Looking at a couple SUVs. Audi Q5, Volvo XC60. Open to others. Test drove a VW Tiguan, which is a "lower tier" until you start adding all the stuff on it that you get on those other cars, then it starts getting comparable in price. Test drove the Tiguan, since I figure I trust the other two cars to drive alright and have enough HP. It's alright if you are going on the base model, but if you are dumping 38k in to the top of the line one, the engine is then pretty wimpy compared to other cars at that price.

Just as an example, I'm trying to figure out which cars have blind spot detection lights on the side mirrors. That's not a must-have feature, but I like it. I gather than Volvo has it by default, the Q5 has it in their one-up trim, and Tiguan has it in their one-up trim. But it was a pain in the butt to figure that out from their websites.

I think what's bugging me is that they give a list of features for each trim individually, but no one does some kind of table/matrix that shows their trims side-by-side. We sat with the Audi dealer for 30 minutes asking which features become available at what trim level. Waste of time.

Resale value should be a heavy consideration IMO...some midsize SUVs do great...others are awful.

Buy the ones that are awful just barely preowned! Like one year of service and 8k miles or something coming off a lease. By the time you put 100k miles on a 40k car whether it's worth 9k or 12k eh it is what it is

My buddy bought the XC90. The extra row is overkill. The vehicle is superb. The XC60 should be legit.

I think I'd pick the Volvo over the Audi. Only "problem" with the XC60 is that the new 2018 body style is much nicer than the 2017, but I don't want to spend new car money. For stuff like the Q5 or XC60, I'm looking at 2017 to get it in my price range. I'm contemplating waiting until 2019s hit the market so I can pick up a used 2018.

Played at Andrews AFB on Friday, and did not let Tex know. Well, only because it was charity tournament. We shot -8 and missed placing by a shot. Def left shots out there, but being a scramble, the winning score was like -16 or something. We played the South course which was in good shape despite all the rain. Greens running nicely, IMO, and an interesting layout.

I definitely didn't have it yesterday, but was able to claw some good shots together. Hit some decent drives, which are my bread and butter, decent irons, but short game and putting was pretty crap. Chief is just pounding the driver this season and is solid on/around the greens, just needs the irons to come together it seems.

Also the beer was flowing freely, which is always an added benefit.

Which I why I used the Ebay 20% off to invest in a M4 this week.

I was just looking at the US Open pics from yesterday in the Tour and Pre-Release section... oof. The fairways look decently generous, but as soon as you miss it's hack-out territory.

Tiger better hit 2 iron on every non par 3.

I think on one of the pods they were saying some fairways were 40-50 yards wide, average was 40? Kind of has an Erin Hills look to me. Which I absolutely loved so I cant wait to see it on tv.

Still kills me how many of these pros though are using the exact same training aids and gadgets that we do before the tournament starts. And some of the stuff I've never even heard of.

I don't see you guys talk much about these courses much so I'll give a quick review:

Pilgrim's Oak (Peach Bottom, PA)

This course is about 45 mins north of Baltimore. It's tucked among acres of farm land in the middle of Amish country PA. The club house is pretty simple and they don't serve alcohol. They have a grass range and a few putting/chipping greens. The course is in real good shape. The routing is well done and no two holes feel alike. There's a decent amount of elevation change and a good mix of wide open and guarded holes. The only downside is some of the greens are borderline unfair. Huge undulations and tiers that look like cliffs. I highly recommend this course. It's a pretty good halfway point for my Philly friend and I to meet up.

Rattlewood (Mt Airy, MD)

The forgotten MoCo course. I would have never known this area is actually Montgomery County until recently. The conditions are up there with what you'd expect with the other MoCo courses, greens rolled true, bunkers freshly raked with nice sand, fairways and rough grown in well. Pretty easy set up, only a few tight holes. It seems they ran out of space on 15-18 however. 18 has to be one of the most boring, easy closing holes I've ever seen.

I play Pilgrims Oak at least a few times a year, great course and usually in great shape another good course is Tanglewood which is about 5 min. north of Pilgrims.

Funniest bits from this weekend. . .

Friday. . .we've got me, Domes, MeatDom, MeatMark at Worthington. We played Wolf. It's such a fun game. We're still working it out, but it's a much better game when playing with carryover. Double or triple points on "lone wolf" holes. And, we were considering the idea of Rusty that on par 3's you have to pick blind before the shots are hit. I think that makes a lot of sense. Way too big of an advantage for wolf on those holes.

ANYWAY. . .we're all walking at Worthington and after hitting tee shots on the par 3 8th, we leave our bags near the tee, grab putters and drivers, finish hole 8 and then go play hole 9. Well, MeatMark left his glove with his bag, so he takes a rip on the 9th tee and his driver goes flying out of his hand forward and left. Well, if you don't know, that drive is a forced carry over junk with a little bridge to the left. Domes immediately goes, "Sit!!" like he hit a wedge that was going deep. The club went twirling through the air, roughly 35 yards, lands on the bridge going over the junk bounces up in the air and comes to rest right there on the bridge. It was one-in-a-million. This is me and Domes in the distance on the bridge grabbing the club.

Dom started out with 3 bogeys, but birdied 4, 5, 9 coming in, then birdied 13 after putting his second in the left bunker. I birdied 9 and then the par 3 15th when MeatMark was getting a stroke and hit one to about 15 feet. Course was, astoundingly, very dry. 20+ yards of roll on some holes. I haven't played a round at Turf since last September where I wasn't getting negative roll.

Second funny thing. . .we played Waverly Saturday morning before heading to Turf. I'm putting my things back in my car when Domes starts going, "oh, hey, I need your help here." And he's carrying his bag and kind of fiddling around with it on his hip. What had happened was the bag has a zipper that has a tiny little gap where the pull tab is; I think this zipper has a gap there. If not, picture one. . .

So, one of the zippers on the golf bag has slipped right over one of his belt loops and domes is standing there attached to his golf bag and he can't get it undone. He said the same thing happened to him once before and he was so stuck he had to rip his belt loop off. It was kind of a "you had to be there" to see Domes walking around stuck to his bag, but it was funny.

Sat morn was me, PQ, Domes and Go_Time at Waverly. We played Wolf again with carry-over. Domes shot 77, getting 8 or 9 strokes and ended up getting whipped. He did not have "partner luck" this weekend in either round.

First time playing with Go_Time. Good guy. Good golfer. Can move the rock out there. He smashed a huge draw on 2 and had about 215 in from blue tees, I think. We get to 13, the long par 3. We've got about 190 to a front pin, and I hit a really nice 4 iron that lands just over the pin and rolls out to the middle of the green. PQ and Domes hit some not great shots, so I'm primed to go lone wolf, then Go_Time smashes a big high one right at the pin. You can't actually see his ball, but I pick him because it has to be close. He's like 10 feet. Beautiful shot.

"What did you hit there?"

"7 iron".

Yeesh. I think even PQ hit 6 there.

I'm really starting to think that playing at Turf has been good for the game. The conditions there have been so tough all year and the one course is so stressful. Rough has been super long, but also thick and wet and the ball has just been sitting down. I had shots from the rough all weekend that were like the ball being teed up. Workable lies around the green. Makes such a big difference.

@ Sully, my fiancee has a CX-5 and loves it. The interior on that thing is WAY nicer than the asking price. The GT model gets you upgraded lights, nav, and slightly nicer wheels. Kinda worth it- if you drive low mileage you might be able to get a killer lease deal so you don't feel obligated to keep it. It might feel a little underpowered when loaded up but it's fun to drive.

Rough has been super long, but also thick and wet and the ball has just been sitting down.

I hope MV was finally able to mow their rough last week. I posted a pic on the gram from last Tuesday, it was unplayable in spots. Legitimately 6+" to the point where it was falling over on itself. Just was so wet that they could not get mowers out.

Have my half day lesson next Tuesday, really hoping to get out at least a couple more times this week. Flaws and all my game is exactly where I wanted it to be before the lesson. Last thing I wanted to do was go in cold which is what I worried about during the 6 weeks of rain.

Weather this week looks absolutely perfect too.

Yeah, DC. . .I just looked at that pic.

Our rough has "gone to seed" in some places. It's almost like it's thin enough to let the ball drop, but thick enough you can't get a club through it.

Interesting read for rule guys and all golfers

https://www.yahoo.co...-213840962.html

Classic.

Jimmie Walker says, "Glad we have rules guys like you around. Do you have the call in hotline number? What is it? Golf is hard dude. Try it out."

Then the guy says, "I did try it. I played European and Australian tour for 20 years. I well know it’s hard."

Jimmie Walker is being very dumb there.

JW comes off like a buffoon here. Aaron Oberholser and whoever else was on TGC this weekend were both absolutely trashing JW. Not only his comments but also the backstopping in general. AO was saying that regardless of pace of play - the argument usually being that you dont want to slow down guys by marking your ball - you absolutely must be protecting the field.

Not sure if anything will come from this though. AO did mention a bunch of times that JW was breaking the code of silence here and probably would be taking a lot of heat from guys in the locker room.

Looks like Adam Scott fired his caddie and will be using a local caddie this week.
