Why, in the name of all that’s unholy, would you come out here with a bunch of people who know nothing about your game or your work ethic, and ask for advice??? Don’t you have any real friends??? And what does the pro say at your home course??? And those you compete with??? Realistically I give you know chance and you’re robbing your boss by posting drivel. Is that honest enough for you?

Kinda been there - Kinda done that.

After 27 years as a club pro (4 as assistant and 23 has head pro at 2 different courses), I decided to throw my lot onto playing the Senior PGA Tour. I was a 5 hdcp when I turned "pro" in 1965 (75 was very good for me then). Over the years, I developed into a solid local performer (2 state opens, numerous PGA section championships) and some modest success at the national level in PGA Club Pro Championships (numerous top 15's and a best of 3rd in 1988). I qualified for 1 US Open and 4 PGA Championships (thru finishes in Club Pro). I played in 9 PGA Tour events (5 Kemper Opens and 4 A/B Championships).

When I was 48 (and playing my best golf), I decided that I wanted to give "tour golf" a shot. I worked a deal with my club where they bought out my golf operation (pro shop, carts, etc) in exchange for salary. This was in late 1991. This provided me with a nice "bankroll" of about 30K. I worked at the club till end of June 1992 and took leave of absence (no pay) to practice and play to get ready for Senior Q School in November. I played 4 events on Hogan/Nike/Nationwide (can't remember the name back then) in Sept and October (1 cut made) and the Club Pro that year out in California (tie 10th). Finished 3rd in Regionals at Sarasota and 7th in Finals in Palm Springs to gain full exemption for 1993 season.

Did not keep exempt status for 94 (58th on money list and then missed at Q school), nor did I gain exempt status for 95, 96, or 97. Played local section events and senior mini tour events as well as 4 spotting for Senior Tour events (I would qualify for 4 or 5 events each year). Partial exempt status for 98 with 13th place finish at Q School. Got in 17 events. Did not make it thru Q school for 99 season and decided that I had given it my best shot with some modest success, so I hung up my "competitive" spikes. Worked in the golf industry (Soft Spikes) for the next 10 years and have enjoyed retired life since 2009.

My best finishes were a tie for 2nd at Long Island in 93 and a 5th place at Tampa in 95 after Monday qualifying. When I left the tour at end of 98, I had more money in the bank then when I started. I did not have a "sponsor" but did have an equipment contract with Taylor Made.

I was never a flashy "stick" that could shoot real low scores (no 63's or 64" came showing up in my game). My career best was a 64 in the VA State Open one year. Good days for me were 67's and 68's, but I could keep my poor days down to around par.

I have no regrets about giving it a shot. Was not sure what I would have done if I had not made it thru Q School the 1st time.

Still play casual golf 3 or 4 times per week with hdcp staying about scratch. Minor physical issues (almost 76 now). Right hip replacement in May 2016 and bad case of sciatica in fall last year that laid me up for almost 4 months.

Certainly try to find a course that has at least almost "tour" conditions to practice and play. Short game is where it is at. There a number of "overachievers" on the tour (Zach Johnson et al) who have done well and numerous "can't miss" types who fizzle out.

Best of luck.

Bruce

Thank you for sharing your story and very extensive career! That is quite the run!

There are various ways to try your luck without being "all in."

Like you mentioned, you could move to an area with a lot of mini tours. Florida or Cali, maybe somewhere in Texas or possibly Atlanta. You'll find out pretty quickly if you're ready to play for your supper.

Try to get into the kind of "straight" job where your ability to play well would be considered an asset. The ground floor in a sports agency or a big insurance or investment team that wants a guy who can entertain clients on the course. Certain large not-for-profits like having people who are willing to play the "disease of the week" tour (charity scrambles). Most hospitals hire "community engagement" people for this sort of role.

Based on your replies here, it seems like you have good communication and people skills. Those skills and a negligible handicap can take you a long way in a big city.

Finally, it seems like there are at least a small number of aspiring golfers who are able to stay afloat using the internet or social media as their platform for promoting their career. If you're engaging, creative and personable, maybe you can build the kind of online presence that would cause followers to make small contributions toward your travel expenses, and eventually even gain a few sponsors.

One last point, this one more "life advice" than professional advice: life is short, adulthood is a mirage, and middle age is, most days, a kick in the nuts.

The relative wealth and freedom you imagined as a child eventually materializes, but along with it comes increasing responsibility, declining eyesight and weaker bones. Soon after most people gain independence, they willingly give it away again.

Pursue the thing that calls to you. As long as you're not responsible for anyone but yourself, you can live any way you choose for as long as you want. Protect your health and avoid debt.

Eventually you find yourself sitting around a campfire with a bunch of other dads, talking about life. What do you want your story to be?

"I used to dream about playing golf for a living"

or

"I played golf for a living, and here's what happened..."

Dude, what is really holding you back?

Girlfriend/$/Belief

Wayne Defrancesco is a teacher in Baltimore area who has a web presence, All American at LSU, played on the Mini Tours until a fused back. Several CPC wins, and multiple majors played. He also teaches a few guys like Ben Silverman trying to make it. Take him to lunch or pay for a lesson and get some real world, honest appraisal in your area.

Girlfriend - everybody needs love. This attempt will not go well with her. Even if she is the most supportive human on the planet, pro golf is a selfish endeavor and a vagabond life. If life with her and a family are most important (and that is noble) - bail on the dream.

$ & Travel - how much money you got and how much travel have you done? I have worked professionally on the road (racing business) for 25 years. Being on 2+ flights per week and living out of suitcases in sub 3 star hotels takes a special breed. I loved it at 18, hated it at 22 and went back to school, back at it by 30, and no it’s just my life. My wife and kids understand and it’s the best way for me to make a living for us. But I miss a great many activities through the week and have a million hotel/airline points so vacay is always free.

Belief - only you will know. And when it gets bad, and it will, do you have the mental toughness to keep going and be one of the few who says it was worth it and made you stronger. Zach Johnson wasn’t the best on his team at Drake - but he believed he could succeed. Kevin Streelman lived out of his car.

“What’s your Dream?”

Can you handle it?

Go talk to Wanye.

Golf is a mental exercise and you know the answer bout your situation.....

If you know you can then its already done. Same is true if you know you cant. Its that simple that's the catch. Are you trying to barely make and limp onto the tour or show Tiger and Jack how its done? Are you fine with crumbs from the masters table or do you smile with the deepest confidence when you put one in the water?

I feel many pros/ams still dont understand the mental side of golf even though they are physically sound. Watching the top golfers at the Ryder cup confirmed the mental game is still elusive to many...

Can't figure how to like my own posts

Just because someone says something blunt or negative or brutally honest it doesn’t mean they’re trolling. Sometimes as well, if you want to undertake a foolhardy enterprise, you need to hear a blunt and brutal reality check. It might be exactly what you need to hear.

It’s less a brutally honest reality check and more just stupid.

He should talk to the local pro? That’s probably someone whose significantly worse than him. His real life friends? What would they know about anything?

Telling a +4 handicap that’s not playing full time that he has no chance or that it’s a foolhardy enterprise is just stupid as well.

The above may be true in general, probably is and you would know more than most.

Just made me think how unusual it is, and fortunate in a way, that was lucky in HS/after to know just a little bit a club pro who knew back in the day what it took, played a little and was a friend of Trevino and have known one going on a dozen years or so another who also played a little and has a family member playing this week and definitely knows what it takes to make it then and now.

That's just in little old Iowa. ;-)

Never know where you might find knowledge, and understand your point as well, but also understand the point that OP probably has a lot of places to get some perspective in person without relying on internet strangers (but if he's smart, may reach out to some of the folks on here or in his area that he now knows could help him figure it out, maybe pretty quickly, if he's serious about finding out).

Without actually talking to a pro , a local can see something that the OP has IT. Also if you’re beating your local area pros and assistants that can be a sign not an absolute sign but a sign you can compete at a higher level. Maybe not at a PGA Tour level but a stepping stone toward that goal.

Most local pros aren't as good at playing golf as you think. Which is fine because you can be a great teacher with mediocre ability, but the skill level required to be a teaching pro is far from elite. Therefore beating local pros and assistants tells me minimal about your ability to successfully play pro and do more than tread water financially.

There’s no way anyone is going to be able to just see whether or not he has IT, whatever that means.

There’s a very small number of people who are at this level who aren’t pro’s or high level college players. He’s already going to be beating local course pros easily.

My advise would be to get into as best shape as possible, get a coach who has players on tour, practice almost every day, and start playing tournaments.

Sup Guys,

As I sit here on this gorgeous Friday afternoon, I am sitting here in the office at my cubicle doing absolutely nothing so I figured I would start a new thread.

Prior to the current office job I have now, I used to work as an assistant golf pro for a semi private facility just outside of Baltimore. I always had a passion for the game so it only made sense for me to work at a golf course as my first ever job. What I quickly learned throughout my adolescence was that if I continued to stay in this line of work the opportunity for advancement would ultimately dwindle especially at the club that I was working at the time. This was the main reason I stopped doing what I was doing. With all of this being said, I am now bored out of mind doing a job that I have zero interest in!

I currently maintain a +4ish handicap at the club I am at and keep having these wild thoughts of going pro and chasing the dream of becoming a successful touring pro. I know its a shot in the dark but I feel like if I dont give it some sort of shot I will spend the rest of my life in regret of not knowing what could happen.

GolfWRX users give it to me straight, I can take it.

Good afternoon?

I haven’t read any of the prior posts though seeing these threads before and knowing WRXers, there’s no shortage of bonehead posts along with some pure Platinum posts and advice.

All that I would say is that you should Play as many Open Tourneys as you can and get some Tourney golf under your belt.

Caps don’t really mean that much as Nathan Smith, a +4.8-5.1 and 5-Time USGA Champion and he missed the cuts in 3 Web.com events on a Sponser’s Excemptions along with missing the cut in his four Masters appearances(as a 4-Time Mid Am Champion), his best showing being 2 strokes over the line.

I take it that you’ve obviously Played some tourneys so you know that along with a tremendous amount of skill, it also takes some luck, as Monte, Isaac, Thrill and any of the guys that chased the dream will tell ya.

You also obviously know that at this level, where everyone has world class swings and games, even the trunk slammers and the guys that didn’t make it, it’s MENTAL!!!

Spend twice as much time on your mental game and visualizing as your physical game and swing/stroke.

At the end of the day and under extreme pressure, your swing/stroke will go south on ya.

Bank on it!!!

I’m obviously not speaking to negative thinking however Murphy’s law has a way of testing men and those that tell ole Murph to go fack himself and deal with the adversity and just concentrate on gettin the ball in the hole, not their friggin swings and strokes come out on top and keep goin.

As long as your mind does not, and you retain control of it instead of it controlling you, ya gotta chance!!

Oh, and getta new User Name my Friend, lol

Seriously, that ain’t even funny!!

The Very Best to ya Bro?

This is a great post lol I aint scared to say the "S" word, at least not yet..

But I definitely plan on playing as much tournament golf as possible! To bring up your point about mental strength, I understand that this is how a good player gets separated from a great one. Working on the mental game to me is harder than working on my actual physical game.

Thank you so much for the post brother.

Actually, I’ve used your first sentence in both this section and in the equipment section when guys who are supposedly scratch/Plus are askin strangers what irons to play??, but Jesus, I don’t get personal and attack the guy ??

He made it to the either the quarters or Semis of his state Am so he’s obviously got game, lol

And if you’re gonna attack someone, at least use spellcheck for chrissakes??

I will say that I’m sittin here in IV’s and it’s a long 70 minutes however I just saw your post and I LMAO??

I can’t wait to tell Maddie that I’m no longer the biggest d!ck on the board(she’s of course gonna want proof?) ??

Thank you Brother?

Have a great weekend?

RP

Having said something really stupid in relation to the poor lady who lost her eye the other day, it's good to know you think there are at least 2 people ahead of me!

Still think NTL was just trying to give the OP the reality he said he wasn't afraid of, but I'll let you guys wrangle on that. OP certainly has a couple of decent results but throwing up mid-80s in easy to enter mini tour events (and at least one really good round!) and no real strong am record after all this time, isn't exactly suggesting more than some casual musing on a Friday afternoon. Have to respect being in the arena, however, whatever the skill level and if I was a +3.6 instead of where I'm at, I'm sure I'd be musing a bit from time to time as well (but still would know better).

I'm only posting again in this thread because I've never heard "white shoe cherry arse p***y" before and have to know wtf is that, lol!

Hey Hawkster, I hope all’s well and actually, I was just busting Lefty’s stones as if we were sittin around the table in the card room and I tried to lighten it with the emoticons, lol. Actually it was lil Ava that suggested that I use more “happy face” emoticons with my posts, lololol. Well, that was before Madison told her that she wasn’t allowed to read any more of my posts when she too asked “Daddy, what is a ?*ss p***y,” ???

Madison was in the next room and I cringed because I knew what was comin next??

In a nutshell, it’s a “clubber,” or the guys that have an elitist entitled attitude yet are as soft as freshly baked ginger bread when the situation calls for “manning up,” lol.

Though I was just messin with Lefty cuz I really like his posts, one of my faves on the board.

Well, I’m gettin ready to have the tube removed so I gotta run but I hope that you’ve had a nice season Bro?

My Best,

Richard
