Total Driving, Ballstriking, and Scrambling

Recommended Posts

The LPGA doesn't publish total driving stats (distance rank + % hit rank), or ballstriking stats (total driving rank + GIR % rank). It's been a slow day here, so I decided to screen scrape the data, and generate the rankings. Here's the total driving rankings. No real surprises. You can really see the players who struggle with their putters, e.g. Stacy, Jodi, Annie, and Gerina.

Ballstriking. 'Doesn't shock me to see So Yeon at the top. Again, the poor putters stand out, i.e. few recent wins despite good ballstriking.

Thank you Argonne, these are both very interesting stats. LPGA could very easily tabulate and display them, it would take literally a few keystrokes, and yet they don't. They talk all day about wanting to get people more into their product, and yet their continuing disregard for basic skill-ranking stats strongly suggests they're not that serious about it. I understand if they can't do Shotlink and strokes-gained and whatever but to compile driving, ballstriking and all-around rankings is so freakin easy. I'm sure eventually it'll get addressed but for now it remains one of the LPGA's biggest, most shameful shortcomings.

Heck, I'd be happy if they simply added a 'download .csv' button on the stats page.

Na Yeon Choi near the bottom of the list in both categories. Something more than injury me thinks. Nasa is near the bottom in both also. 'Not a rookie season to remember. Others big names dwelling near the bottom include Morgan, Belen, and Beatriz.

I calculated the ballstriking stats for 2017. I was not surprised that So Yeon remained #1 at the end of the season. Again, it's easy to see the poor putters, as they rank high in ballstriking, and yet have few wins.

I read somewhere that it takes $500k a week to deploy Shotlink. That's more than one third of the total purse for most LPGA event. Assuming there's a markup for the men, even half of that amount is not viable for the girls.

Or we can start a go fund me page to help out.

A cheaper option would be to deploy it on a few holes. Driving average is calculated using only two holes. I'm assuming there might be some value in having a reduced data set.

Stacy Lewis penned a letter to the attendees of the economic conference in Davos. While she was specifically addressing the gender gap in prize money on the LPGA vs the PGA, it is interesting to note some of the statistics she cited: LPGA players hit 86% of the fairways off the tee, men 85%. The tournament scoring average for the women's champion was 69.11, only .9 strokes higher than the men's side.

The point being these ladies can play and they are excellent ball strikers.

Others big names dwelling near the bottom include Morgan, Belen, and Beatriz.

I hate to say it but Belen is basically a Paige Spiranac, but hotter. Sorry, but truth hurts.

I think Mozo is much better looking. Secondly, she has earned and secured her card on both tours for several seasons. Spiranic isn't remotely close to Mozo as a player.

I agree on the looks and yes Belen is obviously a better golfer. She is well known for her looks, not so much her game. 0 wins and a whopping 5 top ten finishes in 7yrs/142 events.

The LPGA players are excellent, but if they want a shot at the big purses they can play with the men if they want.... let's get rid of the gender divide.

I'm fairly certain this isn't an official stat, but I calculated the 2017 "Scoring" stat by adding the ballstriking ranking and Putts per GIR ranking. Basically, drive the ball far and straight, hit greens, and make the putts.

It's interesting that Stacy is on top, but struggles to win lately. 'Great ball striker. Very good putter. Yet, few recent wins. One could say the same thing about Moriya and Alex I guess. It seems the one thing that pure stats can't capture is mental toughness. Winners tend to get out of their own way when necessary.

One could say the same thing about Moriya and Alex I guess. It seems the one thing that pure stats can't capture is mental toughness. Winners tend to get out of their own way when necessary.

One could add In Gee to that list. Apart from good average stats players need variance. If a player led the season average scoring, and shot their average score every round, they wouldn't win a tournament. They need to get hot occasionally, and hold their nerve when they do. IK Kim has relatively poor season stats, but had 3 excellent tournaments.

Some of those stats surprised me - such as how far down Haru Nomura was. She seemed to be "about" every week, even though not necessarily challenging. She barely missed a cut.

Some players seem to fade on Sunday, while others tend to get unlucky when another player gets hot. In Gee seems to be in the latter category. She had some very good rounds on Sunday last season while in the hunt, while losing to a player with a hot putter.

The cast of Hamilton makes about $100K/year for the "stars."

In our Church production of WIcked, Mrs. Pelz mother, who didn't even need to audition for the role, will make nothing.

Is that fair Ms. Lewis?

No. It is completely unfair. The wretched cast members of Hamilton will have to pay estimated taxes and those estimates are never enough. A form of purgatory. Your esteemed Mother In Law however will be assured eternal bliss for her effort. If you still feel that she is suffering from some form of economic inequity you could try to get wardrobe to allow her to wear a sponsored cap or stitch some logos on her costume.

Bingo. All about the eyeballs.

You rang?

Anyway, until the LPGA comes up with as marketable a product as the men's tour, that is what drives purses, same as any other sport. It's the reason the NFL players get more than the NFL Europe players.

There is nothing stopping them (the LPGA) playing on the men's tours (or attempting to) but I suggest Miss Lewis would be a lot worse off than she is on the LPGA.

Rather than bleating about inequality, she'd be better off making the LPGA a bigger financial success.

Those stats though have absolutely nothing to do with pay. Eyeballs matter.

I watched the event at Wilshire CC over the weekend and really enjoyed it. The PGA event was boring.

I hope that the LPGA gets to play more fantastic older courses.

Unseen, in the background, Fate was quietly slipping the lead into the boxing-glove.  P.G. Wodehouse
