no one but us will know what "THDC" or "The Hive" are, both of which ought to lead to some epic conversations when he has to explain both.

"what's THDC? sounds vaguely like something illegal."

"it's my handle."

"handle of what?"

"my online name. actually, that's not true, it's my online nickname."

"you have an online nickname? what's your online name?"

"my real name."

<confuseface> "but what does it STAND for?"

"truth, honesty, and the other two are representative of Chinese characters that mean 'kicking the redhead's behind.'"

"ok then, what's 'The Hive'? a honey collecting group?"

"those are my online buddies."

"your online buddies? does your wife know about this?"

"yes, and she encouraged me to meet up with them."

"u serious clark?"

"yes, and i've even got my son involved."

"what kind of online site is this?"

"it's mainly for nerds. dungeons and dragons and golf, basically. think penthouse forums for dweebs. and the pictures are of each other with captions, or shopjobs of stupid crap that refers to jokes from 4 threads ago."

"golf?"

"yep."

"an online golf forum, huh? what's the website?"

"you wouldn't like it. it's only for those of us who can afford custom golf bags."

Yeah, I was trying to think of how to explain it to randos. Gotta come up with some nickname for THDC.

Grey and foggy- what a perfect day to try out a matte green golf ball. Unfortunately the duo pro wasn't in stock at GG but I picked up some Duo Softs for cheap.

Damn thing was like a tracer round, the only way to really lose one is in a hazard.

Late for a topic, but what do you guys figure for cold weather yardage? I noticed that iron shots had a lot less juice on them today and drives we're carrying shorter.

By my own small sample size, at 45 degrees today and 8 iron lost 10ish yards and pitching wedge was 6 or 7 yards shorter. High lofted clubs were pretty normal though.

Wasn't frigid by any means, but that cold heavy air off the water was just dead. It's a narrow weather window before the courses get frozen, and you're dealing with actual course closures.

Duo Soft consistently was longer than the XV, which was kind of funny to see. I had to remind myself this was just silly season and the new irons weren't actually that short.

It was a solid club and a half less carry distance on Sunday. The tricky part was that if you actually hit the green, it would take a huge bounce. So you might actually hit the same club and only carry it to the front edge, but end up way past the hole, and likely off.

Front pins were diabolical.

One of my opponents said my short game was “Seve-esque” after I got up and down from everywhere on holes 1-3... quite possibly the best golf compliment I’ve ever gotten -or will ever get- in my entire life.

Unrelated: I thought tonight was the early showing of “Aquaman” via Prime. Duh, it’s tomorrow. Ended up seeing the “Spiderverse” movie, and my son and I both LOVED it. It was funny and beautiful and inspiring. Awesome on the big screen.

Me : OK, guys who's doing Dom's drills with me?

giphy.gif

You all are hilarious. Sorry this is late. Here's what I do pretty much every time I practice or show up before a tournament (especially if the practice green is clear).

1) Set up my Eyeline Mirror with a straight uphill putt around 8-10 feet. It makes me confirm that my address and head position is the same every time which is very important to me and allows me to be more robotic (I also have more mirrors if anyone needs one.) I'll make about 4 in a row (8 when practicing). If I miss one, I restart the drill. If I have even more time I'll use their MyRoll 2-Color golf balls. That way I know my putts are rolling straight and end-over-end.

2) Set up four golf balls on downhill putts all at different lengths. The longest being around 30-40 feet. I don't care about break here, I'm just getting the speed of the greens. Starting from the shortest one, I hit each putt so they get beyond the hole, but run no more than 3 feet by. If I make it it's a bonus. If one rolls short or goes too long, I restart the drill.

3) Then I'll do a wheel drill (4 balls before a tourney, 6 if practicing) on the hole with the steepest slope. 3-4 feet and just make them all in a row.

4) Lastly I set up four golf balls but for uphill putts at different lengths and do the same thing as #2. I think starting/ending in uphill putts makes sure I'm making aggressive strokes.

5) I usually chip and hit golf balls after this.

6) Before I go play I'll just putt with one ball and throw another down if something confused me or I made a bad stroke. Before tournaments I try and make a lot of short putts if possible.

That's it!

Assuming you complete this warm-up in the most efficient way possible, how long does this typically take you?

Trying to back in to my wake up time for my next round of golf in June when it finally stops raining.

I'd say 10 minutes when everything is rolling. Spent about 25 minutes last Sunday before that second tournament day round. Probably should have hit more golf balls...

So when you are working on 4 and 2 - do you have any sort of gauge for these putts in terms of how far you are taking the putter back or is it all by feel? In other words, for a 10 foot uphill putt vs a 40 foot uphill putt - taking the putter back just inside your right foot, halfway through your right foot etc.

I repeatedly tried to just be a feel putter on the long putts and it wasnt working out. So the last lesson I had we worked on making sure I was engaging my core and turning a bit especially as we got into the 30-50 foot range. But she wants me to work on this kind of thing in warm ups - in terms of getting a feel on long putts for that course's green speed - since a lot of my first putts seem to fall into that range.

(placeholder for Kent "Just hit your approach shots closer" post)

No, I generally use the mirror when trying to gauge how far back I'm taking it or how far forward. Everything else is just feel. I need the feeling of making a confident stroke. I think all those speed drills have helped that.

This article applies to a lot of us that picked up golf later in life but were good at other sports.

Not necessarily lowered expectations but a reminder to just enjoy the game.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/29/opinion/sunday/in-praise-of-mediocrity.html

“Lost here is the gentle pursuit of a modest competence, the doing of something just because you enjoy it, not because you are good at it.”

“There are depths of experience that come with mastery. But there is also a real and pure joy, a sweet, childlike delight, that comes from just learning and trying to get better. Looking back, you will find that the best years of, say, scuba-diving or doing carpentry were those you spent on the learning curve, when there was exaltation in the mere act of doing.”

“Especially when it comes to physical pursuits, but also with many other endeavors, most of us will be truly excellent only at whatever we started doing in our teens. What if you decide in your 40s, as I have, that you want to learn to surf? What if you decide in your 60s that you want to learn to speak Italian? The expectation of excellence can be stultifying.”

I don't know about you guys but I'm trying to make the senior tour. I've got 15 years to catch up to Tiger.

Standing water on a few greens this morning, cant imagine MV will be open for a couple days at least especially if it rains all day today.

Could be worse - could be snow.
