MD/DC/VA Golfers - Twelve Monkeys Mental Divergence

UMD is usually much greener by this time of year. The lack of rainfall has really slowed things this season. All of the irrigation is city water (WSSC) which is silly expensive so only the greens are watered on occasion. During really hot weather the fairways may get a little water but rainfall is the primary  source. I am not really sure of the regulatory issues but the 'ponds' on the course are really just storm water management.

Maryland is like 2 inches behind average rainfall YTD so I would imagine courses will be subject to where their water comes from.

The fairways seemed pretty dry on some parts of the course. Especially 18.

UMD greening up nicely, more rain this weekend and some warming temps will really help.

Played a club event at Briarwood in York last weekend. It is a wide open course but the strong winds had a big effect. Conditions were pretty good and the greens were very firm and deceptively tricky. Fun course that you really feel like you could score well on.

Brambleton had punched the greens 2 weeks ago & they are still absolutely awful to putt on.  A 2 footer is no guarantee.  And that absolutely sucks when you're in a league & have to hole everything.  You may as well put down a 3-putt on every green.  They will take forever to come back :banghead:

I was a volunteer Rules Official yesterday at Raspberry Falls, VSGA Fourball qualifier.  One of their staff told me that they had punched their greens 3 weeks ago, and they were still really bad, seriously bumpy.  At Stoneleigh ours were punched on about March 20 and 21, and really only recovered properly about a full month later, but they're perfect now.  Lack of rain and cool temperatures mean the grass doesn't grow like it normally would.

Played 9 at Northwest yesterday afternoon and it was in decent shape but obviously very wet. Was very surprised to finish the front nine in under 2 hours after teeing off at 5pm.

This morning my dumb friends and I tried to play Hampshire Greens before the storm. Got in 1 hole before the all out down pour started. Played 7 holes absolutely drenched and called it when the lighting came. The shop gave us a full rain check which was pretty cool of them after we had already played 7.

Define "the area" and your budget. If you're just looking for basic putting help, probably can get that from just about any course in the area and not drive too far or spend more than $100. If you want something specialized/higher end, I worked with Erika Larkin out at Creighton Farms, she's an Aimpoint Instructor and also a hell of a coach. You're going to pay for it though, its been a few years but I think she's up to $250/hr now for non members.

Yes, I kind of want higher end instruction, and Erika actually taught me AimPoint Express at CF a few years back as well. She's great!

My club had an event at Flatbush in Littlestown Pa on Saturday. Nice course, typical of the southern Pa Mom and Pops. No complaints about conditions tee to green. Deep rough and very slightly shaggy fairways are the defense. Greens had been punched about 3 or so weeks ago didn't have much impact.  Worth a visit if you are looking for someplace different to play.

I know it's already been talked about but Blue Mash is now 129 up from 119 for a weekend tee time? Are they trying to go out of business?

$129, ROFL - I thought Whiskey was bad.

Someone sure has done a good job of selling the concept of dynamic pricing to area courses. Covid did a great job of increasing the annual number of rounds at courses but I would bet that number will fall back at some point. It is getting tough to get a mid afternoon tee time on weekends because many are waiting for the price drop.

I think dynamic pricing generally makes sense. But is Blue Mash a $129 course now? Really? Fredrick - IMO - has the best collection of public courses anywhere, if thats what the market is I guess thats what the market is.

Oh and that will be another $10 for range balls please. FOH. For $129 they better start putting the balls out on the range like any course of that price level would.

Thanks, now I don't feel so bad about paying private club dues despite not playing much this season.

Agreed - especially now that my wife is playing more.

I used to tell people thinking of going private - dont try to quantify it or compare numbers, there are a lot of things you cant put a price on. Living close to the club, practicing for free, walking 18 in 3.5 hours on a Saturday...stuff like that. But the higher greens fees get the better I feel.

The usual muni I play is Northwest and if you don't book Saturday or Sunday as soon as tee times are live you're not getting a tee time until at least 4pm. It's nuts. Even during the week it's tough.

Blue Mash was priced reasonably last season at least during week. I could play 18 around 330 For 49. That is now an 84 dollar tee time.   I'll stick to the MCG courses for that price.
