2019 US Open

ABC had the US TV contract and called it "The British Open" and titled all their tv leaderboards etc that way for years.....from like 1970 to 2000.

Here is ABC telecast in 2000 still calling it the british open. If it was a big deal the whole time, one would think the Brits wouldn't have waited over 3 decades to have the US broadcaster use the correct name.

Yup, and they call the PGA the "US PGA", so the Europeans can't complain too much.

Even the presenter on site called it the British Open in 1930:

The wind is howling and he doesn't want to putt because the ball will move down the slope on that tilty green or he'll get called for a penalty if he addresses the ball. The officials are out there telling him to play and he refuses to do so. The players are stacking up on the tee. After about a half hour they suspended play again and Brooks never did putt. Play resumed over ten hours later after the wind died down. To this day, still my favorite Brooks moment.

BK was the only one who had to deal with the conditions at that spot on that green at that time. Doesn’t matter what conditions other players were facing. The conditions at that place and time were going to cause him to be penalized and he said so. Good for him showing some moxie, not hypocrisy. Find something else to criticize.

Overall the course was setup too easy. Wind didnt blowing and greens were too soft. Most players played them out of the contention because of their fear of losing out and to be conservative for a major!

How many of them dared to whip their drivers more? None. If brooks could have more confidence in his driver and start whipping the ball down the green, it might be a history.

Also Rose missed so many fairways and greens but still ended in 3rd? His performance during a normal pga weekend would have dropped him outside of top10.

So the course was setup too easy but pros just played it as it was last year and the year before.

> Kind of nice to see someone sporting an old-school logo like Wilson - not too long ago EVERYBODY played Wilson (I've had a few sets in my day). Lately, it's TaylorMade, Callaway, Ping,...hopefully the triumph will be the candle lit under the Wilson company to return to its glory days with some outstanding irons and woods. Truth be told, every once in a while, I sneak in an old "Haig Ultra" Fluid Feel from what has to be 1968/1969, and it's still sweet!

When I started playing golf Wilson Staffs were THE irons. I still remember Ray Floyd’s caddy walking by me at Shinnecock in 1986. In the bag were a set of Wilson Staff irons, although he was not under contract with Wilson. But great as my nostalgia is for Wilson I don’t think the current management who brought us the Cortex driver designed by an amateur competing on a TV reality show is up to the job of leading the company back to glory.

Lol. No it’s hypocrisy. He says everyone plays the same course and conditions while undermining tough situations others experience until it affects him. Then he sulks and acts like a baby.

I think it's more enforcing the brand image than a political move. Back in the Eighties, I heard people say "The British Open" as much as, if not more than, "The Open". I certainly don't remember many people referring to it as "The Open Championship" in normal conversation. Anecdotal evidence, I know, but there you go.

Incidentally, I recall we did sometimes say "The US Masters", probably to distinguish it from other "Masters" tournaments (which presumably were borrowing their name from the ANGC's original). I notice that the British newspapers, though, now use "The Masters" to refer to the tournament (e.g. [https://theguardian.com/sport/live/2019/apr/14/the-masters-2019-final-round-live-golf-augusta-francesco-molinari-tiger-woods](https://www.theguardian.com/sport/live/2019/apr/14/the-masters-2019-final-round-live-golf-augusta-francesco-molinari-tiger-woods "https://theguardian.com/sport/live/2019/apr/14/the-masters-2019-final-round-live-golf-augusta-francesco-molinari-tiger-woods")). Maybe they always did formally, and "US Masters" was just informal use.

Ah yes.. the Jersey shore will show up and treat us all to their bro-ism's. Not enough hair gel in the world for that group.

At least DJ will have someone to conversate with on his own level.

So much hair gel and hair spray there will be a ban on smoking due to fire hazard.

Regardless of where you stand on the slow play issue this analysis, conducted at the US Open, is very interesting. Bryson DeChambeau!!
