 raw takes kindly to a light rub with a scotch brute pad or 000 steel wool pad. Very lightly. Seems to remove surface scratches too so I’m sure any surface rust can easily be wiped away with minimal effort if it does happen. A lightly oiled rag after the round should be more than enough to keep them looking good. I also like the raw look better than the rusted look.

I know that Remington Gun Oil "Rem Oil" (or Hoppes or others I guess...don't know guns) worked well on older Vokey wedges that got small rust spots after downpours. They just vanished. REm Oil claims to into the metal pores to remove moisture and protect for the future.

Probably overkill, but once in a blue moon I'll use it on my Miuras or any worn wedges if they are going to be unused for a long time or when flying. On longer stays in Maui with the very humid salty air I've bought a small can of WD 40 and used it a couple of times. (Bringing Rem OIl on a plane would appear to be be a TSA no-no.) Of course I clean any residue off the faces before play.

I have three SM7’s now.

60 D 12

56 S 10

52 F 8

They are not really meant as full swing clubs, I bought them for bunker/chipping/pitching clubs and all three are working out well so far although it’s early days. The S-grind 56 is my favorite all-rounder and is the perfect bunker club, especially when the sand is damp and-or inconsistent.

But I do occasionally use them for full swings. The 66 and 60 are about like I’d expect but I can’t get any distance at all out roof the 52. It is weird! I hit the 56 around 78 or 79 yards stock full swing (it is bent to 57 BTW). The 60 goes maybe 70. My 50-degree Ping G gap wedge is 98 yards.

But darned if I can hit that 52 more than 80 yards. It basically goes the same as the 56 and at impact it feels like it is digging a trench...except it hardly makes a divot at all. That sense of having hit it fat but getting no divot is the strangest part.

Guess the 8-degree F grind just generates too much drag for me somehow. It is a brilliant club for fiddly little chip shots out of the rough that I want to bump once into the fringe and have it hop onto the green and trickle to the hole. So I don’t want to take it out of the bag. But dang that leaves a big gap from 80-98 yards.

For the moment I am keeping my 54-degree Ping G sand wedge in the bag solely for 85-90 yard full swing shots.

Has anyone ordered the wedge works raw wedges through a golf shop/pro shop or can you only order through the wedge works website?

I ordered mine from 2nd Swing, so I’m assuming you can.

The M grind in the 60 is so fricken good it's hard to believe this many good / different shots with it.

That's exactly how I feel about the D grind - it's transformed my short game. I can hit virtually every shot with it.

Raw Vokeys which had the black finish do not or almost don‘t rust. They are NOT raw after you have removed the black finish.

I discussed the Jet Black finish with AD at the FedEx St. Jude Classic last week and he said the Jet Black process has been modified slightly... this could explain why the stripped SM7's are seeing some slight rusting. Albeit not as consistent as a true raw which we already knew! My SM7's are seeing some slight "patina" after just a few months. My stripped SM6's, now 2 1/2 years old, have ZERO signs of rust. ***sorry for the sideways photos... I can't get the editor to lead them correctly :|

I stripped my SM6s and I couldn't get them to rust no matter what I did. That has not been the case with my 7s.

But at the end of the day its metal. It's all raw at some stage. The blacks are a raw metal, then powder coated. The chrome are raw, then chrome plated. Again its metal at some point in the process it is all raw. It may be a different type of metal, also different climate conditoins/are as of primary play, will lead to degrees of rusting on metal. You can also speed or slow rusting (not completely stop but slow).

To say tho that the stripped version is not a raw form of metal is wrong, and stating they will never rust like the true raw is wrong. I can make my 7s rust a lot more than I have. I just like the way mine look so I have slowed the process a bit. They still continue to rust tho.

Yes, I agree with you. They might get rusty spots.

But I still stand to my point that once you strip the black finish you are not down to the raw steel. They will not rust as the original Oil Can did, which we all miss so much!

The black finish is no powder-coating. Powder-coating is a totally different animal.

It's a chemical finish such as QPQ, etc.
