Whats the deal with poker chips?

Recommended Posts

I hate poker chips and will never use one, but they don’t drive me off the deep end like, it seems, it does to others.

My friend always marks with a penny. I can barely see a penny lying on the green. It blends in with our greens. Then he gets all pissy when someone steps in his line. I play with him all the time and almost all the time when he marks I can’t see it. It’s not a shiny penny. It’s very matte. Very dull.

At least with poker chips I’ve never come close to stepping in someone’s line. They aren’t for me, as they don’t stick too well to the magnet on the cap bill.

I'm not sure if that was a subtle attempt at a wind up... But cap bill magnets might get this topic a few more pages....

I’ve been using magnetic marks on my hat forever. Most of the guys I play with in my club do also. There just isn’t the stigma here that there seems to be elsewhere for some reason. It’s way easier than fishing through your pocket for a penny, dime or quarter.

If I didn’t use the hat magnet, I may have changed to a poker chip at some point.

I used to use a one Pound coin, but not only was it thick, sometimes it was too hard to see/find as it was the perfect color to blend into the green.

I decided to use the least valuable thing I could find. Somehow I have a 5 Bolivar Venezuelan coin. I think it is worth two thousandths of one cent and probably much less on the black market. So that is my ball marker. :D

As far as the poker chip goes, if you are distracted by that, you need to work on your concentration ability. If you can't get over your distraction, just ask the other player nicely. Don't be a ****head like the old guy on the first page.

No just easily annoyed.

Then distracted by being annoyed, maybe.

There's one irascible old coot in our weekend group who doesn't much care for the poker chip thing (among many others). A new guy maybe 30 years old joined us one Saturday and had the really big, thick poker chip. The kind so big I can't imagine anyone would use them in an actual poker game.

Plops it down on the first green more or less vaguely in irascible old coot's line. The old guy walked over, replaced the "poker chip" with a penny, tossed it to the young guy and said, "You can keep the penny, I've got a pocket full".

Here's my penny, happy?

I use them too now and again. But not with white hats

I use a marker made by Seamus that my wife got me and I’m from Alabama so the houndstooth is a nice personal touch that I like. It’s bigger than a quarter or a penny, but basically as flat. It’s easier to see and I’ve never thought of it as distracting.

If there is a penny in your line and your ball hits it, the ball will be knocked off line. Just ask the guy to move it and don’t play with him again. Sounds like you dislike poker chip guy for more than just being poker chip guy. The whole replacing with a penny and tossing the poker chip back is petty, whether you’re into poker chips or not.

Just hope I never end up in NB's group. What a friggin joke. This guy has rabbit ears, this guy can't stand a piece of plastic on the green, this guy's easily annoyed, this one hates music. Senior discount for dinner ends at 4:45, boys. Better hustle through your round or they may be all out of prune juice by the time you saunter into Bob Evans.

Yeah, I know. People showing up to just, you know, play golf are dinosaurs. Need to die off and make room for all the cool-kid toys and trinkets.

Who's not playing golf? They're just not playing it YOUR way. Let's all put persimmons back in the bag and wear metal spikes. Those new fangled metal woods are ruining the game. Gimme a break.

I've only been around the game a quarter century or so, not really long enough to be pining away from wooden clubs or steel spikes.

I just miss when golfers were basically in the habit of staying out of other players' way and exercises basic courtesy.

I honestly don't think I ever met anyone 20 years ago who would have even considered playing music through a boombox in their golf cart during a round or tossing a 3" diameter, 1/4" thick hung of plastic down on the putting green to "mark" their ball. Those are modern affectations that are each a very minor distraction or annoyance. But there's more of that crap every day and I've no problem with some "grumpy old guy" pushing back on it.

To each their own, I suppose, but again, the game has changed. There is much greater access to the game, and there's an entire sentiment across the sport to 'grow the game' which inherently means bringing new blood into the mix. If the 'grumpy old guy' only wants things to go his way, be played the old way, and makes no room for new trends in the game, that's exactly the elitist approach and mindset that does the opposite of grow the game.

It seems incredibly foolish to me that a 3" round, 1/4" tall piece of plastic would be distracting or off-putting to anyone. Music in the cart, I'll give you that, though I enjoy it, but we're talking about being annoyed, not just disliking, annoyed by someone using a ball marker. Just seems insane to me. Like I said....you play in your group, I'll play in mine, and hopefully never the two shall meet.

I collect Casino chips. I have two of those round racks full of $1(mostly) and $5 chips. Although most are worthless, I am surprised at some of the values on closed casinos.

Every now and then I'll pull out my $10,000 Dunes Chip (apparently just to piss off other players on the green).

Would you be annoyed if someone never marked his ball, just left it there while everyone else putted? I personally would not, as long as it's not within a foot or so of my line another golf ball sitting there isn't an issue at all.

But the vast majority of golfers DO want the others to mark their ball. They don't like seeing other balls on the green while they're putting, even if they're away from their exact line.

So that's the rub. Why do people want to "mark" their ball with SOMETHING LARGER THAN THE GOLF BALL? That's the crazy part.

To be honest, I don't remember the last time I even paid a lick of attention to what my playing partner was using or whether or not they marked their ball. If it's in my line, I ask them to move it, and I don't care if its twice the size of the ball or half the size of the ball. Mark it, don't mark it, I don't care. Not a big fan of the poker chips, but some people are better about them than others. I played with a guy who used one last week, and he would only mark his ball with the chip when he was clearly not in anyone's putting line or sight line. Self awareness is not a given however.

For me, poker chips are just played out. Seems similar to getting a barbed wire tat on your arm in 2018.

Or the Puma "creamsickle" all-orange monochrome outfit circa 2014.

I'm waiting for the John Daly inspired pajama-pants-on-fat-guy look to disappear. None of the regulars at my club seem to have picked up on that trend but when I play away from home seems like there's one or two lardasses wearing those as though it were actually fashionable.

You said earlier it's etiquette if someone finds something distracting that they should change it. So when someone asked earlier if your shirt was distracting to them, would you change it. You ignored it. Is there a reason? Your shirt color distracts me. It's white. The ball is white, I could get confused. Hundreds of colors and you have to match the golf ball. Entirely distracting.

This is how you sound about poker chips.

It depends. If they're distracted by a perfectly normal polo shirt like millions of golfers have worn for generations then the distraction is all on them.

If I were wearing something purposely garish, say a tank top with the name of a casino emblazoned in neon DayGlo colors across the front, then it would surprise me if I were asked to change into appropriate golf attire.

Hint, a quarter is analogous to the polo shirt and an oversized poker chip is analogous the tank top...

A poker chip for a ball marker is analogous to a neon tank top? That’s a stretch if I’ve ever heard one.

A polo is required by the course as proper attire.

A poker chip is allowed by the rules as a ball marker.

Not the same as someone trying to wear a tank top on the course, which would be in violation of the dress code. Nice try though.

Exactly.

I couldn’t care less if someone marks their ball or not, and if they do, I couldn’t care less what they mark it with as long as it’s not in my line. They could put their golf bag down to mark their ball for all I care. I’d probably laugh a little, poke some fun at them, but would still hit my putt without a care in the world about what they were using to mark their ball.

I need to go purchase a poker chip ball marker to see who I can piss off. People nowadays are pissed off about everything. If a poker chip ball marker is upsetting you I am pretty sure you have bigger issues.

I never take notice of what people use to mark there balls and I really do not care. If a coin or poker chip is in my line I ask them to move it. It is not that hard!

Just put 36 cents in your bag. A dime to mark because it's the smallest. A penny if the silver distracts your playing partner, and a quarter if you want people to see your line.
