My planemate feels like it puts me into a very shallow/flat backswing position at the top. My question is this an ideal swing plane

because to me it feels overly flat/shallow.

One of the things they stress is to fight the pull of the bands on the backswing and get the club very vertical. If you do what they ask, not sure how you could get too flat. But that might not be a good position either way, too flat or too vertical.

Have you watched the protocols? The planemate introduces resistance at the top for muscle memory when you release/shallow. You are not supposed to shallow at the top before the release.

You should be fighting against it at the top with the umbrella move they discuss in the protocols.

Wow, this thread is quite something. I’ve heard some people becoming too laid off with the Planemate. How can I avoid this? I just bought one.

Watch all of the protocols, especially the advanced ones before you actually start doing the drills, pay close attention to the umbrella move they discuss in the advanced protocols. You really need to fight the band to stand up the shaft in the backswing

I watched all of the protocols, which one are you referring to? I basically want the shaft to be more vertical in the backswing, right?

You literally can't be too flat or not have enough turn, if you are, you are not doing it correctly.

There is one in the advanced protocols where they talk about standing the shaft up like you are holding an umbrella, that is the one. But yes, the intent is get it vertical early in the backswing

I mean technically you can. I can fight the band and still be super flat and not have enough turn. I kept resistance on the band the whole way back and was still laid off.

Yeah you could. “Laid off” is all relative. If you turn enough and can clear and shallow the shaft the you are golden. Ex: Rickie Fowler. Super laid off at the top of his swing but can still shallow and fire through!

Agreed. He turns like a mofo! It is amazing he can be so consistent too! Butch is a great swing coach too. Too bad he ditched him but Rickie needs to mix it up or he risks becoming another Major-less talent.

The only issue I have encountered is that I do a fake turn on short punch spinners. The result is still pure, just probably not “proper”.

Enjoying mine so far and seems to help my piviot through the ball , I’ve always had a more handsy swing . One thing I’m having trouble with is the driver through swing . If you watch Martins video on driver follow through the band crosses his forearm at finish. Nine times out of ten with me the band slips under and gets twisted . Doesnt happen with irons. Anybody know the fault here so I can work on fixing . No matter what I’d do it seems to occur.

Is this when you are hitting a ball or when just doing air swings? The only thing I know is that the driver needs to be released a bit earlier.

Yes when hitting I’m trying to take the plane ate idea of keeping hands in front of bands . Seems to work with irons butt when trying to get the finish that Martin advocates low handle high clubbed the bands go over my hand rather than forearm . Even Martin says in the video he has a struggle with it sometimes. Just can’t seem to get it on forearms trying over and over.

Finally got some reps in on my planemate from my Jan 18th pre-order for the end of March ( was out of town when it finally got in so it sat for another week).

Made it up to protocol 5 so far. Hips are definitely a bit stiff as they haven't moved that much in a while. I knew I stalled my hips but the follow thru to finishing form in protocols 1 and 4 made me realize how much.

Need some more reps in on 5 as it needs a bit more practice to avoid getting sucked back by the band on the way to the the top.

So far it's helpful in both my swing and my sanity as I hit a month of the range being closed.

Also, I'm assuming this would be perfect for someone who tends to be shallow on the backswing and then steep on the downswing, correct?

FYI, I was on Amazon on Monday and stumbled upon Planemate for sale by Tourstriker for $155. It was listed as a used item. I ordered it and it was delivered on Thursday. It didn’t come in the white box but I will say, if it was used, it was pretty darn hard to tell!

Would you guys say this is a good trainer for someone new to the game (been playing less that 1 year). According to my friend who is a teaching pro elsewhere i left my arms and hands at impact away from my body.. Which means I don't keep my hands low and bear my body on the downswing.

 

Would this help with that? I am decent, i think, shooting between 95-102 generally. Playing 2x a week and I can practice pretty much 2-3 hours a day if I really want to.

Any thoughts?

The most helpful thing about it is going though the video 'protocols' while wearing it. It really makes you aware of the various aspects of the swing and where your arms, hands, and body are at each point. Without the videos I don't think it has a ton of value for the beginner or intermediate player (like me), but working through the lessons was great for me (shot 85-95 last season). it's tbd how it's helped me on course, but hopefully we'll find out soon!

I've been using the Planemate for the last couple of weeks, what I'm finding is that it seems to promote more of a lineal backswing versus making a turn & loading the right side

I find it hard to turn my hips on the downswing on the full swing since I have no torque on my right side ..on my downswing I'm finding my hands going down the line & coming over the top causing me to hit allot of slices

It's driving me crazy ...anyone have any suggestions to get feel that they promote of turning through the swing ?
