3 full weeks ahead of freedom, in between jobs.

I know the thread's been mostly dead and guys organize times by other means, but if any of you are interested in playing a weekday round at CCMD let me know. As long as I start and finish between the daycare hours, times are pretty flexible.

Mark Russo at Nighthawk. May be a trek for you but he’s one of the best in MD. Been seeing him for two years.

Anyone know a kid who is learning to play that will want a Green Grass card to Olney Golf Park?  I have tried to sell it to recoup my losses but will feel better with it in good hands rather than trashed.  The card is good until April 2023.

One of the few (if any perks) of aeration time is the standing offer from the head pro to get members out somewhere else. It worked out today as I was able to link up with a group to play the Green Spring Valley Hunt Club for the first time.

The course has been around for a really long time in the old-money horse country, not too far from Caves and within a short drive of BCC and a handful of egregiously expensive private schools. They've got 18 holes today with multiple architects to the bill, with the primary one being Robert Trent Jones, Sr. No photos were allowed but a few highlights:

  • Unfortunately, their greens were also on the rebound from earlier aeration and were not running at full speed. There is an almost-proper redan hole but the slope was too grabby to play the proper shot. Otherwise there could have been some absolute nightmare pins, since the greens are some of the smallest I've ever seen.
  • Throughout the re-designs the architects clearly paid attention to bunkering, this course had some of the best fairway bunker placement with lips as tall as your shoulders in some spots. One particular par 5 had 3-4 of them placed at the dogleg corner, the dogleg bailout miss, 150 yards out, and ~50 yards out. Our entire group each had one shot end up in one of those.
  • OB was prevalent on maybe half the holes but it was never anything you couldn't play around with solid contact. Water came into play a handful of times and created some course management problems on a few short par 4's.
  • Good use of elevation most of the time, there is a stretch in the middle of the round where all the holes tend to blend together. You play something like 8 or 9 straight par 4's before the closing stretch.
  • Aside from slower greens, the course conditioning was perfect. Ryegrass fairways and lots of sand in the bunkers. The rough was not tall but very dense.
  • This was only the second time I've seen a course with opening and closing par 3's. These are noteworthy because they're placed on the clubhouse "lawn" where the tennis courts and putting green are located. It would be pretty cool if you were spectating a club tourney but those two holes weren't anything to write home about.
  • Speaking of routing, this course has the most atrocious routing I've ever seen with absolutely no signage. Without one group member having played there before, we would have been completely lost by the 4th or 5th hole and definitely would have finished the round out of order. The cart paths randomly stop and start, tee markers look the same on every box, and one tee box was hidden in the shade right next to one of the greens.
  • Practice facility was just outstanding, one would hope at a club like that.

Bonus: I've been in a lot of golf carts over the years but these things had seats that felt like freaking leather bucket seats. By far the most comfortable golf cart seat, not just for cushioning but zero sliding around. My playing partner said he's been to a few spots (resort courses mostly) that use them but I wasn't aware that carts could be that comfy.

Headed back out towards Frederick this weekend, this time to play PB dye with a few friends. I’ve already played Worthington so figured PBD was next on the list. Discussed playing Whiskey Creek but $150 for 18 seems excessive.

Wyncote is much better but both are great tracks.

Last 3 pictures are Pilgrim’s oak. Didn’t take any of Wyncote today.

I am interested in purchasing the card if you still have it. I just moved to area and this is where I have been going to the range. Does it include the balls or just access to the grass areas?

thanks

A couple of us, myself included, have done putter fittings at The Golf Dr. in DC and really liked the results:

Awesome, thank you. I will check it out. Had a buddy do a iron fitting there and he liked the results. The recommendation is very much appreciated
