Getting really frustrated by the length of rounds.

Sat and Sunday golf means either first off or darn close. Sadly after a long week of work thats a 4:30-5:30am reality check. Only way I would ever tee off at 10am would be at a club, period. Those mid morning times are PRIME trolling hours...BB

Exactly, play really early or really late on weekends. In summer, sometimes I'll just wait until really late, so no one in front or behind me, play 2 balls or more a hole.

We are third off the box every Sunday AM, we're done with 27 in under 5 hours, first 18 in about 3:15 then get 'stuck' behind others on 3rd nine. If couldn't play early, wouldn't be playing as even a 2 hour 9 seems like an eternity.

Play in the afternoon. Where I live, on Sat. courses are almost empty. Just do what you need to do in the morning.

My club has developed a weird (to me) pattern this spring and summer. On Saturday mornings we are absolutely slammed until about 1:30pm, then crickets. Then on Sundays the place is a ghost town until around lunch time and the tee sheet stays full most of the afternoon.

So if I want a solo round, I wait until after lunch on Saturday or tee off at 10-11am on Sundays and can mostly breeze around. It did not work that way in the previous dozen summers I've been a member.

Think ahead. Get a rough idea of the greens slope as you are driving up. Visualize your next shot before you get to your ball. Nobody needs to take 5-6 practice swings. When it is your turn, be ready. If you are riding in a cart and your ball is less than 30 yards from your partners, it is ok to walk over to your ball with a couple of clubs instead of sitting and watching them hit.

To some extent you're right. I went private and my reasons were access and pace of play. I cant see ever playing public golf for normal play again. I would definitely quite before dealing with 5 hour rounds.

100%...not even to "some extent". Imagine a tee sheet for tomorrow that shows openings from 930a to 1100a....then almost wide open after 2pm.

Thinking back to when I belonged to a very nice private course, weekend mornings were pretty much the same as any public course regarding pace of play. One still had to call in for tee times and unless you could get off early rounds were just as slow. The biggest differences I saw at this particular course was the fact that the club had fewer members than players who would typically try to play on a public course so there were more tee times that could be had or access for someone who just wanted to go out later by himself/herself. The other thing was that most members were still of working age so the course was pretty wide open during the week. Public/semi-private courses that that I have been playing for the last 9 to 10 years are heavy with retired guys during the week.

Church crowd on Sundays?

Not everyone has access to, nor can afford, a private club. Partial solution at best.

True WR...but I do know some folks who, if they added up the cost of all their rounds, driving their car all over to different courses, the cost of range balls, and the downside of being "away" from the house for 6+ hours, the added cost for a decent private club is not that much more. Not to mention the other added pluses like the club having a gym, tennis, pool, etc. At that point the whole family can participate while folks are out on the course.

All very good points.

I personally will just have to suffer with the little semi-private near me. Having had to take early SS, I couldn't afford a full private even if one was down here.

It could be worse. :)

We have a reasonably priced private course here that I've been lobbying the wife on for a few years. Rates start at 2x what I currently pay at $1500 the first year and goes up $100 a year for the next 10 years. I'm less concerned about that as much as the location. It's just a pain to get to. Plus, a lot of members are leaving citing lack of value as a reason. The course is nice, but our season is short, and $2500 to golf for potentially as little as 5 months a year seems steep. The only non-golf amenity they currently have is a pool, which we would use.

The other two private courses are twice that and have a lot more minimums. A co worker of mine is at one of the expensive courses, and he tells me he spends about $12k a year there. My current membership is $725. I can just live with slow rounds at that difference.

Seasonal golf makes a huge difference. Paying $12K/year....and even during the season it's hard to count on the weather is tough to fork out. I'm so used to not having a season I don't think about that aspect until someone points it out.

This is my life right now. Empty course two terrible golfers ahead of me. Been sitting on this bench watching this gabroni for 5 minutes trying to fish his ball out of the water...

Four of us teed off at 9:30 a.m. this morning and done at 12:52 - it was nice. Waited briefly for a group ahead on one hole towards the end of the round, we didn't rush, we all played well and it was great (and unusual on a Saturday morning, but the tourists in our area have diminished abruptly, as they usually do at some point in August).

So there's hope!

Can't complain in the end. Birdied the hole before this, birdied this hole (had an eagle chance), and birdied the next hole. Had a 50 foot putt on 18 and ended up with a tap in par for my first round under par in a few years. If I would have rushed to play through, it never would have happened.
