The Championship course at the University of New Mexico.

Totally agree. Very long and fast greens. Great course and my favorite university course.

In the Triangle I've enjoyed UNC Finley every time I've played there. Not such a fan of NC State's Lonnie Poole. Every hole seems uphill and I recall being in the bunkers quite often (that is really not a fault of the course!). Have yet to play Duke.

Β

In Northern NY I always liked playing St. Lawrence University's Appleton Golf Course. Fair prices, a great layout, and it's always in good condition. Also has a Best Western Hotel on site for a stay-n-play experience!

I checked out Appleton last night!! Looks very nice! I spend quite a bit of time in Upstate NY and have been known to venture up near Watertown and Black Lake. Safe to say I've put Appleton on my must play list....

You guys make me want to create a bucket list of university courses. I've been up to the Madison area several times in the last year but none during the time that it was good enough weather for golf. I'm thinking of taking a special trip.

Β

By the way, I've only played the UGA course (my alma mater) and the course formerly known as the Ga Tech Club (now known as Echelon). Love them both although they are both difficult from the back tees.

Being a recent Penn State Alum I can say the Blue and the White are solid tracks. I've gotten well over a hundred on the White where Willie Park Jr. designed half the holes years ago. The Blue is the better of the two however, its longer, has water hazards, and tests more aspects of your game. Neither is in my top 10 but I do recommend if you're in State College and don't want to pay the premiums at Toftrees Resort.

Virginia Tech's River course is a good track. I don't play from the tips there, it is a monster. Fairly ecconomical as well. I live 5 miles or so from the course and play it once or twice a summer. The big reason I dont play more is that it is a really great deal for students, and faculty which makes it a bit crowded.

Go Hokies! I love the River Course. I highly recommend it to anyone that can make it there. I agree on the comment that it is a monster from the tips. I only played it from the back tees once (second round of a 36 hole day there)...I am maybe 250-260 carry off the tee and just about every par 4 played like a par 5. All three major college courses in the triangle area are quality. My favorites in order were: Dook, UNC, NC State. I have also played the Furman Course in Greenville, SC....very nice and good value.

I usually shoot in the high 70s or low 80s. However, when my buddies and I played OK State University's Karsten Creek, it ate my lunch. Now, it was very hot (typical OK summer day) and it had been raining for a couple of days prior to us playing, so the Pro recommended we walk (pull cart) instead of a cart seeing it was cart-path only.

Β

I saw every part of the course :scare2: and I must say it is beautiful. It has everything you could ask for:

  • Elevation changes
  • Length
  • Super fast fairways and greens (even though when I played every drive basically plugged due to the excess rain)
  • Wide fairways
  • Zoysia fairways and t-boxes
  • etc

I shot 107 (I was exhausted by hole #14) and made a promise I would return and conquer this beast....Needless to say, this is a beautiful course - no wonder OSU alums go one to be great PGA golfers.

Β

BTW - I am still waiting on the opportunity to redeem myself :golfer:

Putter - Bettinardi Queen Bee #6
Shoes - Ecco Hybrid
Ball - Maxfli Tour X

Love my home course at UF but UMich has a really cool alister mackenzie track.

Β

Michigan's McKenzie course isn't even their best course.

Michigan's Radrick Farms (Pete Dye's first "championship course") is the nicest University course I've played.

Eastern Michigan's Eagle Crest is one of the most difficult.

The Michigan Blue Course (McKenzie) is nice, but it is so old that many blind shots occur as well as some quirk.

Michigan State's Forest Acres West has a great front nine.

Β

Β

I think Radrick has much more quirk than UMGC. So many holes at Radrick that are target golf/immediate doglegs. Not visually appealing. UM is one of the most classic and challenging designs there is imo. Yes, a couple blind tee shots on the front, but that is it. Truly a phenomenal course.

Biased, but UM (McKenzie) is just an all around amazing golf course. Elevation, classic McKenzie green complexes, very challenging. Just a perfect old school parkland type course that has many of the characteristics of another McKenzie gem down south.

Β

Still never really cared for UM's other track (Radrick Farms).

Kind of my thought as well. The use of the elevation changes is outstanding, and the course really doesn't appear as though it required much land to be moved. Could be a bit longer, but really, just a fantastic course.

Β

Just don't play it once football season has started.

I've played University Ridge (UW) a handful of times since I'm a Madison resident. It's a great course and isn't too difficult to get on and decent prices.

Β

Unfortunately, I haven't played others so don't know where it ranks, but it's my favorite Madison area course.

Palouse Ridge, Washington State University, Pullman, WA. Great variety of holes, good views, lots of elevations changes, and plenty of shot variety/options. As difficult or as fun as you want depending on the tees you pick.

Β

The University of Idaho golf course in Moscow, Idaho, has some interesting hole designs, but unfortunately maintenance has gone downhill in the last few years.

I couldn't agree more with you in regards to UM. I think fully restored and getting rid of grain in greens and it's top 100 course easily. The land and the routing are so good.

Β

Radrick has a lot of potential and could be Dye's best work with a full out resto with someone watching Pete from doing stupid stuff like he has to other top designs of his over the years.

GroupGolfer.com has a $35 for 18 (cart plus range balls) at Cornell's RTJ Course. Never played there but it has a great reputation and $35 seems like a nice deal.

Β

How does this groupgolfer thing work? I live about 90 minutes from Cornell yet never played the RTJ Course.

It's very easy to sign up and daily a deal is send to your email. I receive the North Carolina specials however I often check out the other states offerings. Each offer is only up for a limited time and has a minimum number of buys before the deal is activated on but I cannot recall a deal not reaching that minimum. The website has all the answers and I recommend checking it out as you never know what course (or item) may come up next!

I’d agree with all who have played Finley at UNC. Played there about a month ago and it’s really good. Walker Course at Clemson and UGA β€œwhere the Dawgs play” round out the 3 uni courses I’ve played this year.

Β

Β

I'm playing there Monday with a $39 voucher that I bought from GroupGolfer! Hopefully the temps stay around 90 as those high 90's really sap the energy out of me...
